Just thought I'd toss this out here, apparently the Brits are going to evaluate a system that ranks drugs based off of the actual damage they do, what a novel idea.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6474053.stm

For people who don't want to read it, alcohol comes in 5th, tobacco comes in 9th and weed comes in 11th.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

Very nice.

The article does say people should be treated as 'adults' when being given information about drug harm. I would add that ALL drugs except those prescribed for specific purposes should be off limits to those under 23 (ideally). Brains are still substantively wiring-up till then.

Does anyone even care what the UK does or doesn't do?

I was pleased when I read the article last week - I doubt that the commonsense method of evaluating harm will seep into the American "war on drugs" any time soon, but I hope our policy-makers might see this as a chance to revamp our own classifications/corresponding laws.

Don't make faces.

This link to MPP (marijuana policy project), provides insightful information for anyone interested in changing the US policy against medical marijuana. It is time this country came to terms with the benefits of this herb.

I'm not positive but I think that may be the first time I've ever seen common sense, American and drugs in the same sentence...

Hey KM...lighten up a bit on the British. After all they have given us :
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Harry Potter, The Hullabaloos, King Arthur, Monty Python, Benny Hill, and fought alongside America in WWI & WWII....Damn brave people, the Brits! I can't say that America, yes big bad America, would have weathered the Nazi blitzkreig and V-1's & V2-'s attacks as courageously as England.

You forgot to mention they came up with cricket and rugby...

... which were then bastardised into baseball and American "foot"ball.

I can.

But I like the Brits. I’m a big supporter of Churchill’s Anglo-American alliance. And I suppose I can forgive them for Harry Potter, the first one wasn’t so bad.

Interestingly enough, you know what Britain reminds me of? 1940s America. I don’t know why. It’s not like I ever actually visited 1940s America to actually have a reference of comparison. It just has that feel about it.

Well, judging by the number of teenage girls walking around with baby carriages, I guess one could be forgiven for thinking there's a baby-boom. But apart from that... huh!?!?

Like I said, I don’t know where it comes from. I don’t have that same perception of Ireland, and the two societies are pretty similar. It’s an aesthetic thing.

*coughsplutter* excuse me?

finn, 40's fashion has been in the last couple of years so if you were over here recently maybe it was the pencil skirts and shoulder pads that threw you

but on topic, sounds like a good plan, too sensible to actually work...

Fair enough ShinyEd. I'll go along if you take Harry Potter off that list. If you don't I'll be forced to bring up the Telitubbies! We can keep score. Blitzkrieg? I didn't realize Germany got tanks on British soil. So much for American public schools.

VINCENOIRROCKNROLLSTAR

i very much doubt that Britain will change its draconian drug laws anytime soon ,even overhauling the current system of classification probably won`t happen for quite some time yet ,just look what happened when cannabis (marijuana and all derivitives thereof)was reclassified as a class `c` drug ,there was an immediate media furor ,including the classic story from the early 70`s that `newer much stronger strains are now being developed`;i can`t honestly believe that this is still printed ...hogwash where do you think all the `haze` varieties lieate from?.
if reclassification does go ahead we can all expect horror stories ranging from mushrooms made my son go mad ,i slept for 10 weeks because of ketamine ,i broke my back jumping from a roof whilst high on l.s.d. all total bollocks .its about time some much needed common sense was brought into play over this issue but then America`s drug policy is the model for the British system and all the time the bush administartion are in power there will be no more common sense there will be no more partying hard dudes ..there will be no more mind expansivenession (thats a dubyaism for ya )there will be no creativity booms amongst the generations to come instead there will be sick violent minded criminals roaming free to terrorise our communities searching for the money for their next fix ...sorry i digressed there ..anyway the blair cabinet have no plans to re-classify diddly squit except their paypackets

dingle dangle strap it to my ankle and when i say bend and spread you better brace yourself my dear friend for i am the giver and you are a contortionist with a penchant for dali

Bob Barr Flip-Flops on Pot
By: Chris Frates
March 28, 2007 04:49 PM EST

Bob Barr, who as a Georgia congressman authored a successful amendment that blocked D.C. from implementing a medical marijuana initiative, has switched sides and become a lobbyist for the Marijuana Policy Project.

But that doesn’t mean he has become a bong-ripping hippie. He isn’t pro-drug, he said, just against government intrusion.

“I, over the years, have taken a very strong stand on drug issues, but in light of the tremendous growth of government power since 9/11, it has forced me and other conservatives to go back and take a renewed look at how big and powerful we want the government to be in people’s lives,” Barr said.

Aaron Houston, the project’s government relations director, said Barr brings a “great deal of credibility, particularly among people on the Republican side of the aisle.”

“He certainly would not have been the first person I would have expected to sign off to us, but I’m very pleased that he has,” Houston said. “I’m very pleased that he has come around, and I hope he serves as an example to his former colleagues.”

Ironically, Barr said he will help lead the fight to give District residents a say on whether to allow medical marijuana — the very thing the “Barr Amendment” denied them in 1998. He will lobby for the rights of states to set their own medical marijuana policy without federal interference.

The four-term former Republican congressman will also work to unplug a youth anti-drug campaign which a recent study showed actually increased the likelihood that all teens would smoke pot.

thanks Bob - a little common sense in government - about time
