Quote: The fire began on the morning of Thursday, November 8, 2018, when part of a poorly maintained Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) transmission line in the Feather River Canyon failed during strong katabatic winds. [At times in excess of 80 mph. "A katabatic wind is a downslope wind caused by the flow of an elevated, high-density air mass into a lower-density air mass below under the force of gravity."] Those winds rapidly drove the Camp Fire through the communities of Concow, Magalia, Butte Creek Canyon, and Paradise, largely destroying them. The fire burned for another two weeks, and was contained on Sunday, November 25, after burning 153,336 acres (62,050 ha). The Camp Fire caused 85 fatalities, displaced more than 50,000 people, and destroyed more than 18,000 structures, causing an estimated US$16.5 billion in damage. It was the most expensive natural disaster (by insured losses) of 2018, and is a notable case of a utility-caused wildfire. PG&E filed for bankruptcy in January 2019, citing expected wildfire liabilities of $30 billion.

Quote:Originally posted by SIGNYM: There are many, many things you can pin on Newsom and Bass, and gross, fucking incompetence and mismanagement are right at the top. But AFA the houses being burned and brush clearance ... they are on PRIVATE PROPERTY. IDK if there's any way to compel property owners to make their property fire-resistant, even if a specific homeowner's property becomes the locus of a fire outbreak, unless special codes are written for urban-wildland interface, and strictly enforced.
Quote:One thing to notice on LA maps, wherever the streets are curvy, thats where the hills are. And that's where the fires are. Also, its the utulities responsible for clearing brush and trees away from power lines, not the homeowner. IDK if you recall, but there was a huge fire in northern CA in 2018 that wiped an entire town off the map. The Camps Fire. Look it up.

Quote: Mr. Chaudry believes the fire didn't start in his backyard. Here's a look at Chaudry's backyard. And here's the context. Chaudry lives along a canyon filled with trees.

Quote: Energy company Edison International was sued on Monday for its alleged role in igniting at least one of the wildfires in Los Angeles County. Bloomberg reports, "The lawsuit is on behalf of a group of homeowners, renters, business owners and others with properties destroyed by the Eaton Fire in the Pasadena area," adding, "The suit alleges a Southern California Edison pole holding power lines was the cause of the blaze that leveled the town of Altadena." . . . Meanwhile, it's only a matter of time before lawsuits are filed against the City of Los Angeles or even the State of California for gross negligence. These lawsuits will likely cite * improper forest management, * cuts to fire budgets, and the * mishandling of the Palisades Reservoir, given that city officials knew very well about dry conditions and wind storms ahead of the first full week of the new year.

Quote:Originally posted by SIGNYM: Gavin Newsom, smiling and wiggle dancing while talking about the fires? That's just creepy. ***** CA has a LONG history of fires and it's not bc of "Democrats". POOR/NO FOREST MANAGEMENT And it's not California that's the problem! Of the 33 million acres of forested land, approx 57% of CA forested land is under FEDERAL management. Another 24% are non-corporate privately owned, and 90%+ of those are under 500 acres. (Probably people who own homes or lots up in the mountains). About 16% is owned by corporations or various business or financial interests (logging, REITS, etc) ONLY 3% IS OWNED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. Federal forest (mis)management lurched from Smokey the Bear "stop every forest fire", which allowed an unnatural accumulation of fuel, to "let it burn" (1972-1988) to -currently- fire prevention but only where it impacts homes, businesses, and infrastructure. And they're doing a piss-poor job of even that. IF OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WAS TRULY INTERESTED IN CLIMATE CHANGE, THEY WOULD IMMEDIATELY START RAMPING UP FUNDING FOR WILDLAND MANAGEMENT. IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST 10X WHAT IT IS NOW. POOR LAND USE PLANNING. People just LOVE to nestle their homes among the trees. BUT SERIOUSLY, FOLKS ... IN NARROW BRUSH AND TREE COVERED CANYONS IN SO CAL?? 'Nuff said.
