Trump ran for office on the premise of non-intervention and resolving global military conflicts peacefully, not more American adventurism.

Trump just openly committed American arms, honor, and credibility to forcibly expel Gaza’s Palestinian population and redevelop the territory into a glittering tourist hub. It may torpedo any remaining hope of an enduring Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. It also hands every Islamist militant group an airtight propaganda victory: proof, in their eyes, that the United States is indeed the 'Great Satan.'

One of the most telling reactions to Trump's Gaza proposal came from his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, a longtime GOP strategist with a reputation for whipping those around her into ruthless discipline; she looked on at Trump, her eyes bulging and her expression astonished.

The widely photographed look on Susie Wiles’s face spoke volumes.

The duty of stating the obvious

Trump’s proposal for the US to “take over” Gaza and expel its inhabitants is, like nearly everything else Trump has said and done over the past two weeks and indeed the past decade, completely batshit insane. As with countless other Trump proposals, I don’t see that it will actually happen — both because most Gazans will refuse to leave, and because Arab countries will refuse to take them.

Of course it’s a coup

Miss the obvious, lose your republic

Timothy Snyder | Feb 05, 2025

https://snyder.substack.com/p/of-course-its-a-coup

. . . The ongoing actions by Musk and his followers are a coup because the individuals seizing power have no right to it. Elon Musk was elected to no office and no office would give him the authority to do what he is doing. It is all illegal. It is also a coup in its intended effects: to undo democratic practice and violate human rights.

In gaining data about us all, Musk has trampled on any notion of privacy and dignity, as well as on the explicit and implicit agreements made with our government when we pay our taxes or our student loans. And the possession of that data enables blackmail and further crimes.

In gaining the ability to stop payments by the Department of the Treasury, Musk would also make democracy meaningless. We vote for representatives in Congress, who pass laws that determine how our tax money is spent. If Musk has the power to halt this process at the level of payment, he can make laws meaningless. Which means, in turn, that Congress is meaningless, and our votes are meaningless, as is our citizenship.

If Musk controls these digital systems, Republican elected officials will be just as helpless as Democratic ones. The institutions that they voted to create can also be “deleted,” as Musk puts it.

President Trump, for that matter, will also perform at Musk’s pleasure. There is not much he can do without the use of the federal government’s computers. No one will explain this to Trump or to his supporters, of course.

A coup is underway, against Americans as possessors of human rights and dignities, and against Americans as citizens of a democratic republic. Each hour this goes unrecognized makes the success of the coup more likely.

Oh, puhleez!

More overwrought analogies and handwringing?

Nobody that's getting fired or suspended was elected to that office.

NOBODY.

So who gave them the authority to decide foreign policy, collect info on us all in the first place, autopay terrorists, and lawfare public figures? Where does this authority derive from, Constitutionally? AFAIK they serve at the pleasure of the only person in the entire appx 1.7 million employee executive branch, and that's the President.

The President's power is limited by legal review and separation of powers. As long as what Trump is doing falls under legal review, it's not a coup, bc a coup by definition is ILLEGAL usurpation of power. And if ultimately it is Trump authorizing these activities, then it's not Musk taking control of the government.

What Trump said about Gaza was not only horrific, if implemented it would be as self- serving as anything Biden did.

What he said

Quote:

I’m delighted to welcome Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu back to the White House. It’s a wonderful feeling and a wonderful event. We had fantastic talks, and thank you very much, with your staff.

“I want to say it’s an honour to have you with us. Over the past four years, the US and the Israeli alliance has been tested more than any time in history, but the bonds of friendship and affection between the American and Israeli people have endured for generations and they are absolutely unbreakable.

“I’m confident that, under our leadership, the cherished alliance between our two countries will soon be stronger than ever. We had a great relationship. We had great victories together four years ago, not so many victories over the past four years, however. In my first term, prime minister and I forged a tremendously successful partnership that brought peace and stability to the Middle East like it hadn’t seen in decades.

“Together, we defeated ISIS [ISIL], we ended the disastrous Iran nuclear deal, one of the worst deals ever made, and imposed the toughest ever sanctions on the Iranian regime. We starved Hamas and Iran’s other terrorist proxies, and we starved them like they had never seen before, resources and support disappeared for them.

“I recognised Israel’s capital, opened the American embassy in Jerusalem and got it built. We got it built. It’s beautiful, all Jerusalem stone right from nearby and it was – it’s something that’s very special.

“And recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, something that they talked about for 70 years and they weren’t able to get it. And I got it. And with the historic Abraham Accords, something that was really an achievement that was, I think, going to become more and more important because we achieved the most significant Middle East peace agreements in half a century.

“And I really believe that many countries will soon be joining this amazing peace and economic development transaction. It really is a big economic development transaction. I think we’re going to have a lot of people signing up very quickly. Unfortunately, for four years, nobody signed up. Nobody did anything for four years except in the negative.

“Unfortunately, the weakness and incompetence of those past four years, the grave damage around the globe that was done, including in the Middle East, grave damage all over the globe. The horrors of October 7th would never have happened if I were president, the Ukraine and Russia disaster would never have happened if I were president.

“Over the past 16 months, Israel has endured a sustained aggressive and murderous assault on every front, but they fought back bravely. You see that and you know that. What we have witnessed is an all-out attack on the very existence of a Jewish state in the Jewish homeland. The Israelis have stood strong and united in the face of an enemy that has kidnapped, tortured, raped and slaughtered innocent men, women, children and even little babies.

“I want to salute the Israeli people for meeting this trial with courage and determination and unflinching resolve. They have been strong. In our meetings today, the prime minister and I focused on the future, discussing how we can work together to ensure Hamas is eliminated and ultimately restore peace to a very troubled region.

“It’s been troubled, but what has happened in the last four years has not been good.

“I also strongly believe that the Gaza Strip, which has been a symbol of death and destruction for so many decades and so bad for the people anywhere near it, and especially those who live there and frankly who’s been really very unlucky. It’s been very unlucky. It’s been an unlucky place for a long time.

“Being in its presence just has not been good and it should not go through a process of rebuilding and occupation by the same people that have really stood there and fought for it and lived there and died there and lived a miserable existence there. Instead, we should go to other countries of interest with humanitarian hearts, and there are many of them that want to do this and build various domains that will ultimately be occupied by the 1.8 million Palestinians living in Gaza, ending the death and destruction and frankly bad luck.

“This can be paid for by neighbouring countries of great wealth. It could be one, two, three, four, five, seven, eight, 12. It could be numerous sites, or it could be one large site. But the people will be able to live in comfort and peace and we’ll make sure something really spectacular is done.

“They’re going to have peace. They’re not going to be shot at and killed and destroyed like this civilisation of wonderful people has had to endure. The only reason the Palestinians want to go back to Gaza is they have no alternative. It’s right now a demolition site. This is just a demolition site. Virtually every building is down.

“They’re living under fallen concrete that’s very dangerous and very precarious. They instead can occupy all of a beautiful area with homes and safety and they can live out their lives in peace and harmony instead of having to go back and do it again.

“The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings, level it out. Create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area … do a real job, do something different.

“Just can’t go back. If you go back, it’s going to end up the same way it has for 100 years. I’m hopeful that this ceasefire could be the beginning of a larger and more enduring peace that will end the bloodshed and killing once and for all. With the same goal in mind, my administration has been moving quickly to restore trust in the alliance and rebuild American strength throughout the region and we’ve really done that.

“I ended the last administration’s de facto arms embargo on over $1bn, in military assistance for Israel. And I’m also pleased to announce that this afternoon, the United States withdrew from the anti-Semitic UN Human Rights Council and ended all of the support for the UN Relief and Works Agency, which funnelled money to Hamas, and which was very disloyal to humanity.”

I know that most Americans, Democrat and Republican, are automatically anti - Muslim, thanks to GWB marrying the words 'Muslim + terrorist' so often that most people are conditioned to think them inseparably. I know thst most Americans of BOTH parties are automatically pro Israel, thanks to Israeli and native Jewish stranglehold on the media when it comes to all things concerning the Middle East. But what Trump proposes is heinous, a crime against humanity. And if the moral aspect isn't enough, those kinds of actions can boomerang, destructively, especially in today's multipolar world.

"This Is Where The Big Money Fraud Is Happening": DOGE Dives Into Medicare Payment Malarkey
Wednesday, Feb 05, 2025 - 08:00 PM

Representatives of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) - who just obtained security clearances, have been embedded at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) this week, gaining access to critical payment and contracting systems, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing multiple individuals familiar with the situation.

The DOGE representatives have been on site at the agency’s offices this week, the people said, and they are looking at the systems’ technology as well as the spending that flows through them, with a focus on pinpointing what they consider fraud or waste. DOGE representatives are also examining the agency’s organizational design and how it is staffed, the people added.

Musk confirmed his interest in CMS oversight in a social media post, writing on X: "Yeah, this is where the big money fraud is happening."

The White House and DOGE officials declined to comment on the matter. In the last week, Musk’s DOGE team has been moving swiftly to gain access across multiple federal agencies, including the Treasury Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to uncover fraud, abuse, and excessive spending.

A CMS official told the Journal that the agency has assigned “two senior agency veterans who are leading the coordination with DOGE," and that leaders are "taking a thoughtful approach to see where there may be opportunities for more effective and efficient spending in line with meeting the goals of President Trump."

CMS sits at the heart of the nation’s healthcare economy, managing a budget of approximately $1.5 trillion in fiscal 2024 - roughly 22 percent of total federal spending. The agency employs around 6,710 people and administers Medicare, Medicaid, and other healthcare programs vital to millions of Americans. Many of its employees have spent decades navigating the complex regulatory and operational framework underpinning the healthcare system.

Among the systems DOGE representatives have accessed is CALM, the CMS Acquisition Lifecycle Management system, which contains contract data, sources said. However, they noted that DOGE personnel have not yet gained entry to databases containing personally identifiable health information of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. They also have not accessed HIGLAS, the Healthcare Integrated General Ledger Accounting System, a key accounting platform for CMS payments.

One person familiar with DOGE’s work at CMS emphasized that the current level of access is "read-only," preventing Musk’s team from making modifications to the systems.

The intervention has raised concerns among CMS veterans and healthcare policy experts. The agency’s payment structures are notoriously complex, involving multiple layers of contractors and private insurers, especially within Medicare. Medicaid, jointly administered by federal and state governments, follows different financial pathways, with federal funding typically flowing to state agencies.

One thing I see on my EOBs is that actual healthcare providers don't seem to be getting paid enough, at least not for an expensive region like southern California. Many no longer acceot Medicare insurance. If there is fraud, abuse, and waste occurring, and it's wrung out of the system, that could preserve funding for legitimate health care.

Nationwide, the numbers are not much different than California. There will always be American doctors who would let you die rather than accept even $1.00 less payment. In other countries, such doctors would be kicked out of the profession and then pissed in the face by their former colleagues.

There’s No Magic Solution To The Slowdown In U.S. Output Growth

Trump's assumptions about U.S. oil’s fungibility and supply elasticity are flawed.

By Alex Kimani - Feb 05, 2025, 7:00 PM CST

https://oilprice.com/Energy/Crude-Oil/Theres-No-Magic-Solution-To-The-
Slowdown-In-US-Output-Growth.html

An executive order signed by President Trump titled ‘Unleashing American Energy’ signed on 20 January detailed oil’s importance in restoring U.S. economic and military security. The executive order describes oil as an abundant low-cost resource that has been held back by regulations, and that can now be freed to fuel a renaissance in manufacturing thanks to the cost advantage of cheap oil.

Commodity analysts at Standard Chartered have pointed out that Trump’s view of U.S. oil hinges on several assumptions: that oil is fungible and hence, for example, substitution between foreign heavy crude refined in Illinois and light sweet Permian Basin crude is easy, and the supply curve for unconstrained U.S. oil is highly elastic with a low marginal cost. StanChart says these assumptions are flawed, arguing that the U.S. oil supply curve is likely to remain stubbornly high and steep rather than low and flat.

StanChart has predicted that the dramatic slowdown in U.S. oil production growth that we witnessed in 2024 will continue over the next two years. (That is exactly the opposite of Trump’s predictions.)

How Trump Lost His Trade War

By David Frum | February 5, 2025, 1:42 PM ET

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/02/trump-tariffs-mexico
-canada/681579
/

Round one of Donald Trump’s trade war has come to an inglorious end. The United States has suspended its threats against Canada and Mexico in return for border-enforcement measures that Canada and Mexico either were doing anyway or had done before without making much difference in the flow of drugs. What can Americans and others learn from this costly episode—other than not to repeat it? The following:

1) American tariffs hurt Americans.

President Donald Trump has always insisted that tariffs are paid by foreigners, that they put free money into the U.S. Treasury. Trump’s week-long tariff war confirmed that nobody else in the U.S. government or in American business believes him. The National Association of Home Builders published a letter to the president predicting that his tariffs would raise the cost of housing construction. Automobile stocks slumped because investors expected Trump’s tariffs to add thousands of dollars to the cost of each new vehicle. The senior Republican in the Senate publicly pleaded for potash to be exempted from tariffs so as not to increase fertilizer prices for his farm constituents, belying Trump’s claim that the higher prices would be paid by the exporters.

2) Tariffs beget retaliatory tariffs.

When Trump paused tariffs on Canada and Mexico, those countries halted their retaliatory actions. But China is proceeding with a range of tariffs against U.S. exports, reserving more retaliation for later. Americans are already paying for previous rounds of Trump trade actions against China. In the first Trump presidency, China cut its purchases of U.S. soybeans by 75 percent over a single year in 2018. Brazil in 2018 overtook the United States as the world’s largest soybean producer. During the campaign of 2024, the vice-presidential candidate J. D. Vance lamented that the United States had become a net importer of food. He omitted to mention that a reason for this status was precisely the harm done to U.S. farm exports by Trump’s first-term tariffs.

3) There’s not much point in negotiating trade treaties with the United States.

Trump renegotiated NAFTA during his first term, replacing it with his USMCA deal. Now, in his second term, he has reneged on that. Trump’s version of NAFTA offered a range of legal ways to terminate the agreement; he did not use any of them. He did not even pretend that Canada or Mexico had somehow defaulted on their end of the bargain. He simply ignored the deal and proceeded with his tariffs under a series of contradictory excuses.

Days earlier, Trump had issued a flurry of threats against Colombia, which also has a trade agreement with the United States. Again, Trump ignored all the legalities of the treaty; again, he used trade as a weapon to resolve nontrade disagreements.

Mexico and Canada have oriented their economies to the U.S. under first NAFTA and then USMCA. That probably will not alter even after Trump’s episode of blackmail. But other countries, farther away, may wonder whether there’s any point in signing deals with such a bad-faith partner as the United States has become.

4) “Friend-shoring” is a fiction.

As relations have worsened between the United States and China, many in the U.S. government have looked to friend-shoring as a way to keep most of the benefits of free trade. The idea is to redirect U.S. purchasing power away from hostile China and toward more trustworthy partners. The assumption behind the term is that those partners will gladly trust the United States.

Trump, Vice President Vance, and their allies in Congress have threatened unilateral military action against Mexico; Trump himself indulges in speculation about the forced annexation of Greenland from NATO ally Denmark and about absorbing Canada as a 51st state.

Maybe that’s all just a lot of ugly talk. But the president has made clear that so-called friendship with the United States does not ensure anything for America’s partners: not trade access, not the security of treaties, not even their territorial integrity and national independence.

Friend-shoring imagined extending trade with American allies. Trump-shoring means that today’s ally can become tomorrow’s enemy, without cause or even warning.

5) Instability is the future.

Trump has now allowed North American trade a 30-day reprieve. His supporters want to claim that he won big concessions worth all the tumult he caused. Such claims are transparently untrue. Canada had made its big proposals for more cooperation on border issues back in December. In any case, as former Prime Minister Stephen Harper has observed, illegal drugs are much more likely to flow north into Canada than south from Canada. Mexico’s offer to (once again) shift National Guard units to the border from other duties inside the country is generally recognized as symbolic. The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page correctly identified the embarrassing truth in a headline on Monday: “Trump Blinks on North American Tariffs.”

6) Trump is a uniquely emotionally needy president, prone to impulsive vindictiveness.

In 2019, Trump Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney forbade Homeland Secretary Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to discuss threats to the integrity of the 2020 election. Such discussions upset Trump, The New York Times reported, by reminding him of questions about Russian interference in the 2016 election. In mid-November 2020, Trump refused to hear or think more about the coronavirus pandemic even as fatalities spiked to their peak. An aide explained to The Washington Post that Trump was “just done with COVID … It just exceeded the amount of time he gave it.” For two weeks after the election of 2020, he forbade his administration to cooperate with the transition process and denied Joe Biden’s team access to information and the funds required by law.

As Trump confronts derision about his splendid little trade war of February 2025, will he lash out again? And how is any business of any size supposed to plan for the future when the president creates economic crises to act out his ravenous ego needs?

7) “America First” makes it safer not to be America’s ally.

In 2024, the U.S. ran a trade deficit with Canada of about $55 billion. That same year, it ran a deficit with Vietnam of about $123 billion, more than twice as much, and with Thailand of about $46 billion, only slightly less. Yet it was Canada, not Vietnam or Thailand, that Trump threatened with tariffs.

One difference: Canada is as a rule closely aligned with the United States. By geography, by history, by ideology, Canada has few geopolitical options. Vietnam and Thailand, however, have worked hard to balance their relationships with the two greatest powers, and hostile U.S. action against either could swing that country toward China, away from the United States.

A lesson of Trump’s trade war that all the world will hear: Countries such as Canada, Mexico, and Denmark that commit to the United States risk their security and dignity in the age of Trump. Countries such as Vietnam and Thailand that carefully navigate between the two great economic powers without making undue commitments maximize their security and their dignity.

To reward non-aligned countries and punish U.S.-aligned ones might seem a reckless, even a perverse, choice by a U.S. president. But that’s the president Americans have, and the choice he has made for them.

Trump and Trumptards were described: "Trump is a uniquely emotionally needy president, prone to impulsive vindictiveness." Those three character flaws: emotionally needy, impulsive and vindictiveness have caused Trumptard divorces, financial failures, and other suffering.

I became aware of doctors dropping out of Medicare when I found the allergist/immunologist I was referred to no longer accepted it. AFA your figures... you are correct. Altho California is ranked in the 2nd highest category of non-participating physicians, 98% accept Medicare as payment in full. With the recent bout of inflation, this is a figure that bears watching. Fortunately, its being watched.

I already posted extensively about oil, and the problem that our light sweet crude poses for our refineries. I concluded that altho we could continue to export oil, since we can't use it exclusively we would be advised to import heavy oil from some place convenient, like Venezuela.

Furthermore, oil recovered by fracking drops off by 95% in 5 years (according to one study) and must constantly be "restimulated". Fracked oil is necessarily more expensive to recover than conventional oil.

Canada accounts for a staggering 61 percent of all imported oil to the US. Canadian crude is heavy and from tar sand. Trump, knowing nothing about oil refineries, was going to place tariffs on crude oil.

I just found out that only 1.5% of Japan’s population is Christian and I’m heartbroken.
https://www.threads.net/@camillecardonaa/post/DDJ8tkepy-K?hl=en

Hi. Japan's homicide rate is 0.7 cases per 100K. United States homicide rate is 5.7 cases per 100K.
Japan's unhoused population in 2024: 2,820. United States unhoused: 653,104.
Japan also has one of the highest food security rates in the whole big world. Meanwhile, in the US, 18 million people are food insecure.
Maybe this Sunday you can ask the Christians what their bible says about poor people and murder. Sorry about your heart.

JoeJustice @JoeJustice
Japan has one of the lowest murder rates, lowest crime rates, and highest longevity rates. Difficult to measure, but arguably the most polite and considerate of others. But only 4% of the population believes in God or a supreme being. So, how does it work? It’s called Dotoku, a class in all grades, modeled by teachers, and supported by all public services. It teaches how to act and respond in many different situations for a harmonious society.

America compares poorly to Japan because Trump and his Trumptards behave disgracefully. Democrats cannot fix what is wrong with people psychologically opposed to decency.

All the ways Elon Musk is breaking the law, explained by a law professor

There are a lot of them.

David Super, an administrative law professor at Georgetown Law School, recently told the Washington Post that so many of Musk’s moves were “so wildly illegal” that he seemed to be “playing a quantity game, and assuming the system can’t react to all this illegality at once.”

I reached out to Super so he could walk through this quantity game — so he could take me on a tour of all of the apparent lawbreaking in Musk’s effort so far. A transcript of our conversation, condensed and edited for clarity, follows.

You guys see Karoline Leavitt today?

When telling everyone that men can no longer play in women's sports by law, one of the reporters asked "what do you have to say to schools who don't comply?"?

"Well... They should, because (looks down at watch) it's going to be federal law in about an hour and a half."

Democrats are so fucked.

It really isn’t. Section 6563(a) of Title 22 of the US code says, there is a USAID. It doesn’t say there can be. It doesn’t say, “If the president wants to.” It says, there is a USAID. So to close it down means to defy that statute. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/22/6563

If Musk is defying the US Code, Democrats should avoid taking him to court. Instead, take him outside and shoot him in the head, execution style.

It is fast. It is easy. And the Supreme Court can’t overrule a bullet in Musk’s brain. Musk is depending on Democrats not doing what Lincoln did to the Confederates. Musk is probably safe because Democrats don’t believe they can stop a tyrant like Musk by simply executing him based on the Second Amendment to the Constitution and the Fifth Amendment to not admit to killing Musk.

The primary purpose of the Second Amendment is to ensure that should a tyrannical power overtake the Nation, Americans will be able to defend themselves; because this danger always exists, gun control should be prohibited.

Wow, a whole lotta unresolved anger there, SECOND!

Am I angry when I kill a deer? Looking back, it is pretty cold situation for me. The deer has to die for dog food. But what about that 2nd Amendment argument about guns being for killing tyrants? I think the 2nd Amendment has NEVER been used in such a fashion. Trumptards use the anti-tyrant argument but history says the 2nd Amendment only prevented an Abolitionist majority in Congress from taking the guns of cotton planters hunting for runaway slaves/freed slaves. In the Supreme Court case United States v. Cruikshank, 92 U.S. 542 (1875), the defendants were white men who had killed more than sixty black people in what was known as the Colfax massacre. The Supreme Court said it was okay for whites to kill blacks because of the 2nd Amendment. Also, anti-Ku-Klux-Klan statutes are unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court decided it was legal for whites to kill blacks:

Really? The Confederates predicted they would conquer American, and for a long while it looked like it would happen, but then Lincoln found some generals who murdered Confederates, unlike General George B. McClellan. McClellan was not very helpful in defeating Confederates because he spent most of his time thinking of ways to defeat Lincoln and to be kind to Confederates:

Incumbent President Abraham Lincoln of the National Union Party easily defeated the Democratic nominee, former General George B. McClellan, by a wide margin of 212–21 in the electoral college, with 55% of the popular vote.

You Can’t Post Your Way Out of Fascism

Authoritarians and tech CEOs now share the same goal: to keep us locked in an eternal doomscroll instead of organizing against them, Janus Rose writes.

By Janus Rose | Feb 5, 2025 at 11:47 AM

https://www.404media.co/you-cant-post-your-way-out-of-fascism/

If there’s one thing I’d hoped people had learned going into the next four years of Donald Trump as president, it’s that spending lots of time online posting about what people in power are saying and doing is not going to accomplish anything. If anything, it’s exactly what they want.

. . .

We don’t need any more irony-poisoned hot takes or cathartic, irreverent snark. We need to collectively decide what kind of world we actually do want, and what we’re willing to do to achieve it.

Over a hundred Indian nationals were deported from the US on a costly military flight. The operation underscored the Trump administration's commitment to cracking down on illegal immigration, with each deportee's journey amounting to over $10,000 due to the high cost of military transport.

The flight, a US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III, landed in Amritsar on Wednesday with 104 deportees aboard. The C-17 aircraft is a US military transport plane that is significantly more expensive than both first-class and chartered flights typically used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportations.

Military flights are considerably more expensive than civilian ones. According to documents released by the US Air Mobility Command, the cost of operating a C-17 aircraft for transport is $28,562 per flight hour. After more than 43 hours in the air, the flight landed at Amritsar Airport.

The total cost of the flight, factoring in the return journey to a US air base, is estimated to be over $1 million, or more than $10,000 per detainee. By contrast, a commercial one-way ticket from San Francisco to New Delhi typically costs around $500, or $4,000 for business class.

Autogolpe
What’s really happening beneath the Musk/Trump chaos

By Paul Krugman | Feb 07, 2025

https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/autogolpe

For those writing or talking about what’s happening, it is important not to get distracted by Trump’s bright, shiny objects. No, Trump isn’t going to take over Gaza, annex Canada, try to retake the Panama Canal or seize Greenland. Trump’s bizarre announcements are a distraction.

Until a few days ago I thought a gratuitous trade war would actually happen, since tariffs have been a Trump obsession for decades. But his ignominious climbdown over tariffs on Canada and Mexico suggests that I may have taken the distraction all too seriously.

The alliance between Musk and Trump, two men with giant but obviously fragile egos, could break down. Musk’s meddling at Treasury and the assault on federal workers may lead to some highly visible disasters. Voters may eventually realize that Trump’s claims of success are smoke and mirrors and wonder what happened to his promise to make groceries cheaper. And at some point the American people may notice that Russell Vought, the father of the immensely unpopular Project 2025, is actually making policy.

Donald Trump campaigned against consensual reality and won. Every plank of his platform – from the economy to immigration to abortion – was based on easily provable lies.

Despite Trump’s bombastic assertions to the contrary, inflation is down, growth is up, illegal border crossings are down, crime is down, and vaccines work great. Tariffs are taxes on imports and American companies say they’re planning to raise prices.

Delusion strongly predicted a vote for Trump. An Ipsos poll in the final weeks of the campaign found that voters who falsely believed that we are living through a record-breaking violent crime wave favored Trump by 26 points, while those who knew the truth broke for Harris by 65 points. Those who knew that the inflation rate is back to the historic average favored Harris by 53 points. Respondents who knew that illegal border crossings are down favored Harris by 59 points.

CBS correspondent Leslie Stahl once asked Donald Trump why he constantly attacked the press. “I do it to discredit you all and demean you all so when you write negative stories about me, no one will believe you,” Trump replied.

Trump also discredits the government as a source of information. When the latest statistics showed that crime was down, Trump accused the FBI of making them up. When the jobs report was revised, Trump accused Harris of faking it.

Trump’s followers reinterpret his 34 felony convictions as evidence of the plot against him, rather than evidence of his terrible behavior.

Once you dismiss any evidence that clashes with your prejudices as part of the conspiracy, you are free to create your own reality.

This is why social scientists have been warning about the link between conspiracism and totalitarianism for a century. Care for an example? There was never any evidence that the Jews secretly controlled the world – but it didn't matter because lack of evidence was proof that the Jews controlled the press, and the universities, and science and the arts. Jews in pre-war Germany didn't control any of those things – but no evidence to the contrary could penetrate the conspiracy theory. And the complete absence of evidence for their hegemony was just proof of Jewish total domination of Germany.

If everything you don't like becomes evidence of your opponent's plot to destroy you, you can't discuss anything rationally. Care for a more recent example than Nazi Germany? Human-caused climate change is a fact. But conspiracism takes the debate out of the realm of evidence and into the realm of character assassination of scientists and their supporters. It paints them as hoaxers and saboteurs. Vaccines have saved hundreds of millions of lives, but instead of debating their merits based on evidence, anti-vaxers portray their opponents as agents of a nefarious coverup to kill children. And it's completely irrefutable within their conceptual framework. When scientists or the government or journalists come forward with evidence that vaccines save millions of lives and prevent untold suffering, the conspiracist answer is: Well, that's what conspirators to kill our children would say.

Law Professor Flags Trump 'Doomsday Scenario' That'll Cause 'Real Constitutional Crisis'

"A lot of lawyers are worried about" it, warned New York University's Ryan Goodman.

What happens if Donald Trump decides he will not abide by a court ruling?

Simmons suggested “we’re in a real jam” if Trump simply tells the Justice Department to ignore any court orders that prohibit him from carrying out his agenda.

Goodman agreed.

“That’s right. I think that is the doomsday scenario,” he reiterated.

Goodman pointed out that it “hasn’t happened yet” that the Trump administration has refused to abide by a court order, despite it possibly appearing to some people that they are.

“But what happens come the day that they do lose at the Supreme Court?” he asked. “Because I think some of these cases are just losers. And if they really want to push it, we’re in a real constitutional crisis.”

Co-President Elon Musk's Tesla is having sales trouble in Germany because of his Nazi salutes -- "Sieg Heil, mein Führer Trump!" (We are not Nazis say Nazi Trumptards)

In January of 2025, only 1,277 new Teslas were registered in Germany, according to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority. This marks a 59.5% drop in sales from January of 2024. However, the German EV market has grown over 50% year after year. As a result, Tesla's market share dropped from 14% to 4% in the country containing the company's only European manufacturing plant, reported Financial Times.

Tesla owners in Germany are reportedly attempting to distance themselves from Musk as much as possible, with one artist and designer becoming overwhelmed with orders for a bumper sticker he created reading, "I bought this before Elon went crazy." The designer, who is from the south-west state of Baden-Württemberg, said he received 2,000 orders for the sticker in one weekend.

I wonder how much USAID money people like Kevin Drum have been getting.

I wonder how much longer people like Kevin Drum will be making his brainless little graphs for his brainlet readers when he's not being paid to do so anymore?

6ixStringJack, you are on Medicaid for diabetes and your little brother is receiving SSI after being dropped on his head by a bipolar mommy -- wasteful Federal spending. https://www.ssa.gov/ssi

Meanwhile, Kevin Drum got rich by working, unlike the angry poor white trash who are Trumptards. All the Trumptards I know tell me they are very important people who are entitled to success in America despite being without achievements. No Trumptard is entitled to better than being kicked in the head. Not long ago, America was more than the sum of its parts. Now, it is less. Around World War II, we were proud as a people but modest as individuals. Fewer than two people in ten said yes when asked, Are you a very important person? Today, more than six in ten say yes. All Trumptards say yes. Where we once thought ourselves collectively strong, we now regard ourselves as individually entitled.

Why do bad things happen to 6ixStringJack and family? For simple reasons:

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Not much new here, except the revelation how long DOGE has been preparing. An excellent summary, well written.

Authored by James Howard Kunstler,

"They never prepared for algorithms that could map everything. For personnel pre-positioned everywhere. For a president who counts every week like it's his last." - VP JD Vance

If you wondered since 2016 how come the blob and the Democratic Party were aligned so exquisitely in their operations to destroy populism (personified by Mr. Trump) and to permanently entrench single party power in America for all time to come, it’s because an endless font of taxpayer money was streamed into countless non-governmental orgs creating a shadow civil service of Democratic Party activists that melded seamlessly with the big policy-making agencies.

The money was laundered through manifold layers of these orgs and their sub-orgs to pay for an ongoing “color revolution” in the USA — lawfare, election fraud, propaganda, censorship, career cancellation, medical fuckery, open borders, and other totalitarian ploys — while enriching political players at all those manifold layers from multi-millionaire congressmen and senators to thousands of NGO officials making six-figure salaries to street hustlers like Patrisse Cullors of Black Lives Matter and “anti-racism” racist Ibram X. Kendi and his $50-million Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University (recently axed) — and, of course, ultimately the former Potemkin president “Joe Biden” and his family.

It was all this money that drove eight years of sponsored insanity. Mainly, it kept the hands of the Democratic Party firmly on the levers of power so that nothing could be done about the insults and injuries they were inflicting on our country. So, is it a mystery now that nobody was prosecuted for burning the cities in 2020, or for magically creating millions of extra “Joe Biden” votes out of nowhere that year, or setting up the kickback machine from Ukraine to Congress, or forcing millions to get a janky vaccine?

Pam Bondi is going to be a busy girl.

The DOGE has uncovered a government racketeering operation of which the USAID scandal is but one cog in a colossal engine of grift. What the public, including you readers, may not appreciate is how much planning went on over the past year to mount the DOGE effort, and how comprehensively the work of its many hundreds of computer techies (not just six whiz-kids) has laid bare the money-trails out of previously impenetrable government computers. Their algorithms have pierced firewalls, revealing decades of fraud and deceit.

Mr. Trump’s cabinet officers have started the job of dismantling the machine by getting rid of the employees who set it up and worked for it. By Thursday, Secretary of State Rubio, fired all but 300 of the 10,000 people working for USAID. CIA Director Ratcliffe offered the agency’s entire workforce a “deferred resignation” option that will allow them to bail out and still collect their salaries until September. Look for straight-up firings to ensue. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove ordered the acting FBI director to terminate eight senior FBI officials and asked for a review of up to 5,000 involved in J-6 investigations (including, presumably, agents who engaged in abusive SWAT-team deployments).

Many lawsuits have been mounted by blob-adjacent attorneys to make all this stop. But one big problem for them is that their gigantic legal fees — hundreds of dollars an hour on the meter multiplied by x-hundreds of lawyers— were previously paid by exactly those NGOs that are getting shut down now. So, perhaps you see exactly how those levers of power worked. The money will have to come from somewhere else, and I doubt that Silicon Valley billionaire blob-supporter Reid Hoffman wants to piss away the rest of his fortune on this.

Some actual persons will have to be held accountable for all the mischief carried out in rogue agencies over many years. It has to start somewhere. I nominate Samantha Power as a first test case. She was in charge of USAID for nearly four years — until Jan 20, 2025 — including the duration of the Ukraine War. She was also personally very busy hands-on in arranging attempted color revolutions in Hungary (failed, against Viktor Orban), Georgia (failed), Mexico (failed), and Brazil (succeeded against Jair Bolsonaro). Ms. Power provided money from USAID-connected NGOs to foster instability in many more countries, including our country. It must have come as quite a shock to her that Kamala Harris did not win the 2024 election. USAID will not be paying for Ms.Power’s legal representation.

Much more will come to shock the blobsters and their legions — though just now, as the reformation of government begins, it’s comforting just to think of all those dedicated seditionists, Wokesters, Marxians, and Jacobins unable to make their rent payments or buy groceries all of a sudden. The paychecks have stopped coming for thousands who wanted to turn American life upside-down and inside-out. This happened most colorfully at the fake-news outfit called Politico this week. Turned out they were a subsidiary of the blob. Who knew? (Everyone who was paying attention to the jive they published.) Management had to send out a memo that reporters and editors would not get paid this week, or maybe ever again. Boo hoo.

It was also revealed this week that the Reuters News Agency, the Associated Press, The New York Times, the Wash-Po, and around 700-other news outfits altogether had been receiving financial support from USAID, the CIA, and other government entities. Now do you understand why the Democratic Party voters are so obdurately deluded and deranged?

Besides the perfunctory lawsuits filed against DOGE and the agency chiefs, the response to all this corrective action has been surprisingly feeble. You might conclude that they couldn’t marshal the rioters this time because the money for rioters has been cut off. Instead, you saw a motley pack of political creeps — Jamie Raskin, Ayanna Pressley, Liz Warren, Chuck Schumer, Maxine Waters, Jasmine Crockett , Ilhan Omar —crying crocodile tears outside USAID HQ at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave. They looked like roaches after the exterminator’s visit.

The reform of our gone-rogue government is barely underway, notwithstanding these mighty initial actions. Yet to come, you have the whole filthy underbelly of the public health agencies who brought you Covid-19. The terrified Democrats are holding back confirmation of Patel, Gabbard, and RFKJr, but even if they fail to get confirmed, the new administration will put capable figures in those jobs at FBI, ODNI, and HHS. The party of Chaos must know that they cannot stop the dismantling of their evil machine.

Beyond these grifts lies the Okefenokee of treason, bribery, conspiracy, and sedition deriving from RussiaGate, the impeachment of 2019(, and all the shenanigans emanating out of Ukraine since the Maidan Revolution in 2014. Turns out, it was all of a piece. The same cast of characters were involved in all these nefarious events. I believe we’ll see those “Joe Biden” preemptive pardons tested in the SCOTUS. You haven’t begun to hear about the cases that AG Bondi will have to consider in that giant hairball. It’s only her second day on the job. Have mercy.

How could the new Trump administration affect the rest of the world?

Consider specific policy issues directly raised by the new Trump administration:

• If the United States scales down its role in NATO, or exits altogether, how long can the stability Western Europe has experienced since World War II last? Will Germany rearm and develop nuclear weapons? Will historic European animosities reemerge?

• If the United States commitment to East Asian alliances starts to wobble, will Japan rearm and nuclearize? Would South Korea similarly go nuclear? And how would China react?

• If the United States, the world’s largest economy, abandons any interest in climate action, how much will other countries follow suit? What will the consequences be for warming around the planet?

• If the United States begins imposing significant tariffs on other countries, other countries will assuredly retaliate. Yet a baseline level of free trade has been essential to global prosperity — being a key reason why the 2008 financial crisis did not end up looking like the Great Depression. Will escalating trade war set the stage for global calamity?

Maybe you should have reserved your criticism for serious issues instead of being the party of Men in Women's Sports and Bathrooms, or Wide Open Borders and Everyone Except for Citizens Gets a Free Ride, or Hire Anybody As Long as They're Not White Males, or Lets Give Billions in Reparations For Shit That Happened Centuries Ago.

Maybe you Second, SPECIFICALLY, shouldn't have been posting a dozen articles screaming about one thing or another every fucking day and never sticking to a single gripe you had for more than 2 hours before you moved on to the next gripe.

Nobody cares.

And soon Vox will be bankrupt without that USAID money, so you will no longer even have their idiocy put to print anymore.

I am sorry that I am biased against your beliefs. I have never met you. How dare I have uninformed opinions about you? On the other hand, every Trumptard I know should be in a straitjacket. Their behavior is that crazy. (Specifically: the ways they handle financial problems, health problems, work problems, family problems, even lawn care, are absolutely crazy. Correction - I meant stupid. The crazy part is they never learn a better way.) I've probably let that color my understanding of your mental problems. Again, I apologize for treating you as if you are a hallucinating lunatic.

This evening I photographed the Trumptard's car parked across the street and sent the pictures to the family. The passenger side of the windshield was smashed in. The hood crushed. The front bumper plastic cover was half detached on that side. The right side mirror was folded back. But there wasn't any blood, so just another stupid thing a Trumptard will shrug off as if nothing consequential happen, exactly like they shrug at every dumb-ass thing Trump does. What's the big deal? I don't see a problem with Trump.
