I swear this guy deserved a nobel.

He made a product that was both effective and inexpensive, putting food into the hands of hundreds, even thousands of people otherwise unable to afford food.

A product requiring neither additional materials nor skill, elegant in it's simplicity, and supremely effective in it's use.

Not all heros are forged on the battlefield, and this one was forged in the crucible of hunger and culinary excellence.

Momofuku Ando, I salute you.
May you find happiness in the afterlife of your beliefs.

Instant noodle inventor dies
January 7, 2007

Momofuku Ando, the founder-chairman of Nissin Food Products Co, who was widely known as the inventor of instant noodles, has died of heart failure at a hospital in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, his family said. He was 96.

Born on March 5, 1910 in Taiwan, Ando initially ran clothing companies in Taipei and Osaka while he was a student at Ritsumeikan University.

In 1948, he founded the precursor of Nissin, before introducing Chicken Ramen, the world's first instant noodle product, in 1958.

Ando was inspired to develop the instant noodle after coming upon a long line of people on a cold night shortly after World War II waiting to buy freshly made ramen at a black market food stall, according to Nissin. The experience convinced him that "Peace will come to the world when the people have enough to eat," it said.

In 1971, Nissin introduced the Cup Noodle, instant noodles in a waterproof styrofoam container that could be used to cook the noodles, ahead of his competitors.

Dubbed the Ramen King, Ando is credited with expanding Nissin into the No.1 company in the industry and was well-known for his dedication to his job.

Kei Kizugawa, head of the Kamigata Geino journal, said Ando was a great food product inventor whose accomplishment equals that of Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and known in Japan as the Father of Consumer Electronics.

"I believe generation after generation will talk about Chicken Ramen. I don't think there will ever be an instant noodle product that beats the taste of Chicken Ramen," Kizugawa said.

Ando became a chairman after handing over the presidency in 1981 to his eldest son, but came to double as the president again two years later after having a conflict over the company's policy, including development of new products.

In 1999, Ando opened the Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum in Ikeda after posting his second son, Koki, as the president.

Ando retired from chairman's post in June 2005 to serve as founder-chairman.

In July 2005, Nissin introduced a vacuum packed instant noodle specially designed for Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi to eat during the US space shuttle Discovery's mission.

Showcasing his Space Ram noodles in front of reporters, Ando said: "I'm happy I've realised my dream that noodles can go into space."

I think (and I hope you don't mind) we should turn this thread into a who's who of unnamed notables who have died recently whose passings should have warranted a little more recognition. For my choice, I would suggest:

Iwao Takamoto (April 19, 1925 - January 8, 2007) was a Japanese American animator, television producer, and film director. He was most famous as being a production designer for Hanna-Barbera Productions and the artist/character designer for Scooby-Doo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iwao_Takamoto

Can you even BE an American without ever seeing Scooby-Doo? It's a pop-culture staple. It's almost a mark of passage to have conversations like "Was Shaggy a stoner," or "Does the scarf (ascot) make Fred gay?" or the perennial "Dude, Daphne is soooo much hotter than [insert other female cartoon character here]."

In that case lemme throw in some definate honorary mentions.

Nancy Green.
And all her spritual sisters like Rosie Lee Moore and Lillian Richard.

Of course, you wouldn't know her as Nancy Green, for most she still embodies an image of wholesome cheerful hospitality.

You'd know her as Aunt Jemima.
http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/scoop_article.asp?ai=1353&si=126

Some folk like to attribute racial connotations to said image, but in truth Ms. Green was a friendly, charitable and engaging soul, who's animated and friendly personality embodied the very spirit of hospitality, and while the pancake recipe in question did not originate with her, she sure cooked up a lot of em.

The very act of sharing food is a bonding between folk, a gesture of goodwill and trust that goes far beyond any issue of race, gender or creed, and hospitality is just about as universal a tenet of humanity as it gets - and with this embodiment, how could the darkness of racial hatred endure the brilliant sunshine of a cheerfully shared breakfast ?

I will always honor Ms. Green, not only for her contribution in assistance of a product that drastically simplifies breakfast, but also for becoming the very embodied spirit of cheerful hospitality, one of the few bright forces in this world that crosses all social barriers, and is unhindered and unassailable by it's darkness.

And for that, I salute you, Ms. Green, and all your spiritual sisters that came after.

I jest. I jest.

I was a major fan of the Ramen noodle, and pretty much subsisted on it throughout graduate school. But those were good times, and I suppose I owe them all to Mr. Ando.

And once you figure out not use the enclosed pack of MSG and death that comes with it, you can make some moderately nutritious meals.

Yep! Good tip!

I've always crumbled 'em (10 or 20 good whacks with the back of a soup spoon), and used to mix 'em in with Campbell's Chunky ('til I realized there was MSG in that, too!)... Mmmmmm! That was good eatin!

The man definitely died a hero!

I'm not sure if this was a real ???? on your part, or if you were being humorous. In the off chance it was a real ????, I'll respond.

Shaggy, due to his tremendous appetite and choice of vehicle, was often tied to stoner culture. His strange cravings and laid-back attitude became a topic of debate, and "scooby snacks" became slang for drugs. It caught the attention of the occasional watch group, but nothing serious. A google or wiki search of Shaggy and stoner would probably get a ton of hits.

As to Fred, one of the things I can remember being drunk and discussing in college was whether or not Fred was gay. He never seemed interested in the girls, and (at least in the original series) wore that ridiculous scarf (called an "ascot").

With folks the 35-45 age range, as am I, I would be stunned if none of them had ever had any of those Scooby-related discussions as I reference in my post.

No. Velma was gay.

Fred and Daphne were doing the nasty in the van.

Shaggy was burnt from a bad trip.

They were all wasted.

And Scooby was a hallucination.

Scrappy was Scooby’s hallucination.

Wow, from the passing of Momofuku Ando to a discussion about Scooby Doo in less than ten posts ... this board doesn't seem to be at the same level it was when I last checked in.

Khyron, this particular thread was about the death of the Ramen noodle guy. What exactly did you expect to find in here, "death of Gandhi"-like solemnity?

Heh, no. But I thought your idea of posting the deaths of minor contributors to society was pretty cool, and hence I did expect some more death notices and associated "death of some hitherto-anonymous-yet-still-significant-in-his-own-way guy"-solemnity.

My comment was meant more in jest anyway.

My apologies then. Oh, I'm sure someone will toddle in here sooner or later with another "should-be" important person. It's only a matter of time.

Jest or not, you’re right. It was tasteless for me to make such crude references in a thread designed to honor the death of a man. Although 7% is right that Mr. Ando was not a particularly well known person, and I don’t share Frem’s veneration with his accomplishments necessarily, he was by my understanding a good man who did well for himself and his family. My own digressions into childish innuendo was inappropriate.

Hit the mute button for a moment of silence: The co-inventor of the TV remote, Robert Adler, has died.

Adler, who won an Emmy Award along with fellow engineer Eugene Polley for the device that made the couch potato possible, died Thursday of heart failure at a Boise nursing home at 93, Zenith Electronics Corp. said Friday.
