I've been away so I'm dragging out some old threads

ShinyEd,
Did you ever wonder WHY I called you a douche bag? Do you mistakenly believe it's because you expressed an opinion? In case you ever did wonder, it's because you lie and hate women.

The first part:
Quote:

America markets abortion like vendors at the stadium ( 2nd largest advertiser in Yellow Pages ) Hey... Abortion ! Abortion ! Abortion !"
It's actually NOT the 2nd largest advertiser, or even the 20th. Automobile is much larger. And the ANTI-abortion section of the yellow pages over here - heathen Los Angeles - is slightly over 1/2 page, while the abortion section is a small less than 1/4 page.

The second part:
Quote:

No waiting...come on in today...baby-free tonite!
No guilt
No money
No boyfriend/husband...been foolin' 'round?
No scruples...you had good reasons to fuck
No morals...well you are over 8...
No clue who's the proud papa...we luv orgies' by-products
No idea when....we yank it whenever it was made
No age limit...40-90 our specialty...just one shot of our special clamato juice fixes ya right up
No age too low...we won't tell your mommy & daddy...dont worry
No self-esteem....hey now your'e popular I bet
No ability to say no...better to just let the boys get their way...why resist the fun?
No time limit...we got 8 months 30 days...ok!

WHAT exactly are you saying here? That you hate women? White, male, uneducated, misogynist ... you fit a profile all right. 'Douche bag' was letting you off easy.

Cartoon,
"Shiny, better get used to it. Anyone who disagrees with their ideology is a "troll".
Is the problem that you didn't you read ShinyEd's hate-filled post, or that it's so in-line with what you really think you never noticed?

And then of course there's Cankersore who found ShinyEd's post "quite funny".

ShinyEd, Cartoon - when you have Cankersore on your side don't you feel just a little diseased?

Causal,

I suppose suggesting that women who don't want babies should either use effective birth-control or just not have sex is probably not going to get much of a hearing.
I thought this was pretty one-sided. And it's a trend that shows up in your various posts.

The other is you keep talking about morality. The problem with morality is that it's a mostly a construct, and leads to all sorts of self-righteous behavior:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070125/ap_on_re_mi_ea/jordan_honor_killin
g

Father kills daughter; doubted virginity
AMMAN, Jordan - A Jordanian man fatally shot his 17-year-old daughter whom he suspected of having sex despite a medical exam that proved her chastity, an official said Thursday. The man surrendered to police hours after the killing, saying he had done it for family honor.

This would not be an 'honourable' thing to do if it were not a moral and religious one as well.

I suggest we keep 'morality' out of law.

People have to get counseling before the procedure.

It seems obvious that there would be some level of trauma. Did the study look into whether or not the women voluntarily had the abortions? That would probably play a pretty big role in how one mentally functioned in the aftermath.

Lower socioeconomic classes account for the largest percentage of abortions (according to something I saw the other day . . .it might be old) and I think that would be something very hard to control for with any level of accuracy because it's often the case that these people have more problems than others anyway.

That said, the findings aren't surprising (and seem fairly obvious), but also doesn't take into accound a myriad of other conditions that surround this decision.

Off-topic mini rant: Effective sex education and free and easy access to contraception for EVERYONE no questions asked will reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and make the need for studies like this and the ensuing debate mostly pointless.

So, speaking of ppl who want to take control of a woman's body....
Quote:

A college student who told police she had been raped was jailed for two days after officers found an old warrant accusing her of failing to pay restitution for a 2003 theft arrest. {The victim said that} while she was behind bars, a jail worker refused to give her a second dose of the morning-after contraceptive pill because of the worker's religious convictions the college student's attorney said.

The 21-year-old woman was released Monday only after attorney Vic Moore reported her plight to the local media... Moore said the young woman was not allowed to take the second emergency contraceptive pill until Monday afternoon, a day late, (only) after reporters called police and jail officials... Moore said his client said she paid the fine for what he described as a childish mistake. He didn't have details of that arrest. The woman has no criminal history as an adult, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

I have a simple rule on this very specific issue.

IF - you, as a pharmacist, decide to make critical health decisions for someone else based on your own personal perspectives.

THEN - I, as a patient or representative therof, will make some critical health decisions for you, based on my personal perspectives.

Translated: Deny a rape victim morning after pills, and I shall drag you over the counter and pound you silly.

It's one thing to say "I don't feel comfortable with that, here. talk to (other employee) about it" - that's fine and dandy, it's another to refuse entire in a situation where every hour counts and the next nearest pharmacy is almost 2 hours away.

It's not for them to make those kind of decisions for anyone else, no more than a cabbie (and we fired one for this) refusing to accept passengers due to their nationality - if you put yourself in a job where the question is going to come up, and you KNOW it's going to come up, I have to question the motives behind it.

I've had one female friend so far ask me to come along in such a case, because she feared such a refusal, and knew where I stood on it, thankfully there was no trouble, but this particular issue bothers me a lot and I have zero intention of being nice about it should it happen.

This is a pretty touchy issue with me, having had a bawling, distraught friend clinging to me, terrified that she'd be placed in that situation brought forth just how awful it can be.

Casual - I have to say, on the basis of my moral compass, I think we both see the needle pointing North when we're both facing the same direction. I think you and your wife have a very sensible and responsible stance on this issue, you don't force your opinions on other people in other situations, and you have a real grasp on exactly what it means to have sex, and what the consequenses of that can be. I tip my hat to ya. When you have kids, I'm pretty sure you will be more than adequite role models for them.

Desktop Hippie - I'm not trying to get down on you here, because you seem like a real nice girl from other threads I've seen, though I don't believe we've ever spoken before. I'm sorry I gotta post to you like this as a first time post to you, but I have to say that I had to choke back the vomit several times reading your posts when you make it sound as if you wouldn't have had any part in making that THING in your womb that you might choose to murder, for fear of death among other reasons less extreme such as you're not ready for kids, financially or mentally.

Maybe the kid didn't feel like being murdered either, but it had about 2-3 years before it would have been able to say any words like "Mommy" and probably at least another 2 years after that before it could put any rational thoughts into sentences like "Please don't kill me Mommy". I think people who feel the way you do about the issue should have their tubes tied before they are forced to make the decision to kill a pre-birth baby, and I recommend that option to you very strongly.

You mention that you make the choice to get in a car or take a swim when you weigh the risks, but somehow you feel and try to justify that having a baby wasn't your choice. Sorry hon, but just because you climaxed and smoked that cigarette doesn't mean that it's all over now and having a baby is a seperate event. Next time you have sex with random Joe Studly without getting the tubes tied, try to remember that the possibility of having a baby is very much intertwined with your decision to rock him and the moment he penetrates you, you've already made that decision to go for that swim or get in that car.

Respectfully.... Ahem....

Frem - Ahhhh good old Frem. My beacon of hope. My one unfaltering voice of sanity in these oftentimes dark and abysmal threads. You know I like you more and more every time I see you. There is only one single real arguement against the Anti-Abortion legislation which would cover any of the extreme situations which may be argued on behalf of the pro-abortionists, and once again you nailed it on the head.

That arguement, as you already know, is freedom of choice.

That's what's great about this country, or at least it was anyways. I can think that somebody who casually has sex with anybody and has an abortion is a selfish murderer and they can think that pregnancy is going to kill them and, rather than chose to take proper precautions beforehand, they can justify having an abortion because it changes their body, it's too tough financially, or it could kill them.

If we just let people kill their babies at their own discression (like we've been doing for how long now?) without making a Federal case out of it, well then I don't reckon I'd be hearing much about it now, would I? Personally, I think almost every reason given for abortion is a bad reason, but it's not often you're going to change anybody's mind once they've committed. They WILL do it illegally if you tell them not to and then I'll have to hear about that on the news too.

Let's take the whole morality arguement out of it completely. Government has no right legislating morality. What's moral to one religion is sin to another anyhow, so with what basis would we even begin to make those distinctions.

No... I don't know if there is a God or not, but I think if there is, he's not to happy with the notions of baby killers and they will have to pay for their crimes when Judgement Day comes. If there isn't a God, well, I just don't see how morality figures into this equation at all, and what business it is of anybodys.

So, in conclusion, BigGov has absolutely NO place in this decision and I hope that this argument ends with the right verdict and maybe one day I can stop having to hear about and discuss such an awful issue with people which often tends to show you the very most base and selfish qualities in otherwise very respectable humans.

Jack, while the "Get em tied" thought is in my eyes a valid argument, that particular issue is complicated by a whole raft of liability-related BS that makes it almost impossible to get done for the reasons you suggest.

I know this because one of my ex's actually tried to go that route after being more or less forced to carry an unwanted child due to contraceptive failure, who then abdicated custody of it in a fashion I found somewhat irresponsible and offensive, but it wasn't my kid or my decision, so I had no useful input on the matter.

After that, she made every attempt to get em tied, and nobody would freakin DO it, some because they didn't feel she was old enough (mid-20's) some because she didn't have X amount of kids already, but in general, it could not be done because it WOULD not be done, by anyone qualified to do it.

So that option is prettymuch removed from the table on this one, i'm afraid.

What rooks me so horribly is that many of the same folks who are so concerned about a fetus couldn't give a damn what happens after it pops out, and the barriers to normal folk who cannot have kids adopting are insane.

First off, it costs more in legal fees than a hummer H1 with every possible option, it comes with invasive nose-poking into ones life, and a raft of unethical religious questions and tests that have little if any bearing on the matter.

There's plenty of folks who'd adopt if it wasn't legally and financially prohibitive to do so, try dealing with MARE for a while and you'll see what a nightmare it is.

And so, my "kids" are furry little refugees from certain death that were more or less street adoptions, four of whom were in pretty awful shape to begin with - all of whom are happy, healthy and well cared for now.

Our cats are surrogate children, due to our inability to have them, and the impossibility of adoption, how sad is that ?

Yes Frem, this being such an impacting topic for everybody on the planet, there is no real cookie cutter solution. Having never looked into the possibility of getting them tied myself, I don't even know how much it costs and I'm assuming it's very expensive. I'm also assuming that it's not covered by your regular health insurance plans at work either.

I think it's very sad that you didn't have any children of your own, by blood or otherwise. You seem to me to be a very wise person who doesn't regurgitate every little BS line that you're fed on the news and I don't think enough kids have a role model at home that might influence them to question the intentions and validity of things that they are just expected to believe are true "because".

Having never looked into adoption, I never knew it cost so much. That too, is unfortunate. It makes you think that maybe all of these unwanted kids are going to be raised by the Government and maybe one day they'll outnumber the children being raised by families at home...... But Huxley already wrote about that and I'm quite sure he did a better job than I could when he wrote it all those years ago.

There are plenty of ways to prevent childbirth and they're almost 100% effective. I think that these alternatives, coupled with an adequite intelligence that will keep one from shagging some lowlife who could/would never stick around to raise a child would be enough to make this such a non-issue that I wouldn't ever have to hear or think about it anymore.

I want somebody to say that the issue is over and the Government is staying out of it, and then I will never have to hear about it again. I don't want to judge other people and I don't like doing it either, but I find some of the things posted here infuriating. BigGov is forcing me, nay all of us, to pass judgement here. They should stay the hell out of it and then it can remain the abortionee's and their doctor's business as it should be.

As frustrated as people make me here and in the "real world", I can't even smoke a damn cigarette without going out in the sub-zero weather.

Maryland Senate Bill 669 Legalizes Madness? Commiefornia its 123467(a) which exempts a mother from criminal and civil liability for the "perinatal death" of her child but no true definition of "Perinatal death". New language added to AB 2223 proposed legislation would shield the mother from civil and criminal charges for any “actions or omissions” related to her pregnancy, “including miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion, or perinatal death.” There is a description of death separate from miscarrriage or stillbirth or aboution: "miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion, or perinatal death", some legal experts say it is intended to cover death after birth. If Roe v Wade is overturned the Dems will win in a landslide. If this happens, I believe it is possible they will clean up the Supreme Court. Justices can be impeached, and those who’ve lied about how they would not overturn what has been precedent for decades must be impeached for lying.

This country is founded on the rule of law. This rule of law can only be maintained if we maintain a separation of church and state. It is obvious some on the court are not capable of doing that. They need to go for that reason. And of course, for lying to Congress. That is after all is said and done, against the law.

The reality is that 30 pct of women have had an abortion some time in their lifetime. even responsible women on birth control having sex with their husbands. Bc birth cotrol isn't foolproof.

That's 15% of the voting age population. And who know how many sisters and mothers sympathize with them?

Debate not just an America thing?

The Oldenburg Baby is the name given by the German media to Tim, an infant born in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany on 6 July 1997. Tim was born prematurely in the twenty-fifth week of pregnancy as the result of a failed late-term abortion. Doctors had expected the child would soon die and thus withheld treatment for nine hours. He became a focus of the debate surrounding abortion, especially late-term abortion, and its legal and ethical consequences.

Tim died on the 4th of January 2019 from a lung infection; he was 21 years old

In order to overturn Roe v Wade, Justice Alito felt like the only way to make it acceptable was to soften the blow by clarifying that he didn't support a steady trawl through Supreme Court precedent, overturning every decision along the way that might somehow be related to Roe. In practice there's no telling if he'll stick to his word.

Justice Alito's list of rights (which were previously used as justifications for the Roe v Wade right to abortion decision) he promises NOT to terminate, but he could if he felt the need:

the right to marry a person of a different race;
the right to marry while in prison;
the right to obtain contraceptives;
the right to reside with relatives;
the right to make decisions about the education of one's children;
the right not to be sterilized without consent;
and the right in certain circumstances not to undergo involuntary surgery, forced administration of drugs, or other substantially similar procedures.

In 2017 and 2018, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) defended her support for Supreme Court Justices Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh, in part, by pointing to their respect for precedent.

You are the one that predicted the Republican Justices would not overturn Roe v Wade. This written decision says the Justices would. Now that the decision is out in the open, the big shots in the Republican Party can call the different Republican justices before the decision is official and tell the justices what would be best for the GOP in the November election. Making and receiving those phone calls is completely unethical, and if they were caught would get the justices kicked off the Supreme Court by impeachment, as if Congress will ever know what really happened in secret. The justices aren't going to admit that they changed their minds because they were told to wait until after the election.

Republicans Are Furious About That Supreme Court Leak

The court has lost so much institutional legitimacy that its rulings are just another form of political combat. It would be terrible for the conservative agenda long term if the idea were to catch on with voters that Republican justices are naked political partisans. No wonder Republicans are mad about it.

They’ve been pursuing a deeply unpopular legal victory for the last 50 years. When victory is in their grasp, somebody tried to take it away.

The GOP’s biggest names have treated their impending triumph mostly as an afterthought, while furiously highlighting the fact that someone leaked the decision early.

The response among conservative pundits has been outright unhinged (not that there’s anything unusual about that).

Some, like Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro, have suggested liberals are trying to incite murder. “There is little question that this leak is designed to create threat to the life and limb of any justice who signs onto the majority opinion,” he tweeted.

(Such a claim might be reasonable if the pro-choice movement had any significant history whatsoever of political violence; but unlike the anti-abortion movement, it does not.)

Others, such as commentator Matt Walsh, have called the leak an “insurrection,” and have tried to claim it is a graver attack on American democracy than the Jan. 6 Capitol riot—which was, as you may recall, an actual violent putsch in which a mob tried to upend the results of a presidential election.

Republicans are trying to distract from the substance of the court’s decision by talking about the leak instead, because overturning Roe is deeply unpopular.

Republicans are genuinely concerned that this could ruin their impending victory. Fox News Host Laura Ingraham told the truth when she says she’s mad about “a naked attempt to try and change the outcome before the final decision is issued.”

The GOP is haunted by the possibility that one of the court’s conservatives could go squishy and change their mind at the last minute, much the way Chief Justice John Roberts did when he decided to uphold the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate after initially voting to strike it down.

Republicans are getting worked up defending the Supreme court’s honor, and treating any breach of its internal procedures as a violation of “sacred traditions,” as Tennessee Sen. March Blackburn put it. After all, they control the institution!

They have a durable, ideologically driven majority, meaning the party now has a vested interest in defending the court’s institutional legitimacy while also pretending as if its decisions aren’t driven by politics. The worst thing that could happen to the GOP would be for the public’s trust in the court to collapse, just as it achieves its crowning but politically unpopular legal victory.

Have you now become anti-abortion because the typical Trump voter is? Or have you become anti-abortion because the typical Biden voter is not?

Justice Alito has given speeches where he declares himself a Roman Catholic opposed to abortion. This has been talked about many times, but Justices are to make decisions based only on the law and are NEVER to make decisions based on their religion or political party. Some justices sneak religion and politics into their decisions because once they are appointed they can do as they please. The justices then try to put clothing on their naked religious beliefs. (The worst justices also like to say it not themselves who has a religious/political bias; it's the Democrats!)

I can see what Alito is doing. He is not honest enough to cut down on the words and just make his opinion one sentence: "As a Roman Catholic and a Republican, I rule that abortion is illegal in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, and all territories." His 99 pages of words are camouflage because he didn't write that the decision is only because of his religion and political party.

Alito did bow down a little bit to the law by not declaring abortion illegal everywhere. Alito is leaving the decision to every legislature. That was nice, but he should have just declared abortion unconstitutional because it offends his God and his political party. That would have been the whole truth. But that would also make it far too obvious what Alito is doing in his decision.

In his speeches, Justice Alito is honest. He is not so honest in his written decisions:

Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Alito gave a speech on November 12, 2020 to The Federalist Society. Alito took aim at abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and gun control. He also called out COVID-19 restrictions for imposing “previously unimaginable restrictions on individual liberty.” Read the full transcript here.

As afterthought, it is also dishonest for a Supreme Court Justice to decide based on being bribed. We will never know if a Supreme Court Justice was bribed (because lawyers are generally smart enough not to admit to a crime, even in their posthumous autobiographies) but there is a decision that makes me concerned that the Supreme Court does not understand that bribery is as wrong as making decisions based on a justice's religion and political party:

TRIGGER WARNING: It might possibly break your brain when you realize that not everybody is black and white in their every thought. Your question to me right now could have a few words changed and reversed on you and I already know what your answer would be.

Yet at the same time, in America alone, 63 Million weren't born since Roe v. Wade. Multiply that by how many kids 63 Million kids would have had and we'd already be a country of over 1/2 a Billion people.

You think gas and food prices are high right now?

Think the clogged up ports and the shipping catastrophe that Joe Biden* and team haven't figured out how to fix for a year is bad now?

How large is a 63 Million person Carbon Footprint multiplied by their children?

Not to mention that the kids who weren't born ended up being spared being raised by the monster who ultimately murdered them, probably avoiding an unhappy and screwed up life altogether.

Bottom Line: This is not an issue that will change the way I vote about anything or anyone.

That being said, I think throwing it out is a pretty foolish thing to do. Even if Roe v. Wade should never have been enshrined for good legal reason, that doesn't matter in the slightest. Think about how stupid the average person you know is and then ask yourself if they can even read one sentence of legalese let alone understand it. Reality has no basis on whatever the outcome of all of this ends up being. This one is 100% left to the whims of the court of public opinion.

The reactionary, emotional, stupid public and their asinine opinion.

Was the wind blowing hard enough against Democrats to overshadow this? I guess we'll find out in November.

One thing you can always count on though is that there is never a good opportunity or situation that Republicans can't totally fuck up.

Glad to see there's still some things that never change.

Yanno...

The strangeness of all of this makes me think there might be some bigger looming issues at play here.

Why this? Why now?

Why do the one single possible thing that could fuck up Republican's chances right when the Democrats are showing the entire exhausted country how inept and evil they are? Why allow Democrats to back themselves onto the ledge of a cliff so high that they'd never recover from the fall only to hand them a loaded rocket launcher at the last minute?

Are things about to get worse than they already are somehow?

I'm talking something big. Really, really big. Something that the Democrats could never hope to escape out from under while it happens under their watch.

Overturning Roe v. Wade

Republicans are turning the public conversation to the question of who leaked the document. They are blaming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who hasn’t even taken her Supreme Court seat yet — for the leak, although observers point out that the leak seems more likely to have come from a hard-core right-wing antiabortion activist, since it will make it very hard for any of those justices currently in the majority to soften their stance.

The draft decision takes a sweepingly broad position against Roe v. Wade, declaring that the Fourteenth Amendment cannot protect the right to abortion because such a right is not “deeply rooted in this Nation’s history and tradition.” This opens the door to similar attacks on constitutional rights previously established by the Supreme Court.

The indignant tone and aggressive reasoning at the Supreme Court makes clear how empowered the conservative majority believes itself to be.

Republican lawmakers are downplaying the reach of the apparent decision, avoiding the question of whether gay rights are next on the chopping block. Bryan Metzger of Business Insider asked “nearly a dozen” Republican senators whether they think the draft decision overturning Roe v. Wade threatens the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision recognizing the right to same-sex marriage, and whether they supported overturning the Obergefell decision. Metzger wrote: “None gave a clear yes or no answer, and several outright declined to comment.”

Right-wing commentators today called for the court to end recognition of the right to gay marriage.

Texas governor Greg Abbott said that Texas might challenge the 1982 Plyler v. Doe decision. “I think we will resurrect that case and challenge this issue again,” Abbott told a talk show host, “the times are different than when Plyler versus Doe was issued many decades ago.” The real difference is 6 Republicans on the Supreme Court.

The draft decision has been a clarifying moment for the country. This is not a culture war, as if it were a battle between two sides over hemlines or movie ratings. The right seeks to break through all restraints on government power in an effort to establish a society that aligns with a view of America as a White, Christian country.

The MAGA crowd is the most extreme political organization that’s existed in American history. This moment echos the days after the 1857 Dred Scott v Sandford decision by the Supreme Court took away voters’ ability to stop the spread of slavery. Like the draft decision we have seen this week, that decision was clearly political and drew on appallingly bad history to reach a conclusion that gave extraordinary power to the country’s slave-owners. Horace Greeley, the prominent editor of the New York Daily Tribune, wrote that the Dred Scott decision was “entitled to just so much moral weight as would be the judgment of a majority of those congregated in any Washington bar-room.”

I have been hearing the same since the 1960's from people who complain about the Republicans, but find the Democrats to be worse. Then the complainers vote Republican.

I have followed the life stories of these complainers and their kids -- Republicans are bad but Democrats are worse so I vote for the Republicans -- and their lives do not run straight and smooth, kind of like yours, 6ix. Pick a side, 6ix, and support it. I have no problems with either Democrats or with my life because I picked a side and stick with it. I know where the Democrats are going and I, personally, know where I am going and have goals that never change and are not foggy or unfocused. I don't do the dishonest confused nonsense that most semi-Republican-but-not-really Texans do: I don't cheat on my wife, don't cheat on my taxes, I don't lie, I show up for work and do my job. Trump couldn't truthfully say that (although he would falsely claim he has those fine qualities). All the Trump voters I know (excluding the rich ones) are just as flaky as Trump is, make the same false claims about themselves, insisting they are solid, trustworthy, hardworking citizens. They are NOT. If they believe what they say about themselves, they have to be self-deluded to not make the unbreakable connection between being a fake who doesn't acknowledge he is fake and having a troubled life.

Trump voters are Jokers.

The Supreme Court abortion opinion has enormous implications for the future of American law.

In a matter of months, nearly half of the United States will ban something that is seen by millions of Americans — and that has been protected for over 40 years by the US Constitution — as a crucial human right. Those states will also seek to extend the bans beyond their borders. Texas is already doing this, including an extradition provision in a recent restriction on medication abortion that would allow the state to prosecute residents elsewhere who send the pills into Texas.

Abortion opponents in Texas also hope to find ways to restrict abortions that Texans receive out of state. “All options are on the table,” John Seago, legislative director of Texas Right to Life, said in an April interview. “Our legislature is very motivated, and they’ll continue to be motivated even post-Roe.”

The larger legal implications of such efforts are immense. No one knows exactly what will happen when a state like Texas tries to prosecute abortion providers in a state like California, or what the courts will do if and when such prosecutions are challenged. Such a situation, however, eerily echoes divides between free and slave states prior to the Civil War, and between Southern and Northern states under Jim Crow.

The parallels become even more pronounced when you recognize that the populations most affected by the fall of Roe, especially Black Americans, were also those who had their rights stripped from them under slavery and Jim Crow, Goodwin pointed out. And some of the same states that enacted Jim Crow legislation are those seeking to ban abortion today. Those states also “still happen to have legislatures that are predominantly white, and overwhelmingly male,” Goodwin said. “They haven’t significantly changed.”

Interstate conflict over slavery, obviously, eventually gave rise to the Civil War. Losing the war, states enshrined racial discrimination in law and practice under Jim Crow. It took a mass movement led by Black Americans — in which many were killed — to wrest back victories like Brown v. Board of Education and the Voting Rights Act. Even after Brown, President Dwight Eisenhower had to call in the National Guard so that nine Black students could go to school in Arkansas.

It doesn't appear that CNN is very hopeful:

If CNN is showing the GOP generic at +7, you know that means it's more likely +10 or +11 in favor of Republicans.

It's the dying gasps of the Democratic Party.

They made the choice to align themselves with psychopaths since the Obama Administration. Now they're going to pay for that choice.

I don't blame the Corps for sitting Abortion out after how poorly all their other takes have gone over with The People.

In a perfect world, Republicans would break them all up starting in December of 2022, but in our timeline the Republicans aren't much better than Democrats are and this will not be the outcome.

Not while people like Mitt Romney are still in power anyhow.

A Salute to Abortions

I think the audience they were cutting to had to be a different audience than what was in the room with her.

I'll bet Netflix is having second thoughts about this one right now.

Netflix Price on July 8, 2018 when this video was uploaded to YouTube: $530.76
Netflix Current Stock Price: $180.97

Americans were down with Safe, Legal and Rare.

They weren't down with this fucking clown show.

"God Bless abortions! And God Bless America!"

Americans already forgot about Covid. They won't remember Ukraine by November.

But by all means, rail hard on this one until election day and see where it gets you when the lowest 20% of people can't even afford to live anymore and you've got people wishing they did get an abortion when they can't even find any baby formula and are in the middle of bidding wars for it on ebay because Democrats suck at everything they do.

But don't worry about Michelle Wolf though. She'll be the first person to tell you that she has money and she can afford as many abortions and as much baby formula as she wants.

Well... at least she could in 2018. Anybody know what truck stop diner she's working at today? Maybe we could get Taylor Lorenz to figure that one out for us.

As for Netflix, you should probably go a step beyond what your PR firm is telling you to do and remove this video. It's only got 600,000 views right now. It's likely to get a lot more than that for all the wrong reasons in the upcoming months.

Alito draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade Quotes Infamous Witch Trial Judge With Long-Discredited Ideas

Justice Alito’s leaked opinion cites Sir Matthew Hale, a 17th-century jurist who conceived the notion that husbands can’t be prosecuted for raping their wives, who sentenced women to death as “witches,” and whose misogyny stood out even in his time.

The so-called marital rape exemption — the legal notion that a married woman cannot be raped by her husband — traces to Hale. So does a long-used instruction to jurors to be skeptical of reports of rape.

Hale, dispensing life advice, veered into a screed against women, describing them as “chargeable unprofitable people” who “know the ready way to consume an estate, and to ruin a family quickly.” Hale particularly despaired of the changes he saw in young women, writing, “And now the world is altered: young gentlewomen learn to be bold” and “talk loud.”

Alito, in his draft opinion, invokes “eminent common-law authorities,” including Hale, to show how abortion was viewed historically not as a right, but as a criminal act. “Two treatises by Sir Matthew Hale likewise described abortion of a quick child who died in the womb as a ‘great crime’ and a ‘great misprision,’” Alito wrote.
misprision = "the deliberate concealment of one's knowledge of a treasonable act or a felony."

Even before “quickening” — defined by Alito as “the first felt movement of the fetus in the womb, which usually occurs between the 16th and 18th week of pregnancy” — Hale believed an abortion could qualify as homicide. “Hale wrote that if a physician gave a woman ‘with child’ a ‘potion’ to cause an abortion, and the woman died, it was ‘murder’ because the potion was given ‘unlawfully to destroy her child within her,’” Alito wrote.

Hale’s pronouncement became the accepted common law and served as foundation in the United States for immunizing a husband accused of raping his wife. And where did Hale’s pronouncement come from? What did he base it upon? Who knows? “Hale appears to have been the first to articulate what later would become an accepted legal principle, that a husband cannot be charged with raping his wife,” according to a footnote in one law review article. Another law review article, titled “The Marital Rape Exemption: Evolution to Extinction,” called Hale’s pronouncement “an unsupported, extrajudicial statement” lacking in authority.

Some observers have been taken aback that Alito referenced Hale. But not everyone was surprised. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a conservative Supreme Court justice will cherry-pick a swine as a timeless authority on reproductive rights.
