If you're being threatened, going public strikes me as being safer than hiding - because if something happens to you, who's going to get looked at first?

He was shuttled from hospital to hospital in Moscow for two days as doctors frantically tried to figure out what was wrong with him.
Sounds like they were awfully intent on keeping him alive.

Quote:

Vladimir Kara-Murza: I was at one point connected, I think to eight different artificial life support machines and doctors told my wife that there’s only gonna be about a five percent chance that I’ll survive.

But he beat the odds. When we spoke with him last year, he’d been recovering for a year, but he was still walking with a limp from nerve damage.

Lesley Stahl: So what happened?

Yes, what happened?

Here's a funny thing: I've known know two people PERSONALLY who died of organ failure after a sudden brief illness. One person, who worked for me, had just taken his son to Disneyland on Friday and was dead by Monday. Another person, my husband's surgeon, had attended a medical conference in Florida and by the time his flight landed in LAX he had collapsed and by the next day he was dead.

Coincidence? I think not! Clearly, someone is out to get me.

Quote:

Vladimir Kara-Murza: Well, it was some kind of a very strong toxin.
Although I don't have any proof, that's what I'm going with. Forget "septic shock"!

Quote:

We don’t know what it was because, you know, with these things, as people who know more about this than I do explained to me, you basically have to know exactly what you’re testing for in order to find it.

Lesley Stahl: So they never found the exact compound?

Vladimir Kara-Murza: They never did.

It wasn’t until the fourth day, and after he had been on a dialysis machine, that blood was drawn and sent to a toxicology lab in France. It found heavy metals in his blood

If I were to test YOUR blood, I'd find heavy metals in it. Everyone has some. The question is: how much? You don't "clear" heavy metals quickly, and if anyone had given this man a near-fatal dose, it would have been in his blood weeks later. The whole "heavy metals" mention is just stupid scare-mongering.

Quote:

but no specific toxin. Still Kara-Murza maintains that he was poisoned.

The article goes on to say that Kara-Murza fell ill again with the same symptoms as before. This time samples of his hair, blood and fingernails were sent to a lab in Israel for analysis for toxins. It's only been a month, it will surely take longer to get results. I'll be interested to see what they have to say.

This too is a recurring theme with you. It always starts out, I just happen to know. Yeah right....

You have a point Kiki. Though hiding did save Rushdie's life and his family's inspite of the fatwas against him.
The hiding came after the fatwas, not before. And Rushdie didn't expose his would-be killers, they pretty much did it to themselves, since the fatwas were international news. But given that he was already in hiding, having the threat against him being public was a useful circumstance.

Sudden Russian Death Syndrome

It’s not a great time to be an oligarch who’s unenthusiastic about Putin’s war in Ukraine.

By Elaine Godfrey

Here is a list of people you should not currently want to be: a Russian sausage tycoon, a Russian gas-industry executive, the editor in chief of a Russian tabloid, a Russian shipyard director, the head of a Russian ski resort, a Russian aviation official, or a Russian rail magnate. Anyone answering to such a description probably ought not stand near open windows, in almost any country, on almost every continent.

The meat millionaire and his also-deceased friend are the most recent additions to a macabre list of people who have succumbed to Sudden Russian Death Syndrome, a phenomenon that has claimed the lives of a flabbergastingly large number of businessmen, bureaucrats, oligarchs, and journalists. The catalog of these deaths—which includes alleged defenestrations, suspected poisonings, suspicious heart attacks, and supposed suicides—is remarkable for the variety of unnatural deaths contained within as well as its Russian-novel length.

(Here’s a list of Putin critics who've ended up dead
https://www.businessinsider.com/list-of-people-putin-is-suspected-of-a
ssassinating-2016-3
)

Some two dozen notable Russians have died in 2022 in mysterious ways, some gruesomely. The bodies of the gas-industry leaders Leonid Shulman and Alexander Tyulakov were found with suicide notes at the beginning of the year. Then, in the span of one month, three more Russian executives—Vasily Melnikov, Vladislav Avayev, and Sergey Protosenya—were found dead, in apparent murder-suicides, with their wives and children. In May, Russian authorities found the body of the Sochi resort owner Andrei Krukovsky at the bottom of a cliff; a week later, Aleksandr Subbotin, a manager of a Russian gas company, died in a home belonging to a Moscow shaman, after he was allegedly poisoned with toad venom.

The list goes on. In July, the energy executive Yuri Voronov was found floating in his suburban St. Petersburg swimming pool with a bullet wound in his head. Think Gatsby by the Neva. In August, the Latvia-born Putin critic Dan Rapoport apparently fell from the window of his Washington, D.C., apartment, a mile from the White House—right before Ravil Maganov, the chairman of a Russian oil company, fell six stories from a window in Moscow. Earlier this month, the IT-company director Grigory Kochenov toppled off a balcony. Ten days ago, in the French Riviera, a Russian real-estate tycoon took a fatal tumble down a flight of stairs.

To reiterate: All of these deaths occurred this year.

One could argue that, given Russia’s exceptionally low life expectancy and unchecked rate of alcoholism, at least some of these fatalities were natural or accidental. Just because you’re Russian doesn’t mean you can’t accidentally fall out of an upper-story window. Sometimes, people kill themselves—and the suicide rate among Russian men is one of the highest recorded in the world. For Edward Luttwak, a historian and military-strategy expert, that’s at least part of what’s happening: an outbreak of mass despair among Russia’s connected and privileged elite. “Imagine what happens to a globalized country when sanctions kick in,” he told me. “Some of them will commit suicide.” But the sheer proliferation of these untimely deaths warrants a closer look.

After all, this is what the Kremlin does. There is precedent for this phenomenon. In 2020, Russian agents poisoned—but failed to kill—the Putin critic Alexei Navalny with a nerve agent; a decade earlier, they succeeded in a similar attempt on the Russian-security-services defector Alexander Litvinenko. In 2004, when Viktor Yushchenko ran against a Kremlin-backed opponent for Ukraine’s presidency, he was poisoned with dioxin and left disfigured. Thirty years earlier, the Bulgarian secret service, reportedly with the help of the Soviet KGB, killed the dissident Georgi Markov by stabbing him on the Waterloo Bridge in London with a ricin-laced umbrella tip. Russian agents often “turn to the most exotic,” Luttwak told me. “People who do assassinations for commercial purposes look at [their methods] and laugh.”

Suicides are more difficult to decipher. For oligarchs who have failed to show sufficient loyalty to Putin, coaxed suicide is not an implausible scenario. “It is not uncommon to be told, ‘We can come to you or you can do the manly thing and commit suicide, take yourself off the chess board. At least you’ll have the agency of your own undoing,’” Michael Weiss, a journalist and the author of a forthcoming book on the GRU, the Russian military-intelligence agency, told me. Did Antov really fall out his window in India? Was he pushed by a Kremlin agent? Or did he get a call that threatened his family and made him feel he had no option but to leap? “All of these things are possible,” Weiss told me.

In the Kremlin’s Gothic murderverse, imagination is key.

“Things that mimic natural causes of death like a heart attack or a stroke, the Russians can be quite good at doing that,” Weiss said. The deaths range in their showiness, but they’re all part of the same overarching scheme: to perpetuate the idea that the Russian state is a deadly, all-powerful octopus, whose slimy tentacles can search out and seize any dissident, anywhere. As the Bond franchise had it, the world is not enough.

So, scrolling up thru some of the posts... in SECOND's post detailing deaths, there are a few things missing .

One of them is public criticism of Putin. What does it matter if these people- no matter how wealthy- grumble to themselves about the Kremlin? There doesn't appear to be any public motive for killing these men.

And while SOME influential figures might have had a direct bearing on the war effort- head of an energy company, for example- I can't think of anyone more sideways to that than the head of a ski resort. Or a sausage maker.

So,no motive AFAIK.

Another thing missing is their ages.

Another thing missing is how many men of similar wealth and age die in a normal year?

Now, maybe, as speculated, these men saw themselves cut off from their fortunes and escape hatches by western sanctions, and despaired. Maybe some of them were found embezzling or sending their money overseas, and faced long jail sentences. Or maybe they were watching their fortunes implode and drank themselves silly. Or maybe some just had heart attacks.

I guess without more facts it's impossible to say what's going on. Enquiring minds want to know!

As 2022 draws to a close, Putin has canceled a series of high-profile events.

A state of the nation address, originally scheduled for April, was repeatedly delayed and won't happen until next year. Putin's annual "direct line" — a media event in which Putin fields questions from ordinary Russians — was canceled outright.

An annual December "big press conference" – a semi-staged affair that allows the Russian leader to handle fawning questions from mostly pro-Kremlin media – was similarly tabled until 2023.

The Kremlin has given no reason for the delays. Many suspect it might be that, after 10 months of war and no sign of victory in sight, the Russian leader has run out of good news to share.

Don't you get tired of changing topics/ moving goalposts/ dragging red herrings across every thread SECOND?

First of all, altho some might thinks it's clever saying "next year" and "2023", making it sound so far-off, guess what? THAT'S TOMORROW!

Secondly, what are you implying? That Putin is scared of the public? That Putin is sick?

Hate to tell you, but Putin has been extremely busy lately, meeting with his military and security forces, visiting Surovikin in one of the recently annexed oblasts, meeting with Lukashenko to further tie the militaries together, and he has an upcoming meeting with Xi, and one with Erdogan and Assad. (I know there's more in there, I'm just not remembering them all.) It seems to me that he's planning something big. I don't know what, but I think he wants to wrap up Ukraine in 2023.

By all acounts, he's also planning on his succession, and it looks like the front runner is Medvedev, who was just selected as the deputy head of the military production committee (a permanent post, not ending with Ukraine) and who was also sent on a protocol-breaking direct meeting with Xi (head of state, who only meets with other heads of state.) And Medvedev is apparently more hawkish than Putin.

Putin's Presidency IS coming to an end. Some day, so will Putin. As will we all. But the west shouldn't be breathing a sigh of relief bc Russia's policy towards the west will probably change, but for the worse.

Anyway, thanks - in a sideways fashion- for bringing up yet another topic that you know nothing about.

Signym, you might not be aware, but in well-run countries, unlike Russia or North Korea, the Chief Executive does NOT pick his successor. Any plans Putin has for who his successor shall be are just plans for Russia to continue to be poorly governed.

Clearly, Russia is not doing much right when countries with smaller populations are doing as well as Russia, looking only at GDP. Would Russia consider doing differently? Such as not constructing so much of its self-worth on its stockpile of nukes? Or on the size of its Army? Or its victories against weak countries such as Ukraine?

But I expect whoever replaces Putin will talk constantly, just the same as Putin does, about Russia's nukes and the power to destroy the world, the size of the Russian Army, and military victories going all the way back to WWII.

GDP by Country

10 Canada $1,647 trillion

11 Russia $1,578 trillion

12 South Korea $1,531 trillion

Asks the guy who was just cheerleading the 1.7 Trillion dollar bill that is going to plunge us into a deeper recession while more than half of that money is going to feed the war machine.

Signym, you might not be aware, but in well-run countries, unlike Russia or North Korea, the Chief Executive does NOT pick his successor.

Perhaps you didn't know, but Russia has multi-party elections, and each party picks its candidates.

Medvedev will have to stand for election, like Putin did. But he will likely be the All Russia Party candidate.

The DNC picked brain-dead Biden as their candidate, and previously picked the inestimably corrupt and unpopular Hillary over Bernie. Do you call THAT well-run?

Living standards in Russia have gone up dramatically since 2000, which is why Putin is so popular. But riddle me this, Batman: If the USA is so doing so well, why have living standards of the typical American done nothing but fall for 30 years? Why has our industrial output fallen? What is this GDP you speak of, and who is it going to?

Countries should be compared to each other to make it obvious what they are strong at and what they are weak at.

Compare the USA to any other country for what Signym says the USA is doing wrong. There are many solutions that the USA should copy from those other countries. Let the copying begin!

Compare North and South Korea. One of those countries is strong in ICBMs and the other is strong in its economy. Maybe South Korea should be copying North Korea, or the other way around, depending on what kind of country you want.

The same kind of comparison could be done between Russia and Canada. Maybe Canada needs a few H-bombs, more ICBMs, and a belligerent foreign policy toward the USA. Maybe Canada needs a larger military presence along its Southern border to repel a sneak attack. Maybe Russia needs a smaller military presence along its Southern border. That might explain why the average Russian is poor compared to the average Canadian.

Why don't you just compare every country to Antarctica because that makes just about as much sense.

Meanwhile, with the printing press of the world at our disposal, the only Top 10 Lists that America is going to show up on is Obesity, Lack of Education and Homelessness.

You are making it perfectly clear that you don't get around very much inside America. Have you ever visited another country for more than a few days?

Millions of Americans are functioning better than every Russian except for the smartest and richest few thousand in Russia. More than 2.1 million US homes are valued between $1 million and $2 million. Nearly 600,000 homes are valued at $2 million or more! And it is completely unsurprising that the high-functioning Americans living in those million-dollar-plus homes are NOT inviting the homeless to live in their guest bedrooms. That is because in America it is your Constitutional right as a freedom-loving American to be as fat as you want to be and as dumb as you please and almost nobody will dare to force you to stop being a drunk. In other countries, they will NOT leave you out in the snow to freeze to death for being fat, drunk, and stupid, but those countries are NOT America. Fat, drunk and stupid Americans are a problem that could be fixed, but other, high-functioning Americans would have to change their beliefs first to at least match less harsh countries.

You remind me that the USA is at least two different countries. The parts of Texas controlled by Republicans have poorly functioning economies (same as Russia) based on forestry and oil/gas drilling and military bases and building H-bombs (Pantex, in the Texas Panhandle, builds H-bombs). Those parts have been left far behind, in wealth, by the parts controlled by Democrats.

Putin's top defence official dies after 160ft balcony fall in latest mystery death

Another top Putin ally has been found dead after mysteriously falling 160ft from a building.

Marina Yankina was discovered by a passer-by at the entrance to the tower in St Petersburg.

While some of her belongings were found in the 16-storey building, it is believed she did not live there and it was her husband’s apartment.

The 58-year-old was a key figure in boosting funding efforts for Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Although her death is a suspected suicide, this is often stated by Russian authorities before investigations are carried out.
