Why can't we be more like Mal?

He came aboard Serenity and shot Dobson as he began to give orders for departure.
He muttered 'Darn', and kicked the henchman into the engine, then preceeded to tell the next one of his intentions.
He shot the pilot(?) of the ship that killed Book as he was laying out his plan to survive Reaver space...

No 'Arnoldesque' puns at the dead men's expense. No wry smile. In short....
No satisfaction.

Mal clearly takes no pleasure in killing, or seeing others get killed.

Can we not all follow his fine example?

Edit: Warning. This is a joke. This is only a joke. In the case of an actual opinion, it would not be followed by the symbol, which in much of the cyber-world indicates a joke. If you do not understand the concept of a "joke", please seek professional help.

The joke begins immediately below.
------------------------------------
My God, man. He tortured and killed a wounded prisoner. This couldn't have happened unless he had orders from the very top. The leaders of the Independent government-in-exile should be forced to resign and tried for murder immediately.

"It's all about the Drugs! It's all about the Drugs! It's all about the Drugs!"

-----------------------------
The joke is now over. I repeat. The joke is now over. If this had been actual opinion it would not have contained a . Thank you for your cooperation.

Fair enough, I started it.

1) No torture, physical or otherwise, and Mal wasn't demanding anything of the dude except that he not prove himself to be a direct and imminent threat to Mal's crew.

2) He reluctantly ended that threat (w/no collateral damage).

Well, I'm that way, anyway. Or were you reffering to the whole of humanity?

I'm guessing he's talking about Dobson, but note that Mal explicitly told Jayne to just scare him.

Granted, turning someone over to Jayne in the first place is morally questionable, but still, Mal didn't want any blood shed if it could be avoided.

Geezer's implying tha Mal is as bad as those who torture prisoners at Gitmo or Abu-Gharib.
I do not hold with that.
And since Mal gives the orders, he's also implying that Mal is not unlike Cheney or Bush, which I think is ridiculous.

Now if Jayne had got himself that ear, then Geezer's comparison would hold some water, but there's still the notion that Mal knew Jayne well enough to feel comfortable that no real blood would be spilled.
There's also a difference between questioning someone who tried to kill ya, and a suspect, right?

So Mal is responsible for everything bad in the 'Verse? What, like he causes so much difficulty for the average Alliance citizen? He makes no decisions that do that, save the one to broadband the truth about Reavers, and we know that'll be spun by the best the Alliance has.
Mal is more like....Ralph Nader than Bush.
Well, you know what I mean...

Difference is, Mal makes his own decisions, and Bush finds out what his are from his 'advisors' and the peeps that have already done stuff in his name (I think they're called Generals or something).

Um.. cause he IS ?

And in the context of the verse as presented via Firefly/Serenity - that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Terrorism is a tactic, not a country, not a force of people, but merely a tactic - and folks who use it are, well, terrorists.

Hell, the Boston Tea Party was an act of terrorism, to be absolutely blunt about it.

Chasing your little sister with a large plastic spider to make her stay out of your room is 'terrorism' by the book, for cryin out loud.

That's why one finds this whole GWOT thing ludicrous, it's like declaring war on fog, just plain silly.

In effect, we're all terrorists.

So fekkin what.

Agreed Frem...

So, were we FOR Global Terror before 9/11?

Make a name, present it, and see who disagrees.
Who will? That is why it is pointless to announce this agenda and have the admin. poke their chests out.

Was it the National War on Terror after Okla. City. This was just as disturbing for me when this happened. (far less people died, I know) I didn't get a color coded terror alert after that though.

Why on earth would we want to be like Mal? The guy's a loser!

He has no sense of direction or focus ("the wind blows North, I go North")
He's too chicken to go after the girl he wants.
His income keeps dropping, despite being willing to do almost any job.
He gets over-sentimental about his passengers (keeping River and Simon on board) and over-harsh on those he doesn't know (throwing the guy to the Reavers)
He fought a war, lost and still hasn't gotten over it years later (say it with me: therapy)
He has one outfit and it's all patches and stitched up.
He also suffers from bed hair.

Though he takes no pleasure in it, he's also a little too kill happy for my liking (in a real world context I mean, in a sci-fi western context it makes perfect sense).
He shot the surrendering pilot of the ship that killed Book, a step too far in the real world.

Me an' Citizen got into a big duke-aroo over this point a while back, and again I must ask (whether they're on a moon in the future, or a desert in RL), what was Mal to do? Tie him up and leave him to die of de-hydration?
Couldn't take him along...no time to watch him, seein' as they needed to leave, PRONTO!
What- let Kaylee give him a two minute lecture on his poor choice of allegiance and hope he switches sides?

How about tying him up, and leaving him for his Alliance cronies to find after he doesn't return to base. Then he can try to explain how he got shot down by a man of the cloth while he is sliding down the Operatives sword.

Maybe my sarcasm meter is a might off, but wth?

He has no sense of direction or focus - Maybe. But out on the rim, that isn't always a necessity.

He's too chicken to go after the girl he wants. - Inara hasn't been very proactive in that area either.

His income keeps dropping, despite being willing to do almost any job. - The Alliance makes it harder to get decent, well-paying jobs, which means he has to make decisions that keep him from earning a steady income.

He gets over-sentimental about his passengers (keeping River and Simon on board) and over-harsh on those he doesn't know (throwing the guy to the Reavers) - Maybe he was too harsh on that man, but Mal's main priority is to look after his own first. And keeping River and Simon on board is a little thing called compassion. It's a sign you're still human.

He fought a war, lost and still hasn't gotten over it years later (say it with me: therapy) - I'll agree, he could use a few sessions with a shrink, but a war that spans the entire universe has a tendency to stay with a person.

He has one outfit and it's all patches and stitched up. - See comment about income.

He also suffers from bed hair. - Mal's bed hair is cute, thank you very much.

If Mal's a loser, then paste an "L" on my forehead, cause I'm one too.
