Yeah... I don't like that spoofing ability. It's been around for a long time. I found out about it well over a decade ago when I did some work for an agency that used the service to make people think you were calling from a local spot.

Sure... you had to pay the outfit to use the spoofing service, but that's not a very high barrier to entry to do this.

Granted, if you're doing something illegal with that, I'm sure there's plenty of paper trail and you're going to get caught, but I don't think that anybody should be able to spoof local numbers, even for the relatively innocuous and legal reason I was being paid to do it. It just shouldn't be a thing that's even allowed legally, IMO.

I don't get a whole lot of robocalls compared to other people I know, but the few that I've gotten from what was OBVIOUSLY an Indian scam call center used a local number, which is the only reason I even picked up the phone in the first place.

Man In Mercedes Speeds Through A Mass Of Punks Blocking The Road On Their Bikes, Driver Gets Beaten And Car Destroyed Once The Bikers Find Him In Lost Angeles

The narrative is the driver was reckless but in truth, these mass bike rides are nothing but a bunch of punks who block entire streets and get aggressive with drivers who honk their horns. Drivers have no choice, either sit behind and travel at 10 miles per hour or try and get through and possibly meet violence in the process.

Just reason #429 to GTFO of Los Angeles.

There are many, many things you can pin on Newsom and Bass, and gross, fucking incompetence and mismanagement are right at the top.

But AFA the houses being burned and brush clearance ... they are on PRIVATE PROPERTY. IDK if there's any way to compel property owners to make their property fire-resistant, even if a specific homeowner's property becomes the locus of a fire outbreak, unless special codes are written for urban-wildland interface, and strictly enforced.

One thing to notice on LA maps, wherever the streets are curvy, thats where the hills are. And that's where the fires are.

Also, its the utulities responsible for clearing brush and trees away from power lines, not the homeowner.

IDK if you recall, but there was a huge fire in northern CA in 2018 that wiped an entire town off the map. The Camps Fire. Look it up.

Camp Fire destroys the town of Paradise

Quote:

The fire began on the morning of Thursday, November 8, 2018, when part of a poorly maintained Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) transmission line in the Feather River Canyon failed during strong katabatic winds. [At times in excess of 80 mph. "A katabatic wind is a downslope wind caused by the flow of an elevated, high-density air mass into a lower-density air mass below under the force of gravity."] Those winds rapidly drove the Camp Fire through the communities of Concow, Magalia, Butte Creek Canyon, and Paradise, largely destroying them. The fire burned for another two weeks, and was contained on Sunday, November 25, after burning 153,336 acres (62,050 ha). The Camp Fire caused 85 fatalities, displaced more than 50,000 people, and destroyed more than 18,000 structures, causing an estimated US$16.5 billion in damage. It was the most expensive natural disaster (by insured losses) of 2018, and is a notable case of a utility-caused wildfire.

PG&E filed for bankruptcy in January 2019, citing expected wildfire liabilities of $30 billion.

There were so many things that went wrong:

No maintenance on powerlines by PG&E (Extensive record of poor maintenance on gas lines and powerlines. San Bruno gas main explosion. ) SCE supposedly now shuts off electricity in line affected by strong winds.

Only one narrow road in and out of communities.

No brush clearing and tree thinning on private land, no "fire safety zone" around community.

Perfect storm of very strong, dry wind and dry vegetation.

.....

But with 80 mph winds driving embers over a mile away, no amount of brush clearing would have helped. Even houses in the middle of Paradise were destroyed, leading to the lesson "There's no such thing as 'too big to burn' ".

The only thing to make a difference would have been prevention, and multiple exit routes.

That's ridiculous to even suggest. You people are already subject to the most insane property taxes in the country, and there's not even a distant 2nd place.

As long as you're not in a HOA which would have their own rules, you're fine if your yard doesn't look like Sandord and Son's.

Do not blame the homeowners here. There is absolutely nothing that any of these people could have done to prevent this destruction.

This was 100% the fault of the inept Californian Government.

That was intentional. These are the people who have all the money in the world but go around telling everyone else how to live their lives while they get to live their own out inside their gated community bubble with their own private security forces that get to focus on only one easily accessible entryway with no point of egress unless you've got a 12 foot ladder laying by the wall or remembered to bring your grappling hook with you when you went out for your daily jog.

The people who, up until now, have NEVER HAD TO PAY THE PRICE for the bad people and the bad policies they keep voting in because the empty sloganeering from the Left makes them feel nice.

I bet they regret walling themselves away inside their own Panic Room Communities now. For at least 16 of them and counting, they sealed themselves inside their own mausoleum.

NGL... My schadenfreude boner is raging.

Good luck on the streets. Hope you remembered to pay your yearly $20,000 Fire Insurance bill on time. Assuming you were lucky enough to even find somebody who would still insure your house anywhere near L.A. in 2024, that is.

Well then, you don't know what you're posting about.

I can point to a failures that I've been bitching about for decades: ridiculous forest (mis)management.

And apparently, lack of locally available water for firefighting.

But with 80 mph winds it's hard to do much of anything in terms of firefighting. Prevention and mitigation, maybe.

I looked for Malibu fire with google, which reminded me that Malibu has burnt down many times before:

Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt, among others, wondered aloud just why we insured such areas. "If these Malibu residences that are periodically destroyed were in a 20-year floodplain, they would never have been rebuilt or reinsured," he opined in 1999.

There are only two wise choices: build houses that don't burn or do not rebuild in areas that burn an average of two times every ten years. But there is the third choice for people who forget the past: depend on being lucky, do not pay the higher price for fireproof construction, and rebuild flammable houses (which are cheaper to build) in an area that will burn again.

Energy company Edison International was sued on Monday for its alleged role in igniting at least one of the wildfires in Los Angeles County.

Bloomberg reports, "The lawsuit is on behalf of a group of homeowners, renters, business owners and others with properties destroyed by the Eaton Fire in the Pasadena area," adding, "The suit alleges a Southern California Edison pole holding power lines was the cause of the blaze that leveled the town of Altadena."

. . .

Meanwhile, it's only a matter of time before lawsuits are filed against the City of Los Angeles or even the State of California for gross negligence. These lawsuits will likely cite

* improper forest management,

* cuts to fire budgets, and the

* mishandling of the Palisades Reservoir,

given that city officials knew very well about dry conditions and wind storms ahead of the first full week of the new year.

It's still very dry here and there is no rain in the 10-day forecast. We haven't had rain in about 10 months. And the air is very dry, with a dew point less than 20F. There's a Santa Ana reprieve expected Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but back to Santa Anas after that.

Normally, by now we'd have had at least a couple of rainstorms. So, back to watering the property and humidifying the house.

CA has a LONG history of fires and it's not bc of "Democrats".

POOR/NO FOREST MANAGEMENT
And it's not California that's the problem!

Of the 33 million acres of forested land, approx 57% of CA forested land is under FEDERAL management.
Another 24% are non-corporate privately owned, and 90%+ of those are under 500 acres. (Probably people who own homes or lots up in the mountains).

About 16% is owned by corporations or various business or financial interests (logging, REITS, etc)

ONLY 3% IS OWNED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.

Federal forest (mis)management lurched from Smokey the Bear "stop every forest fire", which allowed an unnatural accumulation of fuel, to "let it burn" (1972-1988) to -currently- fire prevention but only where it impacts homes, businesses, and infrastructure. And they're doing a piss-poor job of even that.

IF OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WAS TRULY INTERESTED IN CLIMATE CHANGE, THEY WOULD IMMEDIATELY START RAMPING UP FUNDING FOR WILDLAND MANAGEMENT. IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST 10X WHAT IT IS NOW.

POOR LAND USE PLANNING.

People just LOVE to nestle their homes among the trees. BUT SERIOUSLY, FOLKS ... IN NARROW BRUSH AND TREE COVERED CANYONS IN SO CAL??

'Nuff said.

Video: This couple's fire-resistant home survived the LA wildfires

Amid the ruin of charred homes and blackened hillsides left devastated by the Palisades Fire, stands a home that held out against the flames and smoke that blanketed northwest LA last week.

Architect Michael Kovac prioritized sustainability and wildfire resilience when he designed the home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. He has lived there with his wife, Dr. Karina Maher, since 2010.

There's no way we're going to stop people from rebuilding in fire-prone areas, but there's something we can do: insist that new homes be hardened against fire.

Here's the thing: In fires like the ones in LA, most of the damage is caused by showers of burning embers that are blown into neighborhoods by strong winds and then spread from there. These embers can travel a mile or more, so clearing brush at the wildland-urban interface won't do much when winds are as heavy as they were last week. The only thing that works is hardening every house within a mile or two. This includes things like fire-retardant roofs and siding, automatic sprinkler systems, cleared zones around property lines, and so forth. And it has to be done universally for it to be effective.

So yes to streamlining rebuilding permits, but with one exception: every house has to be rebuilt to fire-hardening standards. This costs money and won't be popular, and for that reason it probably won't get done. But it's the only real answer. If we ignore it, this will happen all over again no matter how many airplanes we buy or how big our reservoirs are.

The LA Times ran a good piece about this a few days ago based on interviews with Jack Cohen and Stephen Pyne, a pair of experts on urban fires. Here's an excerpt:

“The assumption is continually made that it’s the big flames” that cause widespread community destruction, [Cohen] said, “and yet the wildfire actually only initiates community ignitions largely with lofted burning embers.”

Experts attribute widespread devastation to wind-driven embers igniting spot fires two to three miles ahead of the established fire. Maps of the Eaton fire show seemingly random ignitions across Altadena.

“When you study the destruction in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, note what didn’t burn — unconsumed tree canopies adjacent to totally destroyed homes,” he said. “The sequence of destruction is commonly assumed to occur in some kind of organized spreading flame front — a tsunami of super-heated gases — but it doesn’t happen that way.”

“In high-density development, scattered burning homes spread to their neighbors and so on. Ignitions downwind and across streets are typically from showers of burning embers from burning structures.”

....The 1991 Tunnel fire in the Oakland and Berkeley Hills marked the start of the modern era of urban fires, destroying 2,843 homes. More recently, fires devastated Gatlinburg, Tenn., in 2016, the towns of Superior and Louisville in Colorado in 2021 and Lahaina, Hawaii, two years ago.

“It’s not just a California quirk,” Pyne said. “California, I think, gets there first in exaggerated forms, but this is a national issue. And, in fact, it’s becoming an international issue.”

....“We don’t necessarily need a trillion-dollar program and a fire czar to get control of the fire problem,” Pyne said. “What we need are a thousand things that tweak the environment in favorable ways such that we can prevent these eruptions.” For example, municipal and fire prevention agencies must give property owners advance — and continual — warnings to clear dead vegetation and to wet dry brush within 10 feet of the house with periodic, prolonged sprinklings.

What a dumb ass.

Nothing was going to save those homes.

And I'm sure Kevin is more than happy to see the prices of new homes go up another 35% after being forced through all the new regulations California makes because none of them can do their job or ever take the blame for their repeated failures.

Shut the fuck up Kevin.

Fire hardened homes survive firestorms, just like earthquake-resistant buildings survive moderate quakes, and hurricane resistant homes survive hurricanes, and well-insulated homes are more comfortable in blizzards.

It's not rocket science.

There are a couple of options.

The first is to let people build whatever the hell they want, without the expectation of being saved by first responders, or insurance. Bc if the emergency is widespread enough ... firestorm, hurricane, earthquake, flood, blizzard... well, face it, honey. YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN.

The second is to have a "nanny state" take responsibility for you, tell you what you can and can't do, but have protection, or at least rescue, from disaster.
