First I've heard of it, and I couldn't believe it so I looked for a second source (and found one, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6315917.stm).

Still can't believe it... completely ridiculous and f'd up. Luckily I only take the bus or go by foot, so it won't affect me personally.

Best part of the article was the use of the word "forensicated."
Quote:

Only car owners who agree to pay the fee, which in theory is to cover storage, are assured their cars will be “forensicated” — which means dusted down for fingerprints or swabbed for DNA.

Now that's a cool word.

On the actual topic, however, I've got nothing.

This is the problem with foreigners not understanding the American system. We don't bribe people to get government services, we bribe them to get government business. The sine qua non of First World commerce. Sheesh. You gotta explain everything to these people.

I can tell there are a number of US posters who have never had THEIR car stolen.

"In what is seen by many as a double whammy for victims, police have the right to bill the owner of a stolen car for the costs of recovery and storage."

This is SOP in the US and has been for the last 20 years at least. If your car is disabled, badly parked for too long, involved in a crime OR stolen and recovered it goes to an impound lot and you get charged $$$ BY THE DAY ! Not from the day you are notified and might possibly be responsible for picking it up, BTW, from the day it arrives. (You may be notified up to two months later that your car is there. I speak from experience.) And there is no guarantee your car will be safe there either. People ransoming their cars have been known to 'borrow' tires, batteries, gas and other sundry from the cars held there.

So people, no finger-pointed at the Brits for this one. The US is way ahead ... ... or behind, however you care to look at it.

But presumably in America they do the investigation for free. I can understand charging a housing fee for the car until it's picked up, but charging to investigate a crime a WTF situation.

No investigation is done in car thefts when the car is recovered. After all, you got your car back, right? No problemo.

(Sometimes an investigation is done as part of an operation to bring down a chop-shop or organized operation. But randon thefts where the car is recovered - not so much.)

I had my car impounded once. And you know what? I didn't whine about it. Why? Because I should have known better than to think that I could just leave my car parked in a public parking lot for weeks on end. I didn't know that there was a time limit, but ignorance of the law is no excuse. But we're not talking about having your car towed and impounded. We're talking about having it stolen, e.g. criminally broken into and driven away. If that happens, and the vehicle is recovered, the police ought to do their job, which is to enforce the law. A citizen oughtn't have to pay the police to do their job and that, I believe, is what shocks people about this particular story.

My mother lived in a suburb of Atlanta and had the same experience. Her car was stolen one Christmas Eve of all times. Months went by, her insurance paid off and she bought a replacement. Then sometime in May, she got a letter from the City of Atlanta Police Department that the car had been impounded on freaking December 27th and was at such and such impound lot. Of course by that time the impound fees were larger than her phone number. Since her insurance company now owned the car she passed the info on to them so we don't know how it finally wound up.

My car was stolen between the AM I went in to work and the PM I was expecting to drive home. The police took the report and that was then end of it until months later when I got the letter saying it was impounded close to the Mexico border and my bill would be ...

When a car shows up in an impound lot it's not the police's purview anymore, so unless the police take it from the impound lot into custody there will be no investigation of anything. These impound lots are also NOT run by the police in the US. They are private businesses whose interest is to keep the car as long as possible and run up the tab. You mean we notified you months late ?? OOPS

PIRATENEWS

POLICE RUN THE CAR THEFT CARTEL WITH THEIR JEWISH MAFIA CONTRACTORS, INCLUDING CARLYLE GROUP OWNED BY THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND.

I know, because it happened to me, TWICE. My car was legally parked on my private property. Police towed it without a parking ticket, so I had no court hearing due process or notice. Police said on their radio taperecording that my car was legally parked. When I called police dispatch, the police denied that they towed it. When I called the towing contractor, they denied that they towed it. So I listed it as stolen in NCIC police databse. 2 months later I got a tow bill for $750. My second car was stolen by towtruckers from a car dealership parking lot (without police), and they tried to get title to it without any notice to me (state police give towtruckers free title to any vehicle). When I tracked down who had it, they refused to give me a written invoice, but wanted $1,500 tow bill, caught on videotape. After 3 class action lawsuits in 4 courts, and filing felony criminal charges against the cops, and a special city council meeting, over 100 towing contractors were fired, and the court clerk fired for extortion, theft and fraud for the top secret court docket. But I never got my cars back. My lawyer got 2 guns put to his head and told, "We'll blow your brains out if you don't do what you're told." The Jewish mafiya controls the Italian mob for over 100 years, as we found out in our class actions against Jewish Miller Indistries (owner of 20,000 tow trucks and garbage trucks worldwide and owner of BFI and Waste Management), and according to History Channel.

www.piratenews.org/affidavit-criminal-complaint13jun05.htm

This happens to 100,000s of US citizens every year, with class actions filed in all major cities. Gangsta Govt always loses, unless they put guns to a lawyer's head to drop the slamdunk case.

Police almost never investigate carthefts, because they would have to arrest cops and govt contractors. Mafia-owned insurance companies participate in the scam, no questions asked, just like police-approved arsons (and 9/11 terror bombings by inside-job controlled demolitions). Insurance executives pay themselves $200,000 PER WEEK personal salary PER PERSON, according to Ralph Nader, or more, as in the case of 30x billionaire pedophile 9/11 terrorist Jew Warren Buffet (CIA Franklin Coverup). $40-Billion/year Jewish Miller Industries not only steals 100,000s of cars per year, but is the govt contractor partnered with Controlled Demolitions Inc to bomb OK City fed bldg and WTC, then destroy the evidence in scrapyards and landfills. A&E TV's "Modern Mobs" reported that Miller Industris (BFI and WM) employed dozens of members in Gambino and Genovese Mafias in NY City, stealing millions of taxdollars from at World Trade Center, and were convicted under RICO Act.

CIA/MI6 Carlyle Group uses their towed/stolen cars to bomb US troops in Iraq according to FBI.

All cops are career criminals. That's why I carry a gun and know how to make a citizen's arrest, including arrest of copsters, and know how to win a prosecution pro se when the crooked prosecutors obstruct justice. Now you know why gangsta govt wants to ban all guns, but the ban will only apply to the slaves.
