Wow. First it was Down to Earth, then it was Pootie Tang, then it was Osmosis Jones, then it was Bad Company, then it was Head of State, and now it's I Think I Love My Wife.

Is this man is ever going to accept that fact that he's not a leading actor?

He's offered a ridiculous amount of money to play these parts. Why would he turn them down?

This question should really be directed at the people who play a part in casting him.

Anybody read reviews on how Gina Torres did in this movie? Sounded like a high profile role for her.

Not that it matters, but he directed this one. I'm at least willing to give him a chance based on that. Otherwise, he is a pretty lame actor.

I'm curious too. I'd go see the movie just to see Gina.

While that may be true, the director isn't the only one that gets a say in casting.

Also, "lame acting" can really only be within context. As in, if a stupid silly comedy is being done, then we don't exactly need a Gwyneth Paltrow or Russell Crowe level actor as someone like Jon Stewart or Dave Chappelle would do i.e. it just depends on what you're going for.

EDIT: As some above has asked, has anyone seen this movie? B/c that is what really determines if it missed the mark or not. Whether they got to where they wanted to go.

True, but if Chris Rock is directing a movie, you can be pretty sure that Chris Rock's going to be in it.

And as far as the 'lame acting' comment goes, I was just speaking in generalities. Guy doesn't so much act, but rather talks in varying volumes at people, regardless of what movie he's in.

Hehe FMF.... I thought I was being nice about it.

I really like Martin Lawrence though. I wasn't kidding about that. You ever see Black Knight? That movie was a trip.

I think that's true of any actor turned director. Similarly, many directors trying to get in front of the camera (with varying success). Joss being one of them (though I think the Tam sessions was the only time this actually happened).

I think you're right about that. But, in some cases, this is the type of "acting" that is called for (or at least doesn't matter if the actor does it that way) e.g. I remember him being a mail-boy in a movie (forget the title) in which he really didn't get many lines. Anyway, pretty much every time he spoke, he was asking for something and people just walked away. So, he had to raise his voice to continue the "conversation."

I think of it as, sometimes you want "bad acting" to make a point, or some such. Mulholland Dr. comes to mind as an example.

At any rate, I think that we're in agreement that Chris Rock is a bad actor.

But, at the same time, the point I'm trying to make is that this might not matter for this movie. Only viewing it will reveal whether it's a good movie (whether because of or despite him).

Funny, that.. no, Chris Rock can't act...

But you know who can ?
and this has always struck me as entirely bizarre ?

Ice-T

In fact I think more of his acting than I do of his music, which I would rate on the high side of mediocre, although creative.

The performance that convinced me of his ability was actually a B-flick called surviving the game, fairly stock storyline of typical hollywood uncreative measure, but he did a heck of a job of it.
(Jack, you'd like it if you rented it, trust me)

Although I do agree that Ice-T is currently a good actor, it pretty much because of how much practice the guy has had plus his mentality toward acting. As in, he's not one of the young punks that thinks they can start off at the top. He started by getting every little bit part he could and took acting seriously (lessons, etc).

Have you seen Mean Guns (1997)? His acting isn't exactly good in this movie. But, at the same time, it's pretty good. I'd recommend watching it if you haven't already. I quite enjoyed it (very funny in parts). But, keep in mind that it is a B movie.

At any rate, the guy gets a lot of respect from me because of how he entered the field. Quite frankly, I really think that this way should be forced on all comers. It really pisses me off when I see people like Spears starting off at pretty much the top (even if it is short lived).

Hey Frem,

Good to see ya. I couldn't stay away too long myself.... just trying to stay out of trouble for the most part now. Hadn't seen you post for a while, so I was wondering if you were gone after it got all nasty-like back there.

I haven't really seen Ice-T that much myself. I know he is (was?) in one of those cop shows, but I can't stand cop or lawyer shows because I think they just show the sheep the very worst of humanity and scare them into thinking we need more cops and laws and government.... just picking up where public school left off, I guess.

I saw him in Tank Girl, but even he says that it was a joke. In an interview afterwards, when he was asked why he would take the role of a kangaroo mutant thing, he said "hey man, if they offered you "x" amount of dollars, you'd do it too and don't even tell me you wouldn't" (I'm paraphrasing here of course, there were some explitives in there, no doubt). The movie that I saw T in that I gotta say I love cause it's so bad was "Leprechaun in the Hood". That movie sucks on the same level that "Troll" with Sonny Bono and it's sequel did. It is so horrible that I love it. Leprechaun rap. Leprechaun smoking bud. Leprechaun getting fine looking ladies. Whoo weee! I'd recommend it to you, but you might hate it... it's definately not for everybody, but I sure got a hell of a laugh from it.

I'll have to give "Surviving the Game" a look. Thanks for not putting any spoilers in there. I love going into a movie not knowing a thing about it beforehand.

Well, I liked Tank Girl, a lot, Lori was just plain awesome, and seriously, it's based on a comic book, so there's gonna be larger than life ridiculousness - which came off spectacularly.
(And the soundtrack just whupped ass, must admit)

Three more suggestions for the "So totally awful it's gorram hi-larious" pile.

Blackula - spend half of this one the floor cause I watched it while drunk.

Tales from the hood - cheesy acting and a comedic take on what's actually a pretty GOOD story, strangely.

Undercover Brother - funniest of the lot, if you have the right sense of humor for it.

I love laughing at society's stupid misconceptions, really I do.
