So, I'm sitting at my computer; got the tv on. Yes, I know, I just forgot to turn it off, whatever. And no, I wasn't watching it. The tv is basically a radio while I work when I forget to turn it off. So, the info presented below is just what I caught while working.

Now about 3:45pm today a "breaking news story" strikes the tv. A plane slid off the runway; tragic.

Yes, this is news. Yes, I expect this to be on the evening news. Yes, I except the possibility that this will interupt programming for a limited time. But this is ridiculous.

Here's the timeline. It starts at 20 min on air b/c I thought it was just going to be a 5 min, "this happened" type thing. Then it kept going, I I thought I'd just point out how ridiculous this actually is.

on tv for 20 min
Crash happened 1 hr ago still know nothing.

on tv for 35 min
Getting footage of previous crash ~1978.

on tv for 38 min
picture of the A340 Airbus, like the one that crashed, Oooooo.
A figure skater is being interviewed that saw the crash.

on tv 45 min
Heresay from some guy that most or all of people got out; info from stewardess in shock. Sure, reliable.

on tv 50 min
Waiting for news conference from authorities

on tv 55 min
Interview from some air transport association guy spewing air travel is safe stuff; he didn't know anything.

on tv 1 hr
We still know nothing
Interview passanger, he doesn't know anything.

Is this not just plain silly? Why do they have to interupt programming to say, Something happened, but we don't know what! Over and over and ...

I saw this stuff in the US when I lived there. But this is the first time that I've seen it happen here, on a Canadian channel.

What the hell is wrong with the so called "news agencies" now adays?

on tv for 1hr 5min
Getting into the weather conditions at the time.

on tv for 1hr 10min
Number of passangers given
Inverview w/ discovery channel aviation expert.

Click, off goes the tv. I'll get my info from the news when they know what the hell's going on. I've got work to do, without the tv as a further distraction anymore.

This is just sad.

I think they do this so that every person who knows anyone who was going to be flying today will be upset and freaked out....

Gets your attention easier that way. Then you'll pay attention to their sponsers.

Noone was killed if the info I read was correct. *whew*

I Agree with you completely, mind you I would take it just a few steps further...

news events such as the Toronto plane crash, should be covered in the local news, and as an update... but constant coverage should only be on those news channels that all the networks seem to have started the past few years ( CBC and CTV have them )

I would go the one step further and say Sports events should also be held on all the sports channels these networks have.....

why pre-empt anything when you have the same damn baseball game on six channels ???

That's pretty much the point of it all. They'll do just about anything to get your attention...

I'd honestly rather have my kids watching hardcore pornography than the evening news.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

I rarely rely on t.v. for much of anything. The POWERS THAT BE who control how news is released know that they can keep an audience by going LIVE! to some outside location, quickly cutting back to the studio or another LIVE! location,etc......It's basically them holding up a bright, shiny object to the easily distracted toddlers who are the viewing audience. At least, that's how they see us as... infant minded and totally reliant on what THEY tell us.

HERO

The footage of the smoking plane was really good. I gave it 30 seconds before tuning to something I had saved on the DVR.

@AURaptor:
Agreed.

@Hero:
That would've been my reaction as well if I was actually watching tv at the time.

I just realized after awhile that it was anoying me for ~20min. So, I decided to make a log of just how obsurd it really is. Most people don't realize such things until it's spelled out for them.

Not that'd it'd be very useful for the people here. But everyone has those freinds/family members that need to see this stuff and I thought it might be useful for that purpose.

That, and it's really starting to piss me off and I needed to vent a bit.

Oh, I talked to my dad, and apparently it was on for about 2 hrs!

*sigh*
