This is from last Friday, and comes a few days after a Gallup poll put Bush at 31%:

President Bush’s job-approval rating has fallen to its lowest mark of his presidency, according to a new Harris Interactive poll. Of 1,003 U.S. adults surveyed in a telephone poll, 29% think Mr. Bush is doing an “excellent or pretty good” job as president, down from 35% in April and significantly lower than 43% in January. Approval ratings for Congress overall also sank, and now stand at 18%.

Roughly one-quarter of U.S. adults say “things in the country are going in the right direction,” while 69% say “things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track.” This has been the trend since January, when 33% said the nation was heading in the right direction. Iraq remains a key concern for the general public, as 28% of Americans said they consider Iraq to be one of the top two most important issues the government should address, up from 23% in April. The immigration debate also prompted 16% of Americans to consider it a top issue, down from 19% last month, but still sharply higher from 4% in March.

The Harris poll comes two days after a downbeat assessement of Bush in a New York Times/CBS News poll. The Times, in analyzing the results, said “Americans have a bleaker view of the country’s direction than at any time in more than two decades.”

I never was all that impressed with President Bush. I heard that when he was in the oil business he wasn't great at it either. when Bush was campaigning for his second election, he didn't have things to say that were very important to me. Kerry, a flip-flopper though he may be, seemed to have more information on subjects that mattered(to me anyway).

Off topic, I see you are new to this site, perhaps a post in the General Discussions forum is in order. If not for any other reason than, a poster by the name of FollowMal will find you and hand you a virtual Browncoat. It's not an order, but they sure are fun!

Also, who doesn't wanna be Mr. Baccarin?

JOSSIS(Most Definitely)AGOD

I found the following piece to be sumwhat amusing:
Quote:

THE PRESIDENT: Listen, I think that God -- that my relationship with God is a very personal relationship.
It would seem that even though the president believes his relationship with God is a "very personal relationship" that did not stop him from trying to ban Abortion and Gay marriage! MY Muscular Buttocks it's personal! he has put God in nearly every public speech he has done! and justified banning subjects based on personal opinion rather than what is good for the individuals in his free country. I have NO problem with those who believe in God, I used to myself, however I believe that God has no place in politics(separation of Church and State!).

It seems that there are dark days ahead for Bush Co.
With his numbers in the toilet and now the word of the Rove indictment, I just don't think he can pull this one out. I only hope Bush dosen't pull another bone headed stunt to try and bolster his numbers. Iran?

No links page? Oh well, I guess I did get Firefly sites mixed up. The first night I did a Google search I went to several, but this was my favorite. I was only going to submit a link for a Morena Baccarin fansite.

As far as 29% goes, I don't think it's possible for Bush to fall any lower. At this level he's probably bottomed out to the hardcore base of the Republican Party and they won't abandon him. The good news is that 29% is more than low enough for big gains in the midterms for Democrats.

Hardcore businessmen and Christian Fundamentalists is more like it(not that there's anything wrong with being a Christian Fundamentalist). It seems to me that that's the crowd Bush is playing to now. It would seem to me that the majority of the Republican party does not approve of President Bush. well, them and ignorant individuals who are afraid that if they disagree with him they'll get into trouble.

That last statement might get me flamed, but I came prepared.

So, Bush's ratings are crappy. (Surprise, anyone?) I am so sad that i voted for him in the first gorram place. I was eighteen in 2000 and my ex had just told me "Vote for Bush. Al Gore's wife is gung ho on censorship and Gore wants to ban all guns" (obviously two things i am opposed to). In six years, i have become a good deal more informed since then. Hell, i was more informed in 2004 and voted for Kerry and yelled at the TV at National Coney Island after the bar on election (upsurp) day when we were informed that Bush would remain Dictator. I'm reaching the point where i just want to dig a hole in the woods and live there for the rest of my days. The more i hear, the less i like. That isn't exclusive to our president, mind you, but i do tend to yell and cuss a lot when i see him on TV. Sorry for ranting, i'm just sick of seeing gas prices skyrocket, wars on drugs that accomplish nothing except keep the poor poor, dreading the day i read that MY right to choose abortion or birth control has gone the way of the dodo, hearing about young men and women die by the thousands (how many are we at now? Christ, i don't want to know) in the Middle East on both sides for WHAT?????, watch American manufacturing, telemarketing, and tech support jobs get shipped to India or China, get my phone tapped and my online activities monitored, watch sex education get eliminated or made "abstinence only" in public schools, watch huge corporations take over this country, and grow old with no health insurance or social security. Now on this immigration thing. My grandmother came to America in 1954 aboard the Andrea Doria from Italy. I will never forget that. All of our parents, or grandparents, or great-grandparents or further back your line came from somewhere. How can we forget that? Unless you are Native American and that's a whole other can of worms. Okay, now i've ranted. See you all in 2008, i'm going to move to Canada till then.

Oh, i am a tweaked one, yes i am...

It is the fault of all of us that were/are anti Bush that he is still DICTATOR George. We did not get out enough and vote. We did not ensure that in the State elections that we elected people who would oust Bush.

The only way to solve this problem is for everyone (Not you Citizen or any of our European brethen - you can't vote here - sorry) to get off their collective Arses and VOTE. Vote the Republicans out of office. Put a Democrat in power that will ACTUALLY do the job and not play "keep them happy".

Otherwise, I will join you in your hole. Or hell, I might just move back to Europe, adopt an accent Francais and walk around saying "America? I spit in your general direction!"

NOT TRUE!! Exit polls showed that Kerry WON in Florida and Ohio. Dr. Freeman from the University of Pennsylvania’s ania’s Center for Organizational Dynamics analyzed the exit polling data for his Nov. 10 paper The Unexplained Exit Poll Discrepancy.

Quote:

“Exit polls showed [Kerry] ahead in nearly every battleground state, in many cases by sizable margins,” Freeman wrote. “But then in key state after key state, counts were showing very different numbers than the polls predicted; and the differentials were all in the same direction.”... Freeman charts the data, taken from the CNN web site, “before the data changed,” showing the predicted versus actual percentages in battleground states. “In 10 of the 11 consensus battleground states, the tallied margin differs from the predicted margin, and in every one, the shift favors Bush.”... For example, exit polls in Ohio indicated that Kerry would win by 4.2 points with 52.1 percent... In Pennsylvania Kerry was predicted to win by 8.7 points but won by only 2.2.... {and} in Florida exit polls indicated a very close race with Bush edging Kerry by one-tenth of a point... This also happened in the “battleground states” of Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Pennsylvania. Only in Wisconsin did the exit polls match the actual results.

Freeman’s statistical analysis for Ohio shows that Kerry’s tallied vote of 48.5 percent is an extremely unlikely result. “It turns out that the likelihood that [Kerry] received only 48.5 percent of the vote is less than one in 1,000 (.0008),” Freeman wrote.

The same analysis for Florida, where Kerry received only 47.1 percent, given that exit polls indicated 49.7 percent, is less than 3 in 1,000 (.0028), Freeman found. In Pennsylvania, the likelihood of the Kerry result having occurred is less than two in 1,000. Freeman says that the likelihood of any two of these statistical anomalies occurring together is on the order of one-in-a-million, but the odds of all three occurring together are 250 million to one

“As much as we can say in social science that something is impossible, it is impossible that the discrepancies between predicted and actual vote counts in the three critical battleground states of the 2004 election could have been due to chance or random error,” Freeman concluded. The unexplained discrepancy leaves two explanations, Freeman wrote. “The polls were flawed or the count is off. Given that neither the pollsters nor their media clients have provided a solid explanation to the public, suspicion of fraud, or among the less accusatory, ‘mistabulation,’ is running rampant and unchecked.

www.americanfreepress.net/html/tens_of_thousands.html

This outlook has since been signed by over two dozen statisticians and political experts, many of whom are renowned PhDs and experts in their fields.

What you REALLY need to do is pressure your Secretary of State NOT to allow unverifiable electronic voting. And then you and your buds need to go observe the vote counting.

I guess it's possible for Bush to fall a little further, but he probably won't since he's busy shoring up his base. He won't rise much either, but I think his goal is to get back to about 40% so he won't drag his party to far down in the mid terms.

To Dayve, Kinky Friedman is interesting, but he can't beat Perry. He can only siphon enough votes away from Chris Bell to reelect Perry. With Ms Strayhorn (a Republican running for Governor as an independent, for those outside of Texas) in the race there is a chance that Bell can defeat Perry, but not if Democrats vote for Kinky in large numbers. Independents always hurt the major party candidate they are closest to idea logically. Ralph Nader in the 2000 Presidential race is the best example of that.

Same here. I actually disliked him more than I usually do during that time for two reasons:
i) I knew people would rally behind him and his popularity would shoot up, which was an undeserved blessing for him;
ii) I guess I can understand why people would support their leader in such a time, but somehow, deep down, I just knew his administration would misuse that trust and goodwill - and it did.

One of the things that frustrates me so much about Bush is how far he has lowered the bar. Basically, anyone who can speak in complete sentences and reasonably address a question comes out looking like a superstar in comparison. I remember being at the march in San Francisco back in February 2003 (back when a lot of us thought that maybe, just maybe, hundreds of thousands of people saying, "Hold on, wait a second, let's not rush into Iraq." might actually temper the going-off-half-cocked nature of the administration) and listening to one of the speakers - a Member of Parliament - and thinking, "I sure wish my President could speak like that." It's a thought I've had often in listening to other politicians speak over the past many years.

Soupcatcher,
I wish you were right. In the US, logic, reason and/or passable English don't hold a candle to the emotionally resonant two (or three) word phrase. Hard work, dead or alive, smoke 'em out, flip flop, ownership society, fine job, mushroom cloud, etc etc Once it gets past a couple of semi-complete phrases in a row, people's eyes roll in their heads, eyelids close, heads nod. Thinking is hard work.

You are probably right about this, DallasFirefly... and while I think that Friedman would bring a fresh new approach to politics in this backward state, I am enough of a realist to know that it just won't happen. Unfortunately it seems that we are stuck with Gov. Gooodhair for a while longer. I would throw my complete support behind Bell if I thought he had any chance, but I just don't see it.

Rue- You caught that two-word tango really well. That's just about what most people respond to.

What I can't figure out- even after extensive ...er... discussion with Bush supporters on this board, is... who ARE those 29%?? I know they're not rich enough to really benefit from this Administration. Some are having flashbacks to the WMD scenario that they just can't seem to get over. PTSD. Some think that Bush is God's right-hand man. But others... they're not religious, they do not seem to be overly traumatized by 9-11, they SEEM to be running on at least 7 of 8 cylinders but they also seem to be willfully mentating in some kind of alternate reality. There's no global warming, the tax cut did not cause the deficit, Iraq is a success. I just can't seem to quite wrap my brain around it!

WTF? Blacks? Women? Homosexuals? Hispanics? Non-Christians?

Thats what I don't get.
