Why do they keep doing this?

Quote:

A new version of the coin, paying tribute to American presidents, goes into general circulation Thursday. Even though doing away with the bill could save hundreds of millions of dollars each year in printing costs, there is no plan to scrap the bill in favor of the more durable coin.

Two recent efforts to promote wide usage of a dollar coin proved unsuccessful. A quarter-century ago, it showed feminist Susan B. Anthony on the front; then one in 2000 featuring Sacagawea, the Shoshone Indian who helped guide the Lewis and Clark expedition.

The latest dollar coin will bear Washington's image, followed later this year by those of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. A different president will appear on the golden dollar coins every three months.

The series of coins will depict four different presidents per year, in the order they served.

Congress voted to create the new dollar coin, betting that this series would be more popular than its recent predecessors.

Because it's a good idea. A dollar bill lasts about 4 months and then you have to pay to print more. Keeping with paper for what is a small denomination is a waste of money (he he)

Because it's a hell of a lot cheaper. Hopefully this time, it will stick.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The Susan B was too similar to the quarter. But the Sacajawea was wildly popular with everyone except the banks, which refused to distribute it because it they don't like dealing with coins. (too heavy)

simply remedy-- tell the mints to quit printing $1's.. When the paper ones wear out, business and folks will have to use the coins.

Hmmm. I'm just the type of sucker this gimmick is geared towards. I'm still waiting for that South Dakota quarter to complete 2006. Add to that the fact that I really like using coins instead of bills for unit 1 and it's a recipe for high usage/collection. Why did I feel the need to never spend any California quarter that came into my possession? It's the same reason I continue to buy O S Card books in the Ender's series even when it's clear he's jumped the shark and is just phoning in the anti-choice propaganda (c'mon, the great Bean and Petra embroyo chase? What da hell?)

So, yeah, color me happy about this. I'm just hoping I can get more William Henry Harrison's than the number of days he was alive while President. And who wouldn't want to buy something super fattening with a Taft dollar? Or wave a Lincoln in front of your favorite Great White Southern Hope Confederate Sympathizer while tossing the James Buchanan or the Andrew Johnson in the toilet? Buying a shot of whiskey with Grant dollars? Priceless. The possibilties are endless. And just wait until the William Jefferson Clinton dollar coin comes out. Guaranteed to make any wingnut's head spin around 720 degrees. Actually, if they haven't already designed the thing, I think they should have Bill's penis on one side rather than his cranial orb. That's the part of his body that all the Republican right-wing radio listeners fixated on. Talk about envy

The main reason we don't see the Dollar $1 Coin in widespread circulation is because of :

A) Personal collectors
B) Vending Machine industry

They've got all the coins right now. The Treasury should stop printing any new dollar bills and go with only coins if they ever want the coins to become popular.

I infrastructure just isn't there yet. I bet only half of the vending machines accept the new $1 coin. Waitresses will be so overburdened by the increased weight they will be too tired to give good service. And what the crap are the guys supposed to stick in the strippers g-string. It'll be mass chaos.

The penny is what we have to do away with. it actually costs more to mint that than it is worth.

Time to revive the age-old art of coin clipping...or just melt them down.

Dollar coins are a good idea a priori, but unless there's a concerted, comprehensive effort on the part of the mint to insert them into the mechanisms of daily life, like machines and meters, I just don't see why this attempt should turn out any different than the previous two. Logical arguments aside, if people don't use them, then by definition it's not a good idea. I guess we'll see...

I can see the logistical advantages, but I absolutely hate carrying coins.

I don't like change either. Whenever I get it I put it into a jar and take it to the bank when it gets full. I'd probably do the same with the $1 coin. Unless I intended on spending it like at the vending machine at work and such.

I think the reason it never really caught on with John Q. Public is because John Q. Public never got any. In the 5 or 6 years that the Sacagawea coin has been around I have probably only received 2 as monetary compensation. Course that and 2/3 of my transactions are done by check or debit/credit card. Which I assume are also rising trend amongst the rest of the population as well.

I almost can compare this with Firefly. Lots of people have seen it, some like it, some don't. And only a few are trying to do something productive about it while the rest of the country is indifferent or just plain old ignore it.

Part of the problem is that the mint decided to make it a big coin. If you look around most high value coins in teh world are either small and thick or standard size and bimetal. A small thick coin would be easy for folks with poor eyesight to identify by touch and probably not weigh much more than a couple of quarters.

Because it's easier, cheaper, and makes more sense? I'm pretty sure those were the reasons. Anyway, you aren't offering any arguments against...

How could you possibly talk about the dollar coin a priori? Give me an a priori argument for the dollar coin.

Without any previous data regarding actual use by the public, it would seem to make intuitive sense to introduce a coin with the value of our primary denomination of currency. But if we have reason to believe people won't use it, it becomes less of a good idea.

If you want to debate epistemology, I'll concede the term may have been used in error.

Sorry, Eric. I'd just gotten home from my Metaphysics class, and was feeling fiesty. In the vernacular sense, I think you're right.

you mean near worthless? thats all this is.. a distraction, to keep the public entertained with stupid gimmicks, instead of asking questions like why we buy our currency at interest from a private bank, why we're in debt trillions of dollars, or why we've gone off the gold standard... and the list goes on

Begin sarcasm

Yes that has to be the reason. The government is so cunning. How could we be such fools and fall for that ridiculous diversionary tactic.

End sarcasm
