The other day at work, our conveyor belt got jammed, and I took it upon myself to climb into it and un-jam it. Problem was, some bottle of slippery whatever-it-was had opened up and in two steps I found myself slipping backwards, then falling forward.
As usually happens with me in times of physical action, time stretched- a split second allowed the following thoughts:
"Oh s**t- no way! I can't BELIEVE I'm falling!! This f***ing sucks! Watch- I'll fall all the way to the basement and break my wrist or something!! Wait- if I spread out, I'll catch on something...I wonder if this will hurt later? Ooop- left hand impact-"
So, the fall was quick, I stopped myself from sliding at all, and ended up with just a cut on my shin to show for it.
But my inner control freak was mad at me- how could I LET this happen? Big martial artist..in shape, blah blah!!
See, these little things remind me that control is an illusion (like she said in Jurassic Park).

Anybody wanna run with this ball?

I guess you blame the belt (and your employer) for violating your human right not to fall. Can't be your own fault for being so stupid as to try and fix it yourself without due regard for all the possible dangers.

If you'd been injured you would have sued your boss for something that could have been avoided if you just not committed the bad act. Kind of like the terrorist types complaining about being treated bad in jail.

Still glad your ok...

Gravity...its all well and good until your falling into the basement...then we all wish we had something better to rely on.

Naw, I fell a few years back and hurt my knee somethin' fierce at work- but THAT was just my own stupid fault, so I ate the doctor bills ( better w/ketchup).

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

But when I fall in slow-mo, I actually gain control of the situation. (Dang. I can't believe I'm falling. And at a party, too. I hope I don't tear my clothes. But if I put out my hand and roll, it should all be OK. and... TA DA! Now ... for my NEXT trick....!) So it actually feeds my no-so-secret control-freak.

First off glad you're ok. But why so critical of yourself? Sounds to me like you just caught yourself in time not to do any real damage. I mean look at it this way. Had your stuntman senses not been so keen, you could have actually ended up in the basement on your back going...

"What the hell just happened? Why am I on the floor with all my co-workers looking on at me all concerned?"

Could have been much worse fella......It's all in the reflexes

Done many a silly thing like that myself. Often it's not until I'm trying to sleep later that night that I actually have the time to think about what a stupid risk I just took and how bloody reckless I had been.

First time I went snowboarding some seven years back, within a couple days of learning how to snowboard, I decided to try a run with a jump on it! Stoopidest thing I ever did do! Landed buckled head first into some pretty compacted snow. Friends came rushing over looking really concerned. I assured them I was fine but they were all very shaken. It wasn't until later than night that I thought about the damage I could've done to myself had I sustained a head injury. Daft. Really daft.

Thing is I did so many stupid things as a kid and got away with it that every now and then, that sense of invinciblity comes back....
