Juan "Random Guy" Guaido failed.

So now we call Maduro a "narco terrorist". I think we'll try a decapitation strike and try to foment a(nother) coup.

I read somewhere that one of Trump's big supporters owns a bunch of refineries that were specially constructed to deal with Venezuelan crude, which is thick, heavy, and high sulfur, i.e. equipped with hydrotreaters and hydro crackers and sulfur recovery units. For the life of me, I can't find his name again.

So rather than buy oil from Venezuela Trump is going to try and grab it.

Trump reminds me of a man frantically digging thru sofa cushions and pockets for ... anything! I sometimes suspect that, unlike our Congressional fat cats and bureaucrats, Trump has actually gone thru bankruptcy and knows how painful it is. So he's more aware how deep the shit is that we're in.

Maduro Secretly Offered US Vast Resources To Avoid War, But Nobel Winner Maria Machado Vows To Go Bigger

Friday, Oct 10, 2025 - 09:00 AM

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has condemned Washington placing Caracas in its crosshairs for a newly resurrected 'war on drugs' - which Maduro has said is really all about pursuing regime change.

At a moment of the Pentagon's largest build-up of forces ever off Venezuela's coast, Maduro is calling for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to convene, in order to condemn these "mounting threats" from the United States. This has resulted in diplomats indicating that a meeting is indeed set to take place Friday afternoon in New York.

Venezuela's foreign ministry has said that the US military build-up, and recent strikes against at least four alleged drug-smuggling boats, endangers "peace, security and international and regional stability."

Maduro wants the security council to hold a formal debate on the crisis and "make recommendations to curb any plans of aggression" on Washington's part.

So far, there have been at least 21 deaths reported from the US military intervention in the southern Caribbean, and interestingly Colombia has said at least one of the boats was operated by its own traffickers.

The UN council is likely to pay special attention to the fact that President Trump informed Congress last week in a letter that the US is currently in "armed conflict" with the drug cartels.

The Trump administration has said that in reality Maduro is the de facto leader of these cartels, and so he's not the legitimate leader of resource-rich Venezuela. On this point, the NY Times is out with the following bombshell on Friday:

Venezuelan officials, hoping to end their country’s clash with the United States, offered the Trump administration a dominant stake in Venezuela’s oil and other mineral wealth in discussions that lasted for months, according to multiple people close to the talks.

The far-reaching offer remained on the table as the Trump administration called the government of President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela a “narco-terror cartel,” amassed warships in the Caribbean and began blowing up boats that American officials say were carrying drugs from Venezuela.

Under a deal discussed between a senior U.S. official and Mr. Maduro’s top aides, the Venezuelan strongman offered to open up all existing and future oil and gold projects to American companies, give preferential contracts to American businesses, reverse the flow of Venezuelan oil exports from China to the United States, and slash his country’s energy and mining contracts with Chinese, Iranian and Russian firms.

However, the report says that President Trump still rebuffed this offer. The consensus is that Secretary of State Marco Rubio's hard anti-Maduro line has prevailed, also in favor of oppositive activist and leader María Corina Machado, who was just awarded the Nobel Peace Price on Friday. The Nobel was awarded, supposedly, as she has kept "the flame of democracy burning".

My (not well researched) opinions and conjectures:

Venezuela has the largest known reserves of oil in the WORLD. It is tarry, high sulfur oil that takes a lot of refining to deal with, using hydrogen to remove sulfur as H2S (which is recovered as solid sulfur by "sulfur recovery units") and to break apart the bigger molecules to turn them into something useful. BUT, it is also the source of heavier fractions like diesel and jet fuel, which our trucks, trains, ships, and planes run on.

Our Permian oil, they say, is at peak production, and can only go down, even with intensive fracking. A good reason to conserve, IMHO. In addition, most USA oil is too light, the molecules are too small to produce enough diesel, which is why many refineries like to blend our oil with heavier oil to get the right mix of products.

Venezuela has been under INTENSIVE sanctions for about three decades, ever since Hugo Chavez nationalized oil, leading to a drop in living standards for the elites.

While Chavez was alive, he used oil receipts to "help the poor" with medical care, education, and so forth, and broke up the large land holdings so poor people could run their own farms, ANOTHER reason for the elites to hate him. But bc he was a paratrooper, he had the loyalty of the army, and withstood regime change operations. ("The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" documentary)

Maduro, a former bus driver, OTOH, doesn't appear to have the military's backing. Some say he buys their loyalty by allowing their skimming at ports and off border smuggling, so forth. In addition, despite its vast resources, Maduro hasn't been able to get the Venezuelan economy on its feet. It still imports food and so forth.

The video of a couple of boats that were blown out of the water... those were speedboats, not fishing vessels. I wouldn't be surprised if they WERE smuggling drugs. Still, just blowing them out if the water like that is vastly illegal. The horrible things we excused under the "War on Terror" banner (a stupid concept if there ever was one. You can fight a war on terrorists, but not a war on terror) are coming back to haunt us.

I don't see Maduro as a drug kingpin. I think he's passively letting drug smuggling go on bc the police and military upper ups are corrupt.
