Thousands of Iranian women have been cautioned over their poor Islamic dress this week and several hundred arrested in the capital Tehran in the most fierce crackdown on what's known as "bad hijab" for more than a decade.
It is the talk of the town. The latest police crackdown on Islamic dress has angered many Iranians - male, female, young and old.

But Iranian TV has reported that an opinion poll conducted in Tehran found 86% of people were in favour of the crackdown - a statistic that is surprising given the strength of feeling against this move.

Police cars are stationed outside major shopping centres in Tehran.

They are stopping pedestrians and even cars - warning female drivers not show any hair - and impounding the vehicles and arresting the women if they argue back.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Yeah, that does suck. It's beginning to sound like Saudi Arabia.

WARNING! JOKE ALERT! THIS IS JUST A JOKE AND DOES NOT REFLECT THE ACTUAL OPINION OF ANYBODY!!!

We got enough nukes to go around...and the nuclear winter would solve global warming.

THIS HAS BEEN A JOKE ALERT. NO ONE ACTUALLY WISHES TO NUKE IRAN OR SAUDI ARABIA. ALL COUNTRIES MENTIONED IN THIS JOKE ARE FICTITIOUS, AND ARE NOT INTENDED TO RESEMBLE ANY ACTUAL COUNTRIES.

There you go again. Since you can't make your point hang on for any length of time you just have to derail the discussion.

What discussion? Now Geezer isn't allowed to make a joke in a thread that doesn't have a discussion? Sometimes I get the feeling that your dislike for him clouds your common sense.

Geezer: thesis
"Thousands of Iranian women have been cautioned over their poor Islamic dress ..." (Iran = bad fanatical country that deserves US hate.)

SignyM: discussion
"It's beginning to sound like Saudi Arabia." (Look here, there are other bad fanatical countries the US likes !")

Geezer: distraction
"We got enough nukes to go around ... and the nuclear winter would solve global warming." (Look - over there ! An unrelated joke ! Pay no attention to my lame-ass thesis !)

What role are you playing, Khyron?

Geezer posted an interesting article, one that I was thinking of posting myself. That doesn't mean he wants a discussion or say that Iran is evil and needs to be stopped, maybe he just wants to make sure people saw what's going on over there at the moment and that it's not cool (that would've been my motivation). If SignyM wants to derail this into a "America's allies do the same" discussion then that's his prerogative, but it doesn't mean Geezer needs to respond to it. Just because SignyM wants to provoke a discussion doesn't mean that there is one.

Besides, in his response Geezer made it quite clear that he isn't a fan of Saudi Arabia either and won't vouch for whatever they do. Is he supposed to defend Saudi Arabia, even if he doesn't think it's worth defending, just so that there can be a discussion about something? Judging by his joke, another reason why there was no discussion was because Geezer in a way already agreed with SignyM's comment.

The one of the poster who wishes there'd be less role-playing.

Are you trying to say that only people who have nothing to add and nothing to say to any post should contribute? That'd make for a really silent board, don't you think?

Or maybe I should use this board as my favorite podium. :claps hands with delight:

No, I'm saying that just because somebody looks for a discussion with somebody it doesn't mean that the other person MUST engage in it.

My point(in response to SignyM's post) was that I don't care for the Saudi's interpretation of Islamic law any more than I do Iran's, hence the joking suggestion that we nuke them all. Iran just happened to be the one that made news.

Here's a question-- in one of the Virginia Tech threads lately, I think, was a suggestion that a very large percentage of folks in America ( somewhere over 90 %, if I remember correctly.) were

sheeple,

blind stupid followers without any independence of character or thought.

What percentage of folks in Iran qualify?

This probably sounds sarcastic, but I am in every way sincere when I ask: Are there some rules writ down in here somewhere about what we can and can't say? Or maybe some form of etiquete beyond the "be civil" message? Again, I'm totaly asking a question that I don't know the answer to. Ya know...these rules if there are any, don't have to be written down. Can anyone educate this poor old sod?

Yeah there is, and although it took me a while, I finally figured out what it is. The unwritten rule of RWED is: Don't be Geezer.
