So here's the thing there is this area, the Suez, the Red Sea, Egypt, the Indian Ocean, Sudan, Somali, Isreal, Saudi, that links Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia

the Suez lets say but also in the region Greece, Egypt, from Greek regions you link to Europe Italy, Bulgaria to the north the Blacksea Ukraine the EU, from Egypt you reach North Africa across the Mediterranean Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, India, other trade routes to Asia...having ships go through this area saves people cutting through jungles or sailing all around other parts of the world or the Bottom of Africa like the Europeans did as they entered ages of exploration and colonization while at war with the Ottoman Empire...all about trade routes.

So you would think the ones who have most to benefit from this in the region Egypt, Israel would be out there sending their own ships to fight the terrorists but they don't they are involved in their own internal politics

and others kept the waters open

the USA became the World's 'Police Force' after WW2 and especially after the end of the Cold War

and Putin? nobody really trusts those Russians anymore

also the Russian Navy was kind of always pathetic, they have a 'Navy' that is 'On Paper' but it is not respected for a reason
Russia they have a Pacific Fleet wiped out by Japanese, you can include Fokino, Primorsky Krai south of Vladivostok near Japan as part of this,
they have Northern Fleet (NF) Severomorsk this Cold fleet near the North Pole worries about Vikings, Norway and Polar bears, maybe include the Baltic Fleet (BF) - Kaliningrad as part of this
to its South region you have Water which is surrounded by Sand, Arabic types, Turkics the Caspian Flotilla (CF) new boats but also lots of Soviet Union they can maybe shoot missiles at Ukraine but they are stuck on land like a boat stuck on a lake, maybe they worry about Persians to the South or Afghanistan?...this fleet goes nowhere
the final big Russian fleet is Astrakhan, Black Sea Fleet (BSF) - Sevastopol...this has mostly been destroyed by the Ukrainians
None of Russia's Navy could ever arrive on time to help the other guys, its Navy is in an even worse condition today

don't always agree with Friedman he could be a sneaky guy with his own agenda a shifty creep

but his 'Pencil' thing was a good vid

The Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, The Horn of Africa, the Arabian Sea...and Yemen

so who else can step up? the British Royal Navy, the Japanese they tend to only focus on local politics and most of their trade is with the USA and China so they can find other routes to the Middle East but in theory they could 'step up' and they have got more militarized since Putin's aggression, India those Hindu Nationalists have a big Navy but they don't use it to protect their trade around the Indian Ocean and drones or missiles from Yemen have hit the Indian Ocean, Sweden surprisingly has a big Navy for its small size but there is nothing that really matches the USA

maybe the UN in theory could 'fight pirates' but for now the USA remains the world's Police Force

He makes it sound like we all wind up happier and wealthier than before thru the magic of division of labor and free trade?

If free trade was such a great idea, why are so many people poorer than ever.

AFA the article... there isnt enough hypocrisy in the world to cover up the article's stench.

Actual, foreign aid only exists as a cover for neocolonialism and regime change ops.

Free trade? Allows exploitation of weaker nations by stronger ones.

Immigration? All the benefits of cheap foreign labor without leaving the comfort of home.

The only beneficiaries of globalism are transnationals and human traffickers

The nations that are doing the best FOR THEIR CITIZENS are those with less corrupted governments that adhere to nationalist policies.
