Funny. The only people complaining about it are the News agencies and Leftist retards who didn't even notice the prices were high until last week.

All of us who voted for Trump are feeling good so far.

Oh Boo Hoo, you little fucking pussies.

I missed the part where Trump voters got together and collectively had cry sessions with each other every single day in 2021.

You ARE helpless. You are helpless by nature. You are weak. You are pathetic. Most of you would be completely unfit to take care of yourselves if you went more than 2 months without a steady paycheck.

You had the power of the Media behind you for the last 12 years. This is no longer the case.

You are alone and in the cold.

The world you thought you were living in 6 months ago no longer exists.

And you will be laid off and your propaganda outfit will shutter its doors soon.

Lincoln warned the Trumptards what would happen

By Heather Cox Richardson | Jan 26, 2025

https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/january-26-2025

On January 27, 1838, Abraham Lincoln rose before the Young Men’s Lyceum in Springfield, Illinois, to make a speech. Just 28 years old, Lincoln had begun to practice law and had political ambitions. But he was worried that his generation might not preserve the republic that the founders had handed to it for transmission to yet another generation. He took as his topic for that January evening, “The Perpetuation of Our Political Institutions.”

Lincoln saw trouble coming, but not from a foreign power, as other countries feared. The destruction of the United States, he warned, could come only from within. “If destruction be our lot,” he said, “we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”

The trouble Lincoln perceived stemmed from the growing lawlessness in the country as men ignored the rule of law and acted on their passions, imposing their will on their neighbors through violence. He pointed specifically to two recent events: the 1836 lynching of free Black man Francis McIntosh in St. Louis, Missouri, and the 1837 murder of white abolitionist editor Elijah P. Lovejoy by a proslavery mob in Alton, Illinois.

But the problem of lawlessness was not limited to individual instances, he said. A public practice of ignoring the law eventually broke down all the guardrails designed to protect individuals, while lawbreakers, going unpunished, became convinced they were entitled to act without restraint. “Having ever regarded Government as their deadliest bane,” Lincoln said, “they make a jubilee of the suspension of its operations; and pray for nothing so much as its total annihilation.”

The only way to guard against such destruction, Lincoln said, was to protect the rule of law on which the country was founded. “As the patriots of seventy-six did to the support of the Declaration of Independence, so to the support of the Constitution and Laws, let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor…. Let reverence for the laws…become the political religion of the nation; and let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars.”

Lincoln was quick to clarify that he was not saying all laws were good. Indeed, he said, bad laws should be challenged and repealed. But the underlying structure of the rule of law, based in the Constitution, could not be abandoned without losing democracy.

Lincoln didn’t stop there. He warned that the very success of the American republic threatened its continuation. “[M]en of ambition and talents” could no longer make their name by building the nation—that glory had already been won. Their ambition could not be served simply by preserving what those before them had created, so they would achieve distinction through destruction.

For such a man, Lincoln said, “Distinction will be his paramount object, and although he would as willingly, perhaps more so, acquire it by doing good as harm; yet, that opportunity being past, and nothing left to be done in the way of building up, he would set boldly to the task of pulling down.” With no dangerous foreign power to turn people’s passions against, people would turn from the project of “establishing and maintaining civil and religious liberty” and would instead turn against each other.

Lincoln reminded his audience that the torch of American democracy had been passed to them. The Founders had used their passions to create a system of laws, but the time for passion had passed, lest it tear the nation apart. The next generation must support democracy through “sober reason,” he said. He called for Americans to exercise “general intelligence, sound morality, and in particular, a reverence for the constitution and laws.”

“Upon these let the proud fabric of freedom rest, as the rock of its basis; and as truly as has been said of the only greater institution, ‘the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’”

What became known as the Lyceum Address is one of the earliest speeches of Lincoln’s to have been preserved, and at the time it established him as a rising politician and political thinker. But his recognition, in a time of religious fervor and moral crusades, that the law must prevail over individual passions reverberates far beyond the specific crises of the 1830s.

We Democrats are doing fine but the angry poor white trash Trump voters around me in Texas are continuing to stumble toward an early death, furious at Democrats who, according to my local Trumptards, are stealing wealth away from the oh-so-long-suffering Trumptards who, one of these days, are going to rise up and take the wealth back. Not gonna happen because Trumptards are too cowardly to actually take anything from a guy with a shotgun and happy to shoot them in the face in order to give them a reality lesson.

Trump's initial net approval rating of +7 percentage points is lower than that of any newly elected president since World War II, with one exception: Trump himself during his first term. Trump and his voters are complete assholes.

The one big question looming over Trump’s power grabs

No one knows if the Supreme Court will enforce the law against Trump.

By Ian Millhiser | Jan 28, 2025, 1:30 PM CST

https://www.vox.com/scotus/397104/supreme-court-donald-trump-lawlessne
ss

Much of what Donald Trump has done in his first eight days back in the White House is legally unjustifiable. What’s uncertain is whether the Supreme Court will do anything to stop him.

In two particularly egregious cases, Trump ordered an end to birthright citizenship for many Americans, and ordered the federal government to pause spending on a wide range of federal grants and loans already approved by Congress. While the order announcing the pause is confusing, early reporting suggests that tens of billions of dollars could be cut off (although the White House argued the order is more limited than it appears).

In both cases, the law is clear. The Reagan-appointed federal judge who blocked Trump’s birthright citizenship order said that in his 40 years on the bench he “can’t remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one is.” (Birthright citizenship is a right enshrined in the Constitution.)

Similarly, the Department of Justice has long warned that there is no argument to justify a president’s decision not to spend money appropriated by Congress. As future Chief Justice William Rehnquist wrote in a 1969 DOJ memo, “it is in our view extremely difficult to formulate a constitutional theory to justify a refusal by the President to comply with a congressional directive to spend.”

Assuming that Trump actually wants these orders to take effect — and it’s possible that they are nothing more than political stunts — he appears to be making a risky bet. The premise of many of Trump’s executive actions appears to be that the Supreme Court will let him get away with things that aren’t just illegal, but that, until recently, weren’t even considered debatable.

Sadly, the outcome of this bet is uncertain. A year ago, the idea that presidents are allowed to use their official powers to commit crimes was also considered laughable. Among other things, why would then-President Gerald Ford have pardoned former President Richard Nixon in 1974, for crimes Nixon allegedly committed using the power of the presidency, if Nixon were already immune from prosecution?

And yet, the Supreme Court’s Republican majority did not simply give Trump immunity from many of the crimes he allegedly committed during his first term, they went out of their way to specify that Trump can order the DOJ to target his enemies and nothing can be done to him.

The Republican Court’s hands-off approach to Trump contrasts sharply with the extraordinary oversight it applied to Democratic President Joe Biden. During the Biden administration, the Republican justices fabricated entire legal doctrines — such as its so-called major questions doctrine — which allowed it to strike down policies that were explicitly authorized by federal law.

The Supreme Court, in other words, functions less and less like a court of law, and more and more like another arena for partisan politics. Both parties choose justices based largely on whether those appointees are likely to toe a partisan line on a long list of legal questions. And all nine justices have behaved more or less as you’d expect someone chosen through such a partisan process to behave.

All of that said, the Court does sometimes balk at the most outlandish right-wing legal arguments that land on its doorstep. The Supreme Court routinely reverses the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, for example, which has become a breeding ground for far-right legal theories that would do lasting harm to the Republic if they were ever taken seriously. Last term, a 7-2 Supreme Court rejected a Fifth Circuit decision that could have seized up the entire US mortgage industry and caused an economic depression in the process.

So, if you’re asking whether this Court will block any of Trump’s illegal actions, the only honest answer that any lawyer can give is “I don’t know.” The current panel of justices are more partisan than any of their predecessors. But they do sometimes reject legal arguments supported by the rightmost fringe of the Republican Party.

6ix, you keep repeatedly cutting and pasting the same words to convince yourself that Trump annihilated the past. But the past hasn't changed. Christianity will not change directions to align with Trump's Presidential orders:

MAGA Has a Catholic Problem

By Christopher Hale | Jan 28, 2025 at 3:47 PM EST

The Catholic Church's stance on immigrants is as old as the Gospel of Luke itself, which describes how Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt to protect the infant Jesus from King Herod's murderous decree.

The words "there is no room at the inn," of which Catholics are reminded every Christmas, seem apt to describe our country's new Herodian regime.

Pope Francis—who Catholics like Vice President JD Vance honor as the vicar of Jesus Christ—has highlighted the plight of migrants as a tragedy of our time, urging global solidarity and humane treatment of those fleeing violence and poverty.

Meanwhile, the MAGA movement's rhetoric and policies demonize immigrants, equating them with crime and economic instability. The administration's decision to target sacred spaces for immigration enforcement exemplifies this stark contrast with Catholic values.

While the MAGA movement claims to champion religious liberty, it increasingly conflates faith with partisanship and undermines the moral authority of religious leaders who challenge its agenda. By accusing the bishops of prioritizing financial interests over spiritual principles, Vance's remarks signaled a troubling willingness to dismiss the Church's moral teachings when they conflict with MAGA priorities.

The tension between Trump's White House and the Catholic Church is not limited to immigration policy. Vance's combative tone was emblematic of the broader MAGA cultural agenda, which prioritizes division over unity and power over mercy.

Catholic teaching calls for dialogue, humility, and the pursuit of the common good. The Gospel's beatitudes—blessed are the meek, the merciful, and the peacemakers—stand in stark opposition to the movement's rhetoric of anger and grievance.

The MAGA movement's economic priorities, which favor tax cuts for the wealthy and deregulation, conflict with Catholic social teaching's emphasis on economic justice and the dignity of labor.

Similarly, MAGA's embrace of nationalism—encapsulated in the "America First" mantra—contradicts the Church's vision of a global human family united in solidarity and mutual care.

All told, MAGA has a Catholic problem because its vision is rooted in power, exclusion, and grievance, clashing with the Gospel's call to love, inclusion, and humility. The Catholic Church challenges its faithful to transcend partisan allegiances and live out a radical, sacrificial faith.

Although many Catholics will continue to align with conservative positions on issues like abortion, these deep moral and ideological tensions between Catholic teaching and MAGA policies are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

As long as the MAGA movement prioritizes division over unity and self-interest over the common good, it will struggle to authentically engage with the heart of Catholicism across the nation.

The future of the Catholic Church's relationship with the Republican Party remains uncertain. But if the first week of this administration is any sign, my fellow Catholic JD Vance will choose the ego of Donald Trump over the gospel of Jesus Christ.

My prayer is this will change, and that the words of angel Gabriel will be proven right: "Nothing is impossible with God."

Crashing the economy: Inside Trump's blueprint

By Thom Hartmann | January 28, 2025

https://www.alternet.org/alternet-exclusives/trump-grifting/

Trump’s threats to increase our national debt by as much as $7 trillion (with new tax cuts for billionaires) and impose tariffs on imported goods will risk creating a financial crisis and maybe even a Great Depression.

To the average person, the idea of a recession or even a crash like we saw under Bush in 2008, Reagan in 1981/82, or Hoover in 1929 seems grim. So why is Trump so willing to risk an economic crash on his watch with these risky policies?

To understand why a billionaire like Trump — and the billionaires who put and keep him in office — might be not just willing but enthusiastic about creating an economic crisis, you first must view it from a rightwing billionaires’ point of view.

March 16, 2020 — just after Trump declared a pandemic and lockdown — the Dow sustained the largest single-day crash in its entire history. For the investor class, Trump, and his billionaire buddies, this was an even better stock purchasing opportunity than the Bush crash of 2007.

Fewer than three months later, on June 4th, we learned that the seven richest people in America had seen their fortunes increase by fully 50 percent.

And with Trump’s massive tax cut for his fellow billionaires, they could keep most all of it: by that time the average American billionaire was paying less than 4 percent in income taxes (a situation that persists to this day).

Just during that one single terrible “crash” year of 2020, the Institute for Policy Studies documents, the world’s 2,365 billionaires saw their wealth increase by a full 54%, as U.S. billionaires saw their net worth surge 62 percent by $1.8 trillion. Average billionaire wealth worldwide increased 27% in that one year alone.

And now it begins anew: Republicans are meeting at Trump’s Doral golf resort in Miami today to plan strategy. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5105756-house-republican-retreat-tr
ump-agenda
/

Don’t expect Republican Congressmen to argue that it would be a bad thing if his plans provoked an economic crisis: To the contrary, that may well be exactly what they — and their billionaire owners — are hoping for.

The entire Hegseth saga confirms one thing: Donald Trump does not care about national security. It’s hard for people to grasp that; there’s never been another president I’d say that about. Hell, I wouldn’t even say it about Hegseth. He’s not qualified for the job and a lot of his ideas are, in my view, odious, but I’m willing to assume that he thinks he has the best interests of the nation in mind — just as I believe George W. Bush did with the Iraq invasion and Lyndon Johnson did in Vietnam.

More generally, I’m on the side of those who say not to question the motives of political actors. But in Trump’s case, I’m not so much questioning his motives as I am removing the normal assumption that he is motivated, among other things, by a sincere desire to keep the nation safe. Removing that assumption makes his actions a lot more understandable, whether it’s nominating Hegseth and Gabbard or leaving classified documents lying around where anyone could get at them, or not bothering with initial background checks before handing out security clearances.

Of course, every president has competing motives, including re-election, that sometimes can threaten national security priorities. That’s perfectly fine. Trump, however, doesn’t seem to give any weight at all to it. Oh, I forgot — he doesn’t pay attention during his security briefings, either.

You see now... You don't get to say shit like this after the last 4 years with the expectation that anyone outside of your cult will take you seriously.

I've already told you that Democrats, the Legacy Media and the entire leftist movement has lost its currency. Not only in the US, but worldwide. You know this is true because in an attempt to downplay the meaning of Trump being reelected for a 2nd term, you've posted no less than half a dozen articles stating that this was a worldwide trend.

You still don't understand the true extent of the damage that your party and Liberalism worldwide has done to itself over the last decade.

The world you thought you were living in 6 months ago no longer exists.

And I already told you 2 years ago in the Hollywood thread that I saw all of this coming.

The winds of change are blowing and with a simple test I can demonstrate that you are a bit of dust swirling around and near to being blown away. The test:

There are five people (A, B, C, D and E) in a room. A is watching TV with B, D is sleeping, B is eating chow mein, E is playing table tennis. Suddenly, a call came on the telephone, B went out of the room to answer the call. What is C doing? State your reasoning. 6ix, you have five seconds:

Select to view spoiler:

Given that there are five people in the room and E is playing table tennis, they would need a partner to play with. Since D is sleeping, and A was watching TV with B (who just left), A is likely still watching TV. This leaves C as the only person who could be playing table tennis with E.

Answer: C is playing table tennis with E.

That was an obvious one, since you don't play table tennis alone. It practically jumps out of the fucking page at you.

Might I suggest you don't offer the solution of a test immediately after asking the question in the future. This is what you "thought"?
Quote:

After a two-page Office of Management and Budget memo purporting to “pause” $3 trillion in federal spending to review whether it promoted “Marxist equity,” “transgenderism,” or “green new deal social engineering” triggered 36 hours of confusion, angry backlash, and a national shutdown of the Medicaid payment system, the Trump administration has abandoned the effort. Journalist Marisa Kabas scored the Memo That Undoes the Other Memo, which reads, simply: “OMB Memorandum M-25-13 is rescinded. If you have questions about implementing the President’s Executive Orders, please contact your agency General Counsel.”

So that’s that—sort of. For one, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has since put up a post on Twitter/X claiming that spending that promotes Marxism, etc., is still subject to a “freeze,” just not a freeze directed by OMB. This seems to mean that agencies are basically on the honor system as far as whether to spend their legally allocated money—but, really, who knows? It doesn’t seem as if robust planning and process-defining are features of this initiative.

In other words, what Trump did "Does Not Compute/Does Not Compute/Does Not Compute" and the White House staff undid what Trump did.

The government purge, explained

Why the exodus of government employees matters for everyone.

by Patrick Reis | Jan 29, 2025, 4:05 PM CST

urge-trump-musk

What’s the latest? The Trump administration last night emailed almost all federal employees with something between an invitation and a threat. The email gave them two options:

Resign effective at the end of September. Until then, you can keep your job and don’t necessarily have to come to the office.

Do nothing and keep working, while subject to new expectations (including in-office work requirements) and without any guarantee of job security.

It’s the latest in a string of actions designed to force out career government employees. (Career employees are the ones who keep their jobs from one president to the next; “political” appointees generally turn over with each administration.) Trump has also issued an executive order to temporarily raise the limit on how many noncareer appointees he’s allowed to have.

Why are they doing this? Trump’s team wants to thin the ranks of career employees and replace some of them with political appointees, shrinking government and giving the president more control of what remains.

If you don’t work in government, why should you care? Because the Trump administration is conducting a giant national experiment, and we’re all the subjects. Career employees bring longstanding expertise and continuity to the countless functions our government performs — everything from keeping airplanes in the sky to reviewing medication to enforcing laws to tracking national security threats.

Driving civil service members out of government en masse is a bet that these workers were never necessary to begin with. Many experts have warned that poses great risks for keeping the government functioning. If the purge is successful, we’ll all find out if they’re right.

If You Think the U.S. Will Abandon Ukraine Now, You Don't Know Donald Trump

President Donald Trump's recent apparent switch of positions regarding Russia and Ukraine is surprising many, but it shouldn't. We write this not as diplomats or historians, but as informed leadership scholars who have known Trump personally for decades; and having recently spent time on the ground in Ukraine, Central Europe, and Central Asia, we believe there are good reasons for Trump to reverse his position and escape Russian President Vladimir Putin's quicksand.

In a startling flurry of Truth Social posts and press conference remarks since taking office, Trump has revealed his pragmatism over principle. After once condemning President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine, he now praises Zelensky as a seeker of peace. Similarly, Trump has flipped from expressing admiration for Putin to declaring that Putin is destroying Russia. To diplomatic scholars, this is a paradox. To leadership scholars, Trump's reversals demonstrate the consistency of his character. That is because of three distinctive qualities of Trump's leadership style.

I'm sure that I told you dozens of times that the judicial system in America will malfunction if you have good enough defense lawyers to sabotage it for you. Vice President Aaron Burr murdered Alexander Hamilton. Did Burr go to jail? He did not. When Burr attempted to start a new country within the Louisiana Purchase, was Burr convicted of treason? He was not. When millions of Confederates murdered a million Americans, were they executed for what they did? No, they were pardoned. When thousands were lynched, who went to jail for murder? Nobody. When hundreds of thousands of Americans were placed in concentration camps during WWII, how many officials went to prison for this illegal behavior? Nobody. Did Vice President Spiro Agnew, Nixon's VP, go to jail for accepting bribes? Nope. If you've got enough money and connections, you can get away with murder in America. That's what makes America what it is, the Greatest Country in History! But not so great for losers like you, 6ix.

I completely forgot the Indians! Killed them by the millions. More recently there was "Killers of the Flower Moon" the movie and the book. Killed hundreds of Indians for their oil rights. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killers_of_the_Flower_Moon_(book)

From Chapter 26, Blood Cries Out, of Killers of the Flower Moon:
Quote:

Though the bureau estimated that there were twenty-four Osage murders, the real number was undoubtedly higher. The bureau closed its investigation after catching Hale and his henchmen. But at least some at the bureau knew that there were many more homicides that had been systematically covered up, evading their efforts of detection. An agent described, in a report, just one of the ways the killers did this: “In connection with the mysterious deaths of a large number of Indians, the perpetrators of the crime would get an Indian intoxicated, have a doctor examine him and pronounce him intoxicated, following which a morphine hypodermic would be injected into the Indian, and after the doctor’s departure the [killers] would inject an enormous amount of morphine under the armpit of the drunken Indian, which would result in his death. The doctor’s certificate would subsequently read ‘death from alcoholic poison.’ ”

Not only that, but it's been many years since I've been shocked by the fact that between the time your poisoned little brain conceived the murderous thoughts and the the time that you clicked the "SAVE RESPONSE" button here, there was no internal filter mechanism preventing you from posting your murder porn fantasies for the 100th time.

That's no surprise to me. This isn't directed at you Second but it is one more dead Indian and it doesn't matter the time frame. We are the bad guys. I grew up hearing horror stories from both sides of the border. More from the States because of my grandmother. Resources found on reserve land the government stars chipping away at the reserves. A lot was already land not fit for farming or anything. In the late 1800s you had Indian agents who were responsible to see that food was distributed among maybe a couple or 3 reserves. Indian agents would take the good meat and leave the maggot ridden for the reserves and who know what was in the flour. Course the alcohol which flowed freely on both sides of the border.

The worst people know how to display the outward appearance of being better people, but they have not internalized the rules of better behavior. The worst people reveal their inner rottenness when opportunities arise to profit. The worst will be the worst toward anybody, which brings me to Elon Musk.

Musk forced the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to resign because the FAA fined Musk $600,000 for breaking the rules before Trump was elected. A little more than one week after Trump was sworn in, there was a major plane crash in Washington DC caused by a helicopter pilot who felt he could fly wherever he pleased now that Trump is the President who doesn't follow rules. Too bad that Musk fired the head of the FAA but Musk doesn't follow rules, either, just like Trump.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. walked into his Senate confirmation hearing like a man stepping onto an ice rink wearing banana peels for shoes. He had one job: convince the world that he was not a bug-eyed conspiracy theorist who once hoarded a whale head and left a bear carcass in Central Park. Instead, he walked out as the leading cause of migraines among Democratic senators.

This was supposed to be his moment of redemption, his big I’m-not-actually-insane speech. Instead, it turned into a political demolition derby featuring protesters screaming that he was a liar and a killer, Bernie Sanders interrogating him about baby clothes, Elizabeth Warren asking if he planned to run HHS like a side hustle, and a surreal moment where Kennedy had to confirm that he probably said Lyme disease was a military bioweapon. By the end of the day, Capitol Police had forcibly removed more people from the chamber than a dive bar on St. Patrick’s Day.

Kennedy barely got through his opening statement before a woman exploded from the gallery like a jack-in-the-box filled with rage and science degrees.

“YOU LIE!” she screamed, holding up a sign that read VACCINES SAVE LIVES before being swiftly tackled and dragged out by Capitol Police.

Kennedy blinked rapidly, which is how you know he was hearing the voice of the worm that used to live in his brain whispering, Abort mission, Bobby. Abort mission.

A brief moment of peace settled over the room, and then it happened again.

“YOU’RE KILLING PEOPLE!” another protester howled, launching into a full-body rage spiral before security carried her out, legs kicking, like a screaming suitcase with opinions.

Kennedy took a deep breath and tried to regain his footing, but Senator Ron Wyden had been waiting for this moment like a prosecutor with a personal vendetta.

“Are you lying to us, Mr. Kennedy?” Wyden snapped, staring daggers at him.

Kennedy forced a nervous smile, but it came out looking like he’d just been told he had to fight a horse for a parking spot.

“That claim has been repeatedly debunked,” he said, attempting to sound reasonable despite an entire room full of people who were watching YouTube compilations of him saying the exact opposite.

Wyden wasn’t buying it.

“You signed a petition to restrict access to the COVID vaccine. Did you or did you not?”

Kennedy mumbled something about the petition being “misrepresented” as the air in the room thickened with sweat, bad decisions, and organic supplements.

Wyden was gearing up for a finishing blow when another protester detonated like a landmine.

“YOU’RE A FRAUD!” she shrieked as security dragged her away in a full-body lock.

Even the cops looked exhausted now.

Then came Bernie Sanders, a man who has not been in the mood for nonsense since 1972.

“Are you supportive of these baby onesies?” he demanded.

The room froze.

Kennedy’s brain crashed like a Windows 98 PC.

“Excuse me?”

Sanders lifted a printed-out photo of a baby bodysuit covered in anti-vaccine slogans.

“These are being sold by the Children’s Health Defense, the organization you founded.”

Kennedy looked like he had just accidentally eaten a ghost pepper and was trying to play it cool.

“I—I don’t have oversight over that organization anymore,” he mumbled.

Sanders cracked his knuckles like a man ready to fistfight a CEO and leaned in.

“Are you supportive of these onesies?”

Kennedy started sweating through his suit.

Laughter rippled through the room. A Republican senator actually covered his face.

Kennedy, now looking desperate for a fire alarm to pull, tried to pivot to his real passion: banning corn syrup.

Sanders wasn’t having it.

Then Elizabeth Warren took the mic, radiating pure prosecutorial energy.

“Will you commit to not taking money from pharmaceutical companies while serving as Secretary of Health?” she asked, in the tone of a woman who already knew the answer but was going to enjoy watching him squirm.

Kennedy grinned like a dog that just chewed up your furniture and is hoping you’ll laugh it off.

“I don’t think they’d want to give me money,” he chuckled.

Warren did not chuckle.

“Will you commit to not profiting from lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies while serving as HHS Secretary?”

Kennedy froze.

The color drained from his face.

“You’re asking me not to sue drug companies?” he said, voice rising.

“No, I’m not going to agree to that.”

Warren’s eyes gleamed like a hawk spotting a wounded rabbit.

“So you’ll be suing the same companies you’re supposed to regulate?”

Kennedy looked like he wanted to melt into his chair.

Then came Michael Bennet, a man who had been waiting patiently to drop a grenade into Kennedy’s lap.

“Did you say that Lyme disease was a militarily engineered bioweapon?” Bennet asked, deadpan.

Kennedy hesitated.

“I probably said that.”

The audience gasped.

Bennet cocked an eyebrow.

“Did you say that pesticides turn children transgender?”

Kennedy turned bone white.

“I don’t recall saying that.”

Bennet’s lip twitched.

“But you do recall saying Lyme disease was a bioweapon?”

Kennedy looked like he had been hit by a tranquilizer dart.

Even the Republican senators were staring at their desks, avoiding eye contact.

The hearing finally adjourned, but Kennedy is not in the clear yet.

His next grilling is scheduled for tomorrow, and there’s no telling how much worse it can get.

His opponents smell blood. His supporters are already crafting conspiracy theories about the deep state.

And if the vote ends in a deadlock, Vice President JD Vance will cast the deciding vote.

Yes, JD Vance—the political equivalent of a wet cardboard box—will determine if a man once partially controlled by a brain parasite will run America’s health system.

The nation waits in suspense. Pass the whiskey.

Classic example of taking credit when flying high, but blaming others when things crash and burn. Amazing what a difference a disaster makes.

It’s a Scam! It’s a Purge! It’s a Scam *and* a Purge
Trump offers federal buyouts for resignations

By Paul Krugman / Jan 30, 2025 at 5:33 AM

https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/its-a-scam-its-a-purge-its-a-scam

Before Donald Trump was inaugurated, there was extensive discussion of his known plans to convert a number of civil service jobs into presidential appointments, politicizing the higher levels of the federal bureaucracy. Since the inauguration, however, it has become clear that almost everyone greatly understated the threat. We’re now seeing clear efforts to politicize everything, to force every federal employee to act, in effect, as a MAGA operative.

The latest and biggest move has come in the form of an email from the Office of Personnel Management, which appears to have effectively been taken over by associates of Elon Musk, effectively offering a buyout to federal employees who resign in the next few days. On paper, it isn’t exactly a buyout; those who accept the offer will be placed on administrative leave but supposedly continue to be paid until September. But being told that you can stop working while receiving eight months’ salary is just a buyout by another name.

There are five things you should know about this plan:

1. It’s illegal

2. It’s almost surely a scam: workers who take the offer probably won’t see the money they’ve been promised

3. To the extent that workers actually take up the offer, they’ll be the workers we can least afford to lose

4. The move will cost, not save money

5. What this really amounts to is a purge, replacing professional civil servants with political loyalists

Legality: Some initial reports described the Trump plan — or is it the Musk plan? — as if it were a simple buyout, which immediately raised the question, where would the money come from? Congress hasn’t voted funding for a mass worker buyout, and the president doesn’t have the right to spend money without Congressional authorization.

The “administrative leave” language was probably intended as a way to get around that little problem. But someone didn’t do their homework. The law appears to make it clear that federal employees can be placed on administrative leave for no more than 10 days in a calendar year.

Now, does the law still matter? Laws must be enforced by people, and maybe we’re already at a place where Trump can simply ignore Congress’s power of the purse, choosing not to spend money on things Congress has funded while spending money on things it hasn’t authorized. But I don’t think we’re quite there yet.

The big scam: If you accept Trump’s deal, resigning but expecting to receive 8 months’ salary, you’re a fool. Trump has a history of not paying what he owes; the Wall Street Journal reported that his business career “left a long trail of unpaid bills,” while a separate study from USA Today found hundreds of contractors alleging that Trump doesn’t pay his bills.

So if you accept the not-a-buyout offer believing in Trump’s promise to keep paying your salary — a promise that won’t even be legally binding, because the whole thing is illegal anyway — you should expect to be stiffed. That’s just who he is and how he operates.

Losing the best: Some federal employees may be naïve enough to accept President Musk’s not-a-buyout offer. Others — my guess is a significant number of high-level workers — may leave because they’ve concluded that politicization and disrespect has degraded their work environment to the point that it’s not worth staying.

So who will leave? The workers we as a nation can least afford to lose.

Many people probably imagine that the federal government offers cushy, well-paid jobs. And as a 2024 report from the Congressional Budget showed, federal workers without a college degree generally do earn more than their counterparts in the private sector — in part because many of them are unionized:

Source: Congressional Budget Office

But more highly educated federal employees earn substantially less than their counterparts in the private sector. And my personal observation is that this is especially true for people with real expertise. I know federal employees who could clearly be making two or three times their current salaries if they moved to Wall Street. In fact, some of them actually did move to highly paid private-sector jobs for a while, before returning to public service even though it involved a big pay cut.

Why did they pay that price? Because they didn’t feel that their lucrative private-sector jobs had meaning in the way public service did. We live in an age in which it’s fashionable to bash government, but my experience has always been that, especially at the higher levels of the civil service, there’s far more idealism, far more eagerness to, well, serve than most people imagine.

But if the government is taken over by hacks with no respect for expertise — who, in fact, distrust people who know what they’re doing, and who value political loyalty above all else — the idealists will leave.

Money: From the earliest days of DOGE, it was obvious that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy — who does, in fact, appear to have been run out of DOGE — had no idea how the federal government spends its money. They made a big deal out of reducing the federal headcount, apparently imagining that payroll is a big part of the federal budget. In fact, civilian compensation is a small slice of the budget:

Source: Congressional Budget Office

And when you bear in mind that the not-a-buyout and the general politicization of the federal bureaucracy will systematically drive out people who are good at their jobs, it seems highly likely that the Musk/Trump actions will end up costing taxpayers money, perhaps a lot of it.

So why are they doing this? There isn’t really any mystery about what’s happening here. It’s possible that Elon Musk or whoever came up with this plan really believes that there’s a lot of deadwood in the federal work force — never underestimate how ignorant these people are about the government they’re trying to take over — but it’s pretty clear that the principal motivation is political. This is a purge, an attempt to push out government workers who believe that their job is to serve the public and replace them with Trump loyalists.

Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, gave the game away during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper. Tapper was trying to ask about the effects of the administration’s (also illegal) spending freeze, but Miller veered off course into a diatribe against the civil service:

"I want to really drill down on this, Jake, because it’s so important. There’s two million employees in the federal government. Overwhelmingly, the career federal service in this country is far left, left-wing."

That’s an absurd claim, unless you consider anyone who doesn’t regard Trump as our divinely anointed ruler far-left. Miller also claimed that 98 percent of USAID workers donated to Kamala Harris or “another left-wing candidate,” which is highly implausible — and also none of his business. The whole point of having a civil service is that the political leanings of federal workers aren’t supposed to matter.

And that professionalism is what they’re trying to kill.

President Blames D.E.I. and Biden for Crash Under Trump’s Watch

President Trump’s remarks, suggesting without evidence that diversity in hiring and other Biden administration policies somehow caused the disaster, reflected his instinct to immediately frame major events through his political or ideological lens.

President Trump blamed diversity requirements at the Federal Aviation Administration and his two Democratic predecessors for the midair collision over the Potomac River on Wednesday night, saying that standards for air traffic controllers had been too lax.

Mr. Trump cited no evidence, and even admitted when pressed that the investigation had only just begun.

Moments later, he blamed the pilots of the Army helicopter that appeared to fly into a passenger jet that was on final approach to Reagan National Airport, across the river from the capital.

Mr. Trump went back and forth between blaming diversity goals that he said were created by President Barack Obama and President Joseph R. Biden Jr., and then saying that an investigation was necessary.

His instant focus on diversity reflected his instinct to immediately frame major events through his political or ideological lens, whether the facts fit or not.

It is something he has done before: After a terrorist attack in New Orleans a month ago, he blamed illegal immigration, even though the attacker was a U.S. citizen born in Texas.

When asked how he could say that diversity hiring was to blame for the crash even though basic facts about the midair collision were still being sought by investigators, he said, “Because I have common sense.”

“For some jobs, we need the highest level of genius,” he said.

Of the F.A.A. under Mr. Obama, Mr. Trump said: “They actually came out with a directive, too white.”

An audio recording of the air traffic controllers’ warnings to the helicopter just before the crash indicated that a controller first warned the helicopter to look for a Canadair Regional Jet, and then told the helicopter pilot to go behind the jet as it was landing. That exchange will be part of the investigation.

Mr. Trump appeared in the White House briefing room with Vice President JD Vance; the newly sworn-in transportation secretary, Sean Duffy; and the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth. All three men began their comments by praising Mr. Trump’s leadership and repeating that they would eliminate diversity requirements and focus on competence.

Mr. Trump named a new acting head of the Federal Aviation Administration during the news conference; none had been appointed by him until Thursday. The appointee did not speak at the news conference, nor did the head of the National Transportation Safety Board, who was also in the room.

Just because YOU don't know who was on that helicopter doesn't mean that Trump doesn't already know.

Trump extorts $25 million from Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg has agreed to settle a vacuous lawsuit that Donald Trump filed against Meta years ago. Why now? Here's all you need to know:

Toward the end of the November dinner, Trump raised the matter of the lawsuit, the people said. The president signaled that the litigation had to be resolved before Zuckerberg could be “brought into the tent,” one of the people said.

A lovely post-election dinner at Mar-a-Lago. Maybe some relaxing chat afterward about Greenland and the Panama Canal. Then Trump "signaled" that the lawsuit had to be "resolved" before Zuckerberg could be "brought into the tent."

This is extortion. Trump, as always, chose the wording of his threats carefully but the meaning was crystal clear and Zuckerberg jumped at the opportunity. What choice did he have?

How to charge someone with extortion?
A prosecutor bringing an extortion charge usually needs to show that the defendant acquired or tried to acquire money or something else of value by threatening another person.

America's Deadliest Airliner Crash in 23 Years Happens a Week After Trump Guts Airline Safety Groups

By Victor Tangermann | January 30, 2025 at 9:12 AM CST

https://www.yahoo.com/news/americas-deadliest-airliner-crash-23-151206
386.html

Just over a week after firing the heads of the Transportation Security Administration and Coast Guard, eliminating all members of a key aviation security advisory group, and freezing all hiring at the Federal Aviation Administration including key air traffic controllers, the United States has experienced its deadliest aviation disaster in nearly 24 years.

The timing of the Trump administration's gutting of aviation safety prior to the crash is impossible to ignore.

Trump posted a chilling update on Truth Social in which he speculated wildly about the event in what sounds a lot like an attempt to deflect blame for the deadliest crash in the US since all 260 people aboard an American Airlines flight died just after takeoff on November 12, 2001, in New York, just two months after 9/11.

The Trump administration's gutting of aviation authorities highlights the potential consequences of throwing the entire federal government into chaos.

The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the incident. In the meantime, we should expect to hear more harebrained theories as to what may have led to the crash, considering the sheer amount of disorder the Trump administration has stirred up over its first two weeks.

On that note, multi-hyphenate billionaire and White House advisor Elon Musk — who has previously blamed Black pilots for causing plane crashes without providing any evidence whatsoever — has yet to comment on the matter.

"It will take an airplane crashing and killing hundreds of people for them to change this crazy policy of DIE," he wrote in a January 9 tweet, a bafflingly racist outburst that intentionally mixed up the letters of the acronym for "diversity, equity, and inclusion."

The deplorable utterance had civil groups horrified at the time.

It was either the airline's fault or the military's fault.

I have no love for either of them, so I don't care who's fault it is.

But unlike the last 4 years where anything goes, an investigation will be conducted and we will find out who was responsible.

And god help them if it was a DEI hire that killed all those people.
