To all Canadian browncoats, this American would like to say happy New Canada Day. Yes January 23 is "New Canada Day".

It was on this day one year ago that Canadian voters went to the polls and voted out those idiots that had been running Canada for over twelve years.

You voted out the party that had turned Canada into Soviet Canuckistan and voted in a common sense capitalist leader, the great Stephen Harper.

God bless Canada!

... and God bless Stephen Harper!

Well I'm pretty surprised myself considering how the country was supposed to go to hell in a hand basket if the 'scary' Conservatives ever took power (according to the Liberals ).

The Harper government had a clear mandate when they took power and have managed to follow that mandate while being a minority government. With the balance of power shifting slightly in the House of Commons, Perhaps the Conservatives can continue to get stuff done. I do not think Canadians want to go back to the polls again so soon.

Posting to stir stuff up.

Perhaps because Canada is a joke? Or maybe I'm just poking you folk in much the same way I make fun of my little sister like all good big brothers are supposed to do? Or maybe I have no sister and this is all a dream with butterflies and talking goldfish?

Could go either way...

I didn't vote for him. To assume that "Canadian Browncoats" would make such a ludicrous decision to vote for that moron is insulting. And in actuality, only aprox. 36% of Canadians voted for him.

For that matter, the only reason why the Conservatives won, is that people were pissed at the Liberals at the time and the Conservatives successfully convinced the people of Canada that a change was needed. The problem is that change is only good if the change is for the better. But, the perception was that someone else should be given a chance. Please note that the people didn't even look at what we'd be changing to. They just went with the other major party. Yes, Canadians can be stupid too.

But, let's go over his "successful" reign.

- He's failed to implement anything even close to actual accountability. At least not for his own party. This was an election promise.

- He's failed to implement anything even close to his election promise of 5% renewable fuel sources.

- He's failed to implement anything close to the environmental promises we made by signing onto Kyoto. And by what his "plan" is, he's effectively removed us from the protocol. Something most (approx 70% according to the wikipedia) Canadians want.

- He's failed to do anything remotely good for national child daycare. The Liberals had a decent plan, but there wasn't enough time to implement it. The Conservatives implemented plan is actually counter productive. It gives the most money to households earning > $100,000 where the least amount of money goes toward the people that actually need it (read: poor people). This money also comes in the form of a cheque. Problem with this is that for the most part, poor people don't know who to deal with money. So, wasted money.

- He's failed to engage the national (and local) media instituting an effective media blackout because journalists here won't put up with the bullshit of having to sign a list with the intended question asked. Yes, thats' right, our journalists actually have integrity. Similar things happen with requests to the PO.

- He's failed the public by not allowing his MP's to speak to journalists.

- He's failed the Canadian people by starting to push for a privatized health care system.

- He's failed to acknowledge the separation of church and state by starting to do this BS of "god bless Canada".

- He's failed Canada with the "resolution" of the softwood dispute by accepting a "solution" that effectively screwed us.

- He's failed the Canadian people by starting to try to get DMCA like law into Canada which basically removes fair use rights.

I could go on.

In fact, the only thing that they actually have done is to constantly criticize the Liberals. Not to mention that almost all of that criticism is pretty much sophistry. I imagine that they do this as a diversion tactic so people don't realize that they suck as a government. At least, not as much.

They are an embarrassment. To give us congrats for doing this to ourselves is insulting.

EDIT: I didn't get an email that someone responded to this. Anyone else having this problem?

To all American browncoats, this non-American would like to wish you a belated Happy New America Day! Yes, January 20 2001 was the day America turned into something it wasn't supposed to be, hence "New America Day".

The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.

I am a Canadian Browncoat who voted Conservative.

When the Liberals were caught funneling taxpayer money to the Quebec wing of their party, I think a change was definently needed.

The arrogance and condescension in that paragraph was astonishing. That, IMHO, was part of the reason the Liberals were runners up in the last election. The attitude that they always know what is best for the uninformed public.

It's a darn good start.

I believe the original plan was to have all gasoline contain 5% ethanol by 2010. I guess it takes time to grow all that corn.

What do you expect the Conservatives to do in one year that the Liberals could not do in the 3 years since Canada ratified Kyoto? While admitedly off to a rocky start on the environment, a new minister and refreshed ideas are looking promising.

Under the Liberals plan, childcare came between the hours of 9-5. Good if those are your working hours, not good if you work evenings.

I thought all parent's received the same amount regardless of income. The Conservatives position was to give the money to those who would know how best to spend it, the parents.
And, correct me if I am wrong, but are you saying that poor people can't be trusted with money?

MP's speak to journalists all the time. There should be some control from the PMO to help prevent embarrassing incidents like Carolyn Parrish.

Those kind of 'mistakes' can sour relations and impede amicable solutions to common problems.

In April 2006, The United States and Canada announced that they had reached a tentative settlement to end the current dispute. Under the preliminary terms, the United States would lift duties provided lumber prices continue to stay above a certain range. Below the specified range, a mixed export tax/quota regime would be implemented on imports of Canadian lumber. As a part of the deal, more than $5 billion in duty deposits collected would be returned.

But one must also protect copyright. It is a tricky situation to say the least.

I could go on.

You could and prove yourself less partisan, I'll get you started.
- Reduced the Goods and Services Tax.
- Mandatory minimum sentences for violent crimes.
- Strengthen border security.
- Officially recognize the Quebecois nation.
- Compensation for the Chinese head tax.
- More military spending to meet NATO objectives.
And some of the upcoming policies.
- Badly needed Senate reform.
- Reduce hospital wait times.
- Address the fiscal imbalance between the Federal and Provincial levels of government.
