Thanks Brenda.

Yeah... Those were part of my buddy's old bathroom too. They went with pretty much everything I've added or will be adding in the bathroom except for the over the toilet cabinet.

I tried washing them last night, and they looked alright, but it appears in the light that the shade that used to be in the center needs to be taken back down and I'll have to use something stronger to clean it.

Earlier on I mentioned that somebody must have left a candle burning on top of the medicine cabinet and it was burning the wood right underneath those lights. The medicine cabinet was easy to fix with about 1/3rd of a small tub of wood filler, but those lampshades didn't appear to clean up well at all with just Dawn dish soap.

I'm hoping they can be cleaned off proper. The two aren't bad, but the one I've got on the right isn't pretty. I'm hoping that the medicine cabinet kind of hides the backs of the shades and maybe it won't be a problem. But if not, I will have to do something about trying to clean it off better. I don't see any way to rotate them where you wouldn't notice it especially on the one side of the shade.

Otherwise, it worked out great.

Unfortunately, because of the heat, I didn't get much sleep at all since I did all that work. Taking the day off today.

Right now, I'm just hoping the power stays on. Almost the middle of June and we're still having wild thunderstorms.

Yeah... I might be losing power here soon, so if I'm gone you know where I went.

It's bad out there. It was 67 degrees 10 minutes ago, now it's back up to 88. The thunder is making my house vibrate.

Yeah, those lamp shades may have a lot of dust on them and that will take something stronger to get it off.

Yeah... Something is on it. It's beyond dust though.

It just occoured to me that they might actually be burnt. :(

I don't actually know if that's a thing that can happen to glass or not, but I think it would be more likely on these than most types of glass because they have some sort of "frosting" on them.

In my head, I've been imagining that these things were up above the medicine cabinet when it was burning, but if that fire got big enough, maybe it was actually cooking the edge of the one side of one shade and it wasn't just soot that's baked in on it.

I'll be looking into it for sure. I didn't notice it at first when the lights were turned on in the dark, but I saw it when my nightlight was plugged back in and they were turned off last night. I was hoping it wouldn't look bad in the daylight, but it does. I'm sure there's got to be some sort of solvant I can let these sit in overnight that should take it all off.

Pretty sure my main work computer is broken. I went out to my friends tonight and it's obvious the power did go out at some point. When I got home it was on some sort of error screen and I've restored an old point and it still doesn't work. I'm running diagnostics on it now.

I am really, really glad that I literally just wrapped up the end of my project just a few days ago. This would have been a major setback had it happened last week instead of last night.

I haven't tested externals or anything yet since I'll be doing that on another computer, but neither of them sounded like they were acting funny when they were powered on, so everything should still be where i need it to be. From the looks of it, worst case thing would be having to install a new hard drive, and I just happened to come into 4 of them that I didn't realize were wasting away before the dehoard.

Still a pain in the ass, but not the end of the world.

Yeah... boy. Best case now is that a refresh works. I'd probably be better off with a clone of an image I made with a lot of programs set up, but that was a pretty ancient clone at this point.

I'm going to look at this like a good thing though. Now that I've got my project done, I can do a total refresh of an install on this computer and start from scratch.

It's going to be pretty annoying at first, but I know exactly where everything I would want to reinstall is now, and I'm sure a lot of the things I had on there I don't need anymore, or wouldn't for a long time, so I can focus on a lean build and make a new backup image when I'm done.

Hopefully the drive isn't bad. Won't know that for a little while.

Really fortuitous timing though. Instead of being a little tragedy, it's just a minor annoyance.

Famous last words.... Don't ever say something isn't going to be a problem.

First, I will say that I'm EXTREMELY impressed with how far Windows has come along in the ease of starting fresh. I've never had to do it this deep before since it usually is able to fix itself if it had a problem, but not only did it come back up with all my security and privacy settings just as they were among other cool things I wasn't expecting, but all of my portable programs were exactly where they were on the 2nd partition and loaded straight away without any issue either.

But... the bad news...

For the life of me, I could not find any backups of my passwords. I know I had one somewhere. Multiple backups. Couldn't find a single one and I'm wondering if I accidentally purged them when I was doing all the mass dehoarding....

And my backup email where I could send a code to get my life back, well, I couldn't even remember the email address let alone the password. The last time I had to do any of this stuff was like 5 years ago.

Then it hit me... I know a lot of this stuff has been typed out on various documents and just never organized properly before. So I did a search for all of my text files on the drive I knew it had to be on if it was anywhere. I dumped all of them, several hundred, into Notepad++, then I did a search for gmail and I found it.

4 hours. 4 agonizing hours, thinking about everything I would have to do to get access back to everything if I couldn't get back into my email.

All that freakin' backing up I did, and I didn't think to back up the most important thing of all.

What a fuckin' dummy.

Well... Hard part is finished, and crisis is averted.

Thank you very much, Jack from 5 years ago for all of your forward thinking, even if you weren't the most organized person who ever lived.

I thought I was well and truly buggered.

My old man is in some shit though. Just found out his power went out last night and they're saying they're not even sure if it will be back on by Saturday!!!!

Oh my god, I'd lose my mind. Even with my generator saving my insulin and keeping the house from flooding, I'd be bored out of my skull, especially when the sun went down.

I go crazy when the power is out for 3 or 4 hours.

I hope they're just being stupid conservative and he gets his power on sooner than later. At least there's no water coming in the sump well. If they need any help I'll be out there for them, but otherwise, I think I'll stay here in the A/C where I have things to do. I invited him over here, but he's not going to bail on the ship until the power comes back on. I wouldn't either.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I think they hid the passwords in someplace obscure.
On ours it's in the web browser.

I love those shades too. Decorative, classy, not ornate and not stark either. I can see them going with everything from Shaker to Art Deco to modern. Honestly, if I could find something like that I'd be happy!

FWIW it's not possible to burn glass. It does melt at about 1500°F. When they "frost“ it they usually use a form of fluoric acid to dissolve a thin top layer, so it's not anything they put on top of the glass.

Anyway, I don't think there's anything permanent on the glass. Maybe KrudKutter will do the trick?

I had an oncology follow-up today. All is good. I have one more oncology follow up at the end of the year, and that will be my 5-year anniversary since diagnosis.

Yeah... They're in the web browser. They're in AppData in a json file along with a database key you need to copy to the new browser if you didn't make a specific .CSV password backup file. All of your bookmarks are there too.

I just didn't think to remove the hard drive and get that data off of it before I refreshed windows and all that was gone. I had backups of everything, but those were from 2023, and the passwords were not good. But I had the actual info I needed typed out in various locations. I guess I just needed 4 hours to remember what it was I needed to do.

Yeah... Those shades are thick and heavy too. I really like it.

I don't have any Krud Kutter but I'll get some if it might work. What about Easy Off? I do have some Easy Off back from when I cleaned out about 3 lbs of burnt crap in my oven.

What a mess...

I'd celebrate the fact my power is somehow still on, but a butterfly can fart around these parts and my power will go down, so just prayin' that it stays on at least the next few days to keep that pump running.

I noticed 3 hours ago that the street had entirely flooded, so being Block Daddy, I went out with my rake to clear them out...

No dice. City sewer is down again for some reason. 3rd time since I've lived here.

I know we just got slammed with a ton of rain quickly, but it really wasn't that much rain to be looking at water up past my maple tree for only the 2nd time since I've lived here. If my power was out, this would have been a nightmare already.

Thankfully the rain has officially stopped now. We shouldn't have any for days at least. If we got about 1 more inch of water I'd have to turn off the sump pump again until the city sewers started draining and just cross my fingers.

My dad is still without power for more than 24 hours now. This morning at 7AM, ComEd had 197,000+ outages. They only fixed 61,000 by the time this next batch of storms came around tonight. I just checked, and now they're back over 190,000 outages again. My poor dad. He's going to be up all night with his mess. Even if I wanted to go help him now, I can't go anywhere. If I even went to the end of my driveway right now I would drown my little car.

:(

Finally just talked to him. He is going to be up all night and he's hoping he's got it in him to do it. I thought it was way worse than it was by the way he was explaining it though because he was calm and we talked for 6 minutes and he wasn't working while we were talking or rushing off the phone to go back to it. He just doesn't know how he's going to stay up to do it.

It infuriates me that I have two younger brothers who both live within 10 minutes of him and nobody is over there helping him out. My street is completely screwed and I'm stuck here.

I saw there are just as many outages now in his area as there were this morning, so I doubt he's going to get his power back on by Saturday now. I let him know once he knows the basement isn't going to flood that he can bunk with me for a few nights until the power comes back on and we can watch some movies or something.

Bathroom wouldn't be done, but he could see how the sausage is made.
