I don't recall seeing hair spray on the Botany Bay. And what's with having a hard time finding a lifeless planet???? *brain circuits over-loading* MOST PLANETS ARE!!!!!!! I smell cheap and scientifically stupid plot device there. And sensors and computers could not be so innacurate as to mistake Ceti-Alpha 5 for 6, even with the orbit change. Gino, search your feelings, you know this to be true! TMP was gold Chrisisall

The purpose of war is to support your government’s decisions by force.”

More scientific stupidity. And it's not nerdy, imagine a Bond film where he's underwater and holds his breath for 20 minutes while fighting villains...at some point (3 minutes for me, probably 5-7 for the general audience) the audience will start to get the idea that reality is not being addressed here. By the end of the movie, I felt (again) like I just sat through a sermon. A hi-tek sermon. The thing that killed me was that the book had some pretty scathing things to say about out modern political and military systems--and yet none of those messages came through in the film. The "message" of the film (which did, indeed, seem to be "war bad") is actually discussed and dismissed in the book. In one scene (occurring in a high school classroom) a student says basically that war is bad, because violence never solved anything. The reply was that violence actually has solved many things (to wit: the Holocaust). And then the instructor gives my absolute favorite line: “War is not violence and killing, pure and simple; war is controlled violence, for a purpose. What is impossible is for just a normal insect to reach those sorts of sizes. Insects don't have lungs, they breath through tubes all over their body and there is a big limit on the body size that can support. Not only that but an exo-skeleton can't support creatures much larger than insects we see around today on Earth. As for how long it takes for the Asteroid to reach Earth it's not impossible that the bugs actually started they're attack eons ago, and it's not impossible to put an asteroid where you want it. Very hard and takes quite a bit of math as well as accurate astrography but not entirely impossible, afterall it's basically what NASA is doing right now. I suspect the bugs would have to have evolved some sort of radar for sensing where objects are, it's not as unbelievable as it may sound. Animals on Earth have developed Sonar, which is essentially much like Radar in theory, but using sound rather than radio waves, and animals on Earth have the ability to sense light radiation which is the same stuff as radio waves, just a different wavelength. I'm not a fan of ST too much though, but one of the interesting things I find with it that most people seem to miss is the peculiar form of militaristic fascism prevalent within the society. More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes! No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.
