Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

When Trump sanctions CA trade with anybody like he did with Venezuela, then the state will be in deep trouble. Until then, it's not about to be anywhere close.

Huh? What does Trump have to do with any thing per this topic? CA is doing all this on their own. Have been for quite some time. Try not to deflect & look at what is going on today. Like power outages scheduled to last for days... taking place as we speak.

LOL @ trying to pin Venezuela’s decades old problem on Trump. Good grief.

Venezuela had // one, 1, uno, un, ein // product to sell on the global market, which was oil. But the US embargoed Venezuelan oil, and confiscated its assets located outside of the country (as did other countries, like BoE confiscating Venezuela's gold), and ran cyber-ops to cripple the power grid (till Russian troops put a stop to it). Those are pretty serious economic acts of war.

Fortunately California hasn't been targeted like that.

I think one of California's biggest reasons for homelessness is the climate.

WAY back when, I used to set up sound reinforcement equipment for summer outdoor concerts in the NE. (Yep, that was me, wheeling big speakers around, setting up mike stands, and laying cable.) Anyway, the bums, as we called, them would always hang around the concerts because it was something to do. But when winter came many of them would ride the rails to California, because otherwise they'd, yanno, freeze to death. (Or they'd get ripping drunk and check themselves into the County Hospital detox unit for three hots and a cot. And some I think would find a way into the county jail for the same reason.) So, lots of homeless people come to California for the weather to - let me repeat this - avoid freezing to death. It was and is an actual plan.

California also has a REALLY large illegal immigrant population - the kind that employers like to exploit with off-the-books 'employment' featuring too much work, really low wages, and no benefits, and / or 'independent contractor' and 'gig' work.

In addition, California has REALLY expensive housing - it's those fantastic market forces at work! because nobody builds low-cost or even middle-cost housing (there's no money in it), and housing bubbles amp up prices beyond reach.

All in all, there are a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with California's policies on anything that draw a lot of the homeless, illegal immigrants, unemployed, and marginally employed to the area; or that create homelessness. And it's an option, because if worse comes to worse, you won't freeze to death if you live under an overpass or along the riverbeds or in your car.

That said, California also has some serious pandering to illegal immigrants.

Like the rest of the country California has a really big infrastructure problem. I mean, haven't you noticed all the buildings in the east getting blown up by gas explosions?

30% of homeless people come from out of state. The entire west coast, with its mild climate, has that problem.

One of the solutions that I proposed in the thread about homelessness is to send these people back to their nearest relatives after a stint of involuntary treatment, because if you combine a mild climate with benefits you create a powerful magnet for the homeless from across the nation.

And yep ... CA's do-gooder policies also encourage illegal aliens to roost here. NOT a smart idea!

So some of CA's problems are self-inflicted, but many of CA's problems are from forces beyond its control; The Fed;s low-low interest rate policy creating a real estate bubble? The desire of private companies not to invest in their own infrastrcture? Those are national problems, not just in CA.

The obvious point here is that California is over regulating, overtaxing mismanaging, while micromanaging itself into oblivion .

And it doesn’t have to be that way. People have a choice, and should exercise their right to choose better.

How is it obvious?

And yeah, people DO have a choice, which is why many of the nation's homeless come to - California! How is that a product of CA's over-regulation?

How is PG&E's bankruptcy - caused by its own failure to meet its own stated standard of maintenance - a problem of CA's over-regulation?

Watch the video. Watch any video on the decimated quality of life for those in CA's major cities. CA's hyper green bureaucracy is the cause for much of the wildfires and their exponentially fast rates of growth and coverage in short periods of time.

It's not even up for debate, so if you want to keen denying what's been established, be my guest. You're just tossing stones at the moon for all the good it does.

Betting dollars to donuts it won't, because the Dems have zero excuses nor can theyu blame anyone else because Dems fully control that state. It's their making, their mess and their ONLY hope is to get Kamala or some sympathetic D in the WH to bail them out w/ a massive federal bail out.

Nope - you give yourself and your empty threats way too much credit. You're definitely a troll. Russian? How would I know? I go with Geezer's "Why do you bother with them, they're old Soviets." You took a political stance decades ago and you're stuck on it because if you don't, you'll have to admit to yourself that you wasted 20+ years of your life, maybe more.

With DNC coming to Milwaukee next summer, they're ginning up the meth trade so the Dems feel at home.

Trust me, I know about the horrible quality of life in CAs major cities.

My biggest gripe is the trafic. My second biggest gripe is crime. My third biggest gripe is the illegal aliens, and my fourth biggest gripe is the homeless people everywhere. Housing prices are a giant gripe for a lot of people. It's an overgrown, over-developed sprawling mess which needs to stop growing.

AFA the wildfires are concerned ... there is plenty of blame to go around. The PROXIMATE (ie immediate) cause of the most recent devastating wildfires is PG&E's failure to trim trees under powerlines, and failure to replace aging towers and lines. Strong winds and hot temps caused the lines to droop and swing into untrimmed trees, which provided (literally) the sparks that set off multiple fires in multiple locations. REGULATIONS WERE IGNORED. PG&E was also responsible for the gas explosion that took out part of San Bruno.

Then, there was the 80 mph wind. In those winds, there is no such thing as "too big to burn". ACT OF GOD. The people of Fort McMurray in Canada know all about that!

Then on top of that, the more rural towns which experienced huge growth booms failed to put in properly-size evacuation routes, as required by law. So they were trying to evacuate a city of 100,000 on routes that could accommodate only 25,000. REGULATION IGNORED.

Then there was forest mismanagement. People LIKE dense forests, it looks more scenic, but the forests should have been thinned to about 60 trees per acre. BAD POLICY. (altho, with 80 mph winds its like fanning a fireplace with a bellows ... not sure that ANY thinning would have done any good!)

Kind of a clusterfuck all the way around, wouldn't you say?

Nah, that'll just make a bigger mess.

For all that people claim to hate CA, I see an awful lot of license plates from everywhere else ... here. Just driving to Lowe's we saw Wyoming, Mississippi, and Indianna. The place just keeps on growing, it's kinda like the borg.
