Quote:

Spanish Pipedream
by John Prine

She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal
Well she pressed her chest against me
About the time the juke box broke
Yeah, she gave me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke

Chorus:
Blow up your T.V. throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find Jesus on your own

Well, I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
For I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve
Well, she danced around the bar room and she did the hoochy-coo
Yeah she sang her song all night long, tellin' me what to do

Repeat chorus:

Well, I was young and hungry and about to leave that place
When just as I was leavin', well she looked me in the face
I said "You must know the answer."
"She said, "No but I'll give it a try."
And to this very day we've been livin' our way
And here is the reason why

We blew up our T.V. threw away our paper
Went to the country, built us a home
Had a lot of children, fed 'em on peaches
They all found Jesus on their own.

Just sayin'.

MMmmmmmm. Country song goodness. Not.

Your tagline made more sense. Lyrics to Queen songs make more sense.

I think the song is just a product placement for Georgia.

But fortunately I have the key to escape reality

Well, I sat down in my closet with all my overalls

I dreamed the police heard
Everything I thought... what then?
Well I went to court
And the judge's name was Hoffman

Ah but fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile

I was just goofin'. I was near a television last night and was accidentally exposed to CNN. It reaffirmed by deep abiding hatred for the medium. And reminded me of the song.

'Illegal Smile' is one of my favorites as well.

It's cool if you don't like country though. My girlfriend certainly doesn't. For me, it's one of the two bookends that comprise my favorite genres of pop music, namely old-school punk and insurgent country. I see a common thread between the two myself.

Don't be dissing Queen, they're one of my favorite bands. Love the lyrics to Death on Two Legs.

Words and music by Freddie Mercury
You suck my blood like a leech
You break the law and you preach
Screw my brain till it hurts
You've taken all my money
And you want more
Misguided old mule with your pig headed rules
With your narrow minded cronies
Who are fools of the first division
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart of your own
Kill joy bad guy big talking small fry
You're just an old barrow boy
Have you found a new toy to replace me?
Can you face me?
But now you can kiss my ass goodbye
Feel good are you satisfied?
Do you feel like suicide?
(I think you should)
Is your conscience all right
Does it plague you at night?
Do you feel good feel good?
You talk like a big business tycoon
You're just a hot air balloon
So no one gives you a damn
You're just an overgrown schoolboy
Let me tan your hide
A dog with disease
You're the king of the 'sleaze'
Put your money where your mouth is
Mister know-all
Was the fin on your back
Part of the deal? (Shark)
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart (you never did) of your own
(Right from the start)
Insane you should be put inside
You're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride
Should be made unemployed
Then make yourself null and void
Make me feel good I feel good

Here is one I like

Rocket Launcher - Bruce Cockburn

Lyrics:

Here comes the helicopter -- second time today
Everybody scatters and hopes it goes away
How many kids they've murdered only God can say
If I had a rocket launcher...I'd make somebody pay

I don't believe in guarded borders and I don't believe in hate
I don't believe in generals or their stinking torture states
And when I talk with the survivors of things too sickening to relate
If I had a rocket launcher...I would retaliate

On the Rio Lacantun, one hundred thousand wait
To fall down from starvation -- or some less humane fate
Cry for Guatemala, with a corpse in every gate
If I had a rocket launcher...I would not hesitate

I want to raise every voice -- at least I've got to try
Every time I think about it water rises to my eyes.
Situation desperate, echoes of the victims cry
If I had a rocket launcher...Some son of a bitch would die

Like to play this too....

Laugh if you must, but imma alumni member of the Society for the Eradication of Television, although somewhat apostate via Firefly.

Just somethin about the ole idiot box has always annoyed me, I get a really flaky kinda aggressive reaction when lied to, and TV commercials really set it off in the extreme, I dunno why.

Ahhh... is there such a thing? If not, we should start it. The whole television thing is becoming an issue with me and my girlfriend. I've been away from the hive mind for long enough now that I seriously can't fucking stand being in the same room with an operating television. But she still uses it for her "down time". She doesn't understand why I just can't ignore it. But the truth of the matter is, no one can. If the goddamned thing is on, and you can hear or see it, it's infecting your mind, subconsciously or otherwise.

Of course, blaming the medium is somewhat disingenuous. It's the how it's used that is so repulsive. Regardless, I really can't take it anymore. It's a constant onslaught on perception, twisting and mutilating values and performing its primary function of 'manufacturing desire'. Fuck that.

Dear holy havanna panatellas... I thought *I* was the only one who felt that way!

"I've been away from the hive mind for long enough now that I seriously can't fucking stand being in the same room with an operating television."

YES!

Especially if it's turned up loud enough to prevent quiet conversation in it's vicinity!

Like.. fingernails on a blackboard right down the middle of my soul and all I wanna do is pull an Elvis or flee.

I hate the damned thing, to be honest.

There is good tv out there though, and enough of it that you can actually piss your life away on the good stuff, that is actually challenging if you engage it.

From freaks and geeks, firefly, The Wire, Oz, Rome, Six Feet Under, Dexter, Weeds, Wonderfalls, The Riches...

they at least have made me feel as if I haven't pissed away enough hours to have spent my whole adolescence in front of a T.V.

......maybe that's the subtle danger of quality TV though, I get to rationalize my own passivity.

On the bright side, I've been spoiled for most network television, and couldn't relate any commercial to you.

If I had wanted to engage a Poster specifically, I would have quoted their post as I usually do. You happened to be the third Poster , besides Sarge and Frem, to post their distaste of T.V. on a forum based on a T.V. show. I found that more than passing strange.
That you mistook my missive as a personal attack against you alone speaks more to you than I, IMHO.

For many of us it wasn't. I actually have the slightest tinge of guilt that, after "Train Job", I never actually watched it on TV. Just couldn't stand the way the commercial breaks spoiled the flow. So I downloaded each episode the day after it was broadcast.

But, yeah, it is kind of funny. And the irony of griping about television on a message board celebrating a television series is not lost on me. Though the fate of Firefly, for me, was the final straw, and convinced me to never waste my time on the medium again.

If there was anything on it but the mindless drivel that there is, Firefly being a noteable exception, my opinion might change.

That bein said, the FremGirl has utterly forbidden me to ever buy a plan including the Discovery channel, cause she'd need a crowbar to get me off the thing..

Gotta agree with you on that. I never considered John Prine to be "country". Maybe "folk" or "Americana", but I never thought of him as a country singer.

Favorite John Prine song (and it seems so very appropriate for today, even though it's going on 40 years old now...):

Quote:

Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore
© John Prine

Well I just read Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I'd tell her how good I feel.

Chorus:
But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
They're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.

Well, I went to the bank this morning
And the cashier he said to me,
"If you join the Christmas club
We'll give you ten of them flags for free."
Well, I didn't mess around a bit
I took him up on what he said.
And I stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife's forehead.

Repeat Chorus:

Well, I got my window shield so filled
With flags I couldn't see.
So, I ran the car upside a curb
And right into a tree.
By the time they got a doctor down
I was already dead.
And I'll never understand why the man
Standing in the Pearly Gates said...

"But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
We're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more."
