I'm moving to Michigan. Michigan Highways have just become the Autobahn! Grow all of the pot you want!

http://www.michigan.gov/som/0,1607,7-192--176865--,00.html

BYOB though..... they're not selling any. No cigarettes either, so start buying them from Russia or the Indian Reservations.

In all seriousness though, this is NOT a joke. The Michigan State Government will be shutting down for who knows how long? So... if you have any family members in heavily populated areas, particularly Detriot, wish them luck. Hopefully they've been exercising their right to bear arms, because the limited police force will not be a whole lot of help if things get crazy.

Really shitty news for places like bars that will go out of business because they are unable to restock their inventory according to state law. Don't worry smokers & drinkers.... Wal-Mart will probably buy out all of the bars and smoke shops.

EDITED TO ADD: Heard anything about this Frem? I'm not some dupe who was conned by one of the best hacker pranks pulled on the internet to date, am I?

I notice a lot of the responses say something along line of: the school/hospital/etc may shut down but it doesn't have to ... or while certain functions may shut down you can go somewhere else.

Doesn't provide a whole lot of answers does it? It may or may not be available.

I'm figuring that a lot of that info probably isn't available, and a lot of what is, is not being disclosed at this point. Who knows how long this is going to go on?

It did mention that they're still responsible for paying state taxes, but tax refunds will not be issued durning the shutdown. This could mean that they're thinking that they might be shut down until well after April of next year and/or it could just be refering to the issuance of tax refunds on any tax extentions they've granted this year. Who knows?

I'd think that less information is more at this point. I'm not big on Government secrecy, and if I was a Michigan taxpayer I'd be demanding an explanation to where my damn tax money has been going, but the point is that the State Government is going to be shut down period. Ambiguity is the means by which they will try to minimize panic among the proles until they get it all sorted out.

I just think it's funny that they'll continue welfare payments and they're going to keep small time pot dealers in jail, while anyone in Detroit who wants to pop a cap in 50 people can get away with it because there is a limited police force and no forensics labs, and public schools will suffer if this goes on for more than 16 days. Way to prioritize things.

Umm, Jack...

You mighta missed this thread relative.
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=18&t=30756

Think is, the Gov would have you believe it'd all go to hell without their intervention, but in all truth Government is a problem masquerading as it's own solution - if it wasn't for the supposed necessity of the asinine idea of having to beg the Govs permission to buy or sell a product, to have their express approval for every sale...

Business would continue unchecked.

And in many cases will anyway - if I wanna bottle of something, goddamn, almost every farmer south of me homebrews, and none of em care for the taxman too much to begin with, and smokes ?

I noted a rather BRISK business in smuggling over the WVA-VA-MD border when I was down there, and I am quite sure the "Free Market" (as in, free of government fuckery) will fill in the gap in availability right quickly.

One basic rule of trade is that "Commerce Continues" - hell, even nations under naval blockade manage it, even under sanction, so commerce stopped utterly by a mere lack of government approval ?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, what a ludicrous concept!

As far as total social chaos and breakdown, well, they'd LIKE you to believe that, they'd LIKE you to believe it'd all go to hell in a handbasket without them there to hold all our hands, but you know what ?

I do not believe that is true.

Remember the line from V for Vendetta ?
"I want everyone to remember why. they. need. us!"
Because of course that is not true.

We don't need government, government needs US, willing victims to be exploited, robbed and ordered around like slave chattel, and we drink the kool-aid and sing their praises, don't we ?

Watch, this little tempest in a teapot will amount to generally nothing save a mild panic on behalf of the Kool-Aid guzzling fearful, and in the end might well serve as a damned good example of how MUCH they need US... and how LITTLE we truly need THEM.

We'll see what develops now, won't we ?

I'd like to share your optimism here Frem... I really would. My boss and I tonight have been saying that we hope this happens in Wisconsin too, as the (R)ats and (D)ickheads are about 1 Billion away from agreeing on a budget. Of course the fucks aren't going to quibble over the $0.61 tax per pack of cigarettes (that was confirmed in yesterday's local paper).

I'm buying my shit from Putin when that or the national tax goes in effect, and they can kiss my ass if they don't like it. They'll ship it to me halfway around the world and it will cost me 1/3 of what they charge at the gas station down the street. There's less shit in Russian cigarettes that will kill me anyhow. (Unfortunately, I know from experience they don't taste nearly as plesant)

I'm all for no Gov and seeing how it pans out Frem... I'm just afraid that when Michigan State law and Wisconsin state law (and how many other state and local Governments begin to crumble) that Federal Government will come in and take charge. I just hope the proles behave themselves like self governing human beings when the Government gets weak enough and doesn't give the "law abiding citizens" reason to say "I love Big Brother" and allow Federal Government to come in and blatently overtake the roles of city and state governments.

That's what I'm afraid of. Personally, I don't give a shit that working moms won't have government sponsored child care. And I don't care if kids dont' get free medicaid on my dime either. If you can't raise em, don't breed em. Not Government's place to fix that shit and it isn't my responsibility to fund it.

Let's just make sure Frem that while all of this is going on that it is for a better, stronger America and not a means to Communism.

Let the FedGov just waltz in and start takin over ?
IN MICHIGAN ? bwahahaha!

You sorely underestimate our stubborn, self-reliant asshole factor here... maybe not in Detroit or Lansing, but good heavens out here in the boonies they just aren't scared enough to let it happen.

Remember that horrific blackout which caused so much chaos a while back ?

This community prettymuch laughed it off, our Meijers down the street fired up their heavy diesel generators, marked down the perishables and put every battery and flashlight they had out on the floor, then went and dragged out the wilderness and camping stuff and put THAT on the shelves when the batteries sold out.

Although busy, it was orderly, and fact is most of those folk were just topping off, nothing trains you for self-sufficiency like a brutal michigan winter, although we haven't really had one since I moved here, old habits die hard.

Folks with meat that wouldn't keep rolled out the hibachis and we had a freakin town-wide cookout, no sense hoarding what wasn't gonna keep anyhows, and that was helpful, if unnecessary, to feed folks without power, thus extending the duration of their canned goods supply.

No chaos, no panic, no crime wave - just as their won't be any with this shutdown, if a total loss of all electrical power for several days didn't faze em in the least, I don't see exactly how loss of a few government services is gonna do it neither.

They WANT us to be scared - to me, that alone is reason enough not to be.

Good for you Frem... Glad to hear it.

My boss is betting me that this will be over by Thursday at the latest. I'm hoping for 3 months or more at least just to see what happens. All this excitement for no reason if it only lasts 3 days.

What do you think?

I wouldn't give it 12 hours - you'll see, when their own ass is on the line, and the concept of folks realizing just how little the Gov actually does FOR them in spite of it's rapacious taxes starts to sink in, they'll move double damn quick.

And they'll do it by jacking up taxes, mark my words, further putting the burden of their own incompetence on us.

Fucking insane - you know, we could pull JUST ONE ship of the line out of the persian gulf and on it's FUEL COST ALONE, probably balance more than half the state budgets with a little cutting here and there.

The lunatics are running the asylum, I tellya.

So Frem... in your estimates, I was right about Michigan becoming the Autobahn, and Michigan being a good place to try your hand at pot farming....... assuming you get it all out of your system in 12 hours?

Meh, try FOUR hours, and yep, they jacked taxes, bout what I figured.

Apparently they reached some kinda deal at circa 4:18am - for all the non-stop flaming of Jenny by the rabidly extreme right wing newspapers that are all we have here, her problem is that she's too damn nice, and expects other people to do their job - and doesn't comprehend why they wouldn't, or why they would sabotage the job they are given... what she oughta do, ought to have done starting a couple years back, is start putting some boot up some asses, but coulda shoulda woulda, I adore the lady, but I just don't think she's MEAN enough to be a career politician.

Apparently she submitted a basic framework to em eight months ago and they just sat on it and did jack diddly shit, and while they're all culpable the most guilty of em seems to be that asshole Mike Bishop, who's issue seems to be blockading any measure not initiated by his party be it good or ill, cause he's a rabid party extremist and if nothing gets done, Jenny is gonna catch the blame thanks to the papers all being hard-right without even a pretense of fairness.
(They're also racist and anti-union too, I speak specifically of the Detroit "free" Press, and the Detroit "news" - just so you know who imma flaming.)

The Dems on the other hand, grabbed their pork in greedy fists and refused to let go, thinking they could just soak us poor peons a little more, not thinking that the harder you squeeze a handful of sand, the less you wind up holding.

Bear in mind also that them fucking Casinos still owe us about fifty million, but Cox is too busy running party fundraisers from his office and shilling for McCain till it become so blatant that McCain is a lunatic that he had to jump ship to save his own skin while holding up such "victories" as busting a *snicker* CAN deposit smuggling ring, and trying desperately to prevent the moral horror of having booze AND nudity under a single roof (you know, like they have over in canada, where all the clubbers go and spend their money instead, thus depriving michigan of it..) cause it somehow offends him.

But the Casinos reneging on their agreements somehow does not, nor does their practice of immediately ejecting in forceful and humilating fashion anyone who actually dares win any money, even at nickle slots, small wonder that michiganders prefer to spend their money in windsor instead...

I still hang my head in shame for having voted for this lowlife sumbitch, but that's a mistake I wont make twice.

I swear, the only thing worse than a Michigan Democrat... is a Michigan Republican, and barely just cause it's six pence one way and half a dime the other.

Much as I adore Jenny, mostly for reasons that have zilch to do with her performance as Governor, the Dems don't have shit to replace her with, and the Repubs, HA!... they tried to pawn off DEVOS on us, a guy so pathetic and corrupt that even the hard-right newspapers turned on him, who got booed out of his own town trying to hold a campaign rally, and got fully obliterated in a debate he didn't dare even hold in Michigan, to which he showed up hung over and disheveled.

Is THIS the best we can do ?

We're really scraping the bottom of the barrel here, it seems, even our reps are pathetic, Conyers is a gutless pansy, Dingell is a madman, and Levin is up to his ass in AIPACs pocket diggin for more.

If I *had* to reccomend someone, anyone, it'd be Warren, that being Warren Evans, of the Wayne County Sheriffs dept, Internet Crimes Task Force.

Strange that it may seem to see ME fronting for a cop, Warren is a stone-cold-by-the-book type of dude, who has zero tolerance for fudging or procedural fuckery that can hose a case, yet retains a very empathetic and humane demeanor and outlook, he's certainly ruthless enough to DO the job, but I highly doubt he would want it.

4 hours and 18 minutes, huh?

Government never ever ever gets anything done in 4 hours and 18 minutes. There is no way I could have ever won that bet..... sigh. Oh well...

Just goes to show what those assholes can get accomplished when they're under the gun and they face the one time in their career where they might actually have to answer for their actions, or lack thereof.

Disgusting people, politicians and lawyers. I don't know how you get so close to them without becoming assimilated by their toxic slime.

Frem, you hear anything about the sales tax on services? I'd like to know how much more money I'm going to be hemorrhaging in the future.

"I don't know how you get so close to them without becoming assimilated by their toxic slime."

Pure hatred, Jack, pure hatred - just like my other "work" in order to do the job effectively without being mentally and emotionally crushed by it, you have to be a pretty nasty kinda fellow in the first place, or a serious asshole - like I said before, you'd prolly be pretty good at it yourself, cause like me, you'd never for an instant forget who and what you're dealing with.

Deepgirl ?

"The sales tax would not apply to tickets to sporting and entertainment events or accounting services. But businesses and consumers would pay the tax on ski tickets, administrative and investment services, consultants, warehousing and storage, interior design, commercial landscaping and janitorial services, among other services."

Basically every damn thing except what the politicians get kickbacks off of, as expected.

Anyhows, as I said, a tempest in a teapot, a chain yank for the kool-aid guzzling fearful masses in order to make them think we need all that expensive rigamarole so much.

And here's a pleasant little thought for you - most of the price of a pack of smokes is excise tax, yes ?

And yet when sales tax is applied to the purchase, it's applied to the entire retail price including that excise, so in essence you are paying a tax, ON a tax, isn't that nice ?

"Tax his land, Tax his bed,
Tax the table at which he's fed.

Tax his tractor, Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes are the rule.

Tax his cow, Tax his goat,
Tax his pants, Tax his coat.

Tax his ties, Tax his shirt,
Tax his work, Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco, Tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.

Tax his cigars, Tax his beers,
If he cries, then tax his tears.

Tax his car, Tax his gas,
Find other ways to tax his ass

Tax all he has then let him know
That you won't be done till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers, then tax him some more,
Tax him till he's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he's laid.

Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom..."

When he's gone, do not relax,
Its time to apply the inheritance tax!"

If people really took the time to add up just how little of their money they actually keep when the Gov is done with em, we'd have a revolt on our hands.
