Hi!

Thought I let you all know that you can now "buy" star bonds for Nathan Fillion at the Hollywood Movie Exchange (HSX).

and for all those, who don't know HSX:
The Hollywood Movie Exchange is a place, where people can trade stocks and bonds for their favorite films and actors. The HSX is said to have quite some impact on the attention, a film gets (even by his distributors), since even Hollywood seems to watch these stocks go up and down.
The advantage over "normal" stocks?? At HSX no real money is needed. As soon as you create a new account you will get 2.000.000 HSX$ and you can immediately get started and buy into your favorite film or into films you think might be successful or films you want to push.

So, if you haven't done so already, give Firefly, Nathan or Alan Tudyk a boost and buy your share of stocks (to a maximum of 50.000 per film) and while your at it, please mention my name (Nevakee) at your registration, so I get more H$ to spend on more good films ;)

Hey Nevakee! Glad to see you found the other thread. I've been having a lot of fun on HSX over the past year. It's been slow going (thanks to bad investing on my part early on

) but I've finally got a decent portfolio built up.

*editted to add: Oh, and ReeQueen, I really liked your post over on the Chimera thread and I've been meaning to write up a response. You gave me a lot of good things to think about and I've re-evaluated my initial knee-jerk reaction.

Back on topic (because I'll blush if I don't distract myself) - my username on HSX is ReeQueen, iffen anybody wants to add me to their league. Several of us over at the prospero board have done that, and I've got my hubbert and OldestSon playing as well. Kinda fun, to measure ourselves against others with similar investment interests.

I'm doing pretty well, considering I'm playing the actors and movies *I* think are worthwhile, rather than, well, strategically worthwhile. I've got some HHGTTG, of course, but also Neuromancer (in development) and Logan's Run (in development), which of course are dirt cheap. Ooh, also Jennifer Government, which I'm (quite frankly) going to take a drubbing on for some time, I can tell, but it'll be a (hopefully) cool movie when it gets made.

Alan Tudyk has been mostly up this week, and of course the Nathan Fillion IPO has done marvellously for me.

I've also got Universal, Sci-Fi, and the Ultimate Comic Fund funds....covering the basics.

I don't even remember anymore, it's been ages since I played. Probably long enough for my teeming natives to have been indentured to some other country. I was a bad, bad, leader.

Well, only in that I deserted the game once I'd grown bored. There wasn't enough "choice," it was too random, if I recall my original objections.

I switched my strategy this year to focus more on star bonds. Last year I made a killing on the options (blockbuster warrents, holiday warrents and academy award nominations - great return on investment. The options for academy award winners, not so much

) as well as getting in pretty early on the Meet the Fokkers phenomenon.

My goal is to build up enough of a nest egg to play the openers. I've been able to do that up to this point but, with the summer blockbusters coming, I don't have enough of a portfolio to max out on every opener (add to that the fact that I have yet to estimate all the openers correctly).

I spend some time on the weekends over at www.hsbr.net in their bond charts looking for good bargains. Some of the best steals are actors who are in two movies at once. JKENN is a good example. He just adjusted down for MASK2 today and will adjust way up on April 5th for RBOTS (I should make 400k profit with a 2.1 roi on him).

I also check the box office for Friday openers on Saturday and figure out which movies had drastically different performances from what were expected, check what this does to the actor's star bonds in the movies, and invest accordingly.

So last year was options. This year is star bonds. Next year is movie stocks. I'm a very conservative investor.

Can you tell I might be enjoying this a little too much?

I'm learning as I go, right now I'm just going with the stuff I like, which seems to do okay. But the movie stocks are proving much riskier than anticipated. I like the concept and development ones, 'cause they're cheap and once I've made a nice profit I can sell off half and get something else. (At least, if I remember to do so and don't end up taking a drubbing because of timing.)

I figure star bonds are more stable, although some of them are waaaay overpriced. I may work on a strategy later on, as I learn more, but right now it's just fun playing with the non-existent monies.

But here's a question: I don't understand the option thing at all, and the terms/faqs aren't very helpful. WTF? Thanx....

There's different types. The main things to look for in options is when they cash out and what they will cash out at. They're realy good shorter term investments and, with a max of 10k shares, reasonably affordable.

I stay away from the TV options (right now they're running American Idol ones but they've also done them for Survivor) mainly because I'm not watching the show.

Sometimes I'll play the movie opener options. These start trading about a week and a half before a movie opens and cash out after the opening weekend so they're a real short term investment. They come in two varieties - call and put. The thing to pay attention to is the strike price (this is the amount HSX thinks the movie will make in the opening weekend). If you buy the call option, you're betting that the movie makes more than the strike price plus the option price over the opening weekend. For example, the "Miss Congeniality 2 $15 call" is trading at $4.99 right now. So if you bought this stock you're hoping the movie makes more than 19.99 million opening weekend. If the movie makes 25 million you make 5.01 profit per share. If the movie makes between 15 and 19.99 million you'll get some of your money back. If the movie makes less than 15 million you lose everything. The put option is the reverse, you're betting that the movie will not do as well as HSX thinks (the mechanics of the put option are similar to shorting a stock). For the same movie, the put is at 1.87 right now. So if the movie makes 13.13 million or less you make a profit, between 13.13 and 15 and you get some money back, over 15 and you lose everything. Every so often these options are really good money makers (Diary of a Mad Black Woman did crazy unexpected opening weekend business and the call option probably had a great return on investment). I don't usually play these unless I think the strike price is way off and also because I don't spend enough time investigating the openers (I prefer to do more long term stuff that I can just buy and leave alone for a while).

The funner options, for me at least, are the blockbuster warrants. These come out twice a year and the summer ones should be starting soon (it's a good idea to check the options page every so often). HSX will pick fifteen or so movies and decide how much they will make. Last year they had a Garfield $70 warrant, so they expected Garfield to make 70 million. I don't remember how much they start selling for but you calculate profit the same way you do with call options - you hope the movie makes more than the strike price plus what you paid for it. Most of the time, their predictions are overestimates and the warrants cash out at zero (which is great if you saw the price getting too high and shorted before the movie opened and everyone sold their shares). However, every so often a movie will vastly exceed expectations. I think I made close to 2 million profit on Shrek 2. The thing to pay attention to is the date that all the warrants cash out and make sure the movie has enough time to make the amount you think it will.

I have no idea if this is the type of explanation you were looking for

No, that's great - you've explained it very clearly, and I think I've got a better picture now. Good timing, too, since Sin City options are about to go on sale.

I've got my investments spread over a wide range of movie stocks and star bonds, plus six funds. Gradually milking some of the profit and reinvesting in more of each. Spreading the risk while I'm still a (very) minor player....but I do want to gamble a bit on movies I think will do extremely well and surprise folks (Sin City, for example).

I'm also hoping for big things from Sin City (although I'm down a quarter million so far

). I've been a big fan of Robert Rodriguez for a while. I think he has a lot in common with Joss in that he can do a really good job writing well-rounded non-traditional leading characters - although all of the writing on Sin City is by Frank Miller. Another thing I like is that the man can do amazing things on a limited budget (he made El Mariachi for $7000). However, I didn't like his last movie, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, as much as some of his other work.

I liked OUATIM, if only for the Johnny Depp-ness. I'm weak that way. ;-D I'm a big Rodriguez and Tarantino fan, so I'm really looking forward to Sin City. We almost have the entire Rodriguez catalogue on DVD, even all three SpyKids movies, although that bit is not my fault.

I don't quite have the HSX resources to risk a quarter mil. on anything, but I did max on the call option for SINCT. Plan to do the same thing for HHGTG, not to mention FRFLY.

I think this year is a great sci-fi/comic year, and will spend more time in the theater than I have any other year with the exception of the year Star Wars came out in New Zealand (1978, I think). I almost feel like movies are actually being marketed at *me*, rather than some segment of the viewing population that doesn't really exist....

Then, of course, there's Wonder Woman to look forward to.
