The Alliance said they were gonna waltz through Serenity Valley. And we choked 'em with those words. We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

It doesn't surprise me that Aljazeera would use the actions of one US soldier to smear the entire US military. It does surprise me that so many unwittingly distribute their propaganda.

Just to make Kirkules happy:

Al Jazeera seems to be no more bias than BBC, but hey any not pro US position is propaganda.

And if there is a troop shortage, perhaps closing bases and redeploying troops from where they are not wanted should be a consideration.

As some one that has been to Okinawa dozens of times I can say there really is no compelling reason to venture out in town. The only people that will smile at you are the bar owners. Prices are pretty much the same as they are in Japan despite being pretty slummy or rural. It really is very different from Japan. I usually just chilled at Kaneda Air Base when I had to go there.

As a matter of fact I ventured out only once when I was there and it was a HUGE mistake. I will spare you the details but the story does have a name:

This is the same Japanese who procured up to a quarter million "comfort women" from China and Korea for their troops during WWII?

So the 14 year old had it coming then ?

Mind you this is sadly the mindset the Iraq discussions have taken lately.

And...the same Japanese that raped and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of men, women & children in Nanking & Shanghai & The Philippines? But for THEM..it was POLICY! This incident in Okinawa is the action of one sick individual...has nothing to do with US military or their policies.

Just noting the phenomenom of selective outrage as practiced by the Japanese. They're all so upset about the actions of one individual (for which the US has apologized even before guilt has been established), yet still refuse, 60 years later, to apologize for institutionalized rape on a massive scale. What you got here is politicians playing politics.

Yup. You have ONE person, who HAPPENS to be an American, and HAPPENS to be in the military, who is also, allegedly, a rapist. It's not an American policy, or a military policy; it's one fucked-up dude, who - if guilty - really does desperately need to be shot in the head.

Actually the point I was trying to make

The locals do not want the American military presence, for many reason ( this wasn't the only rape, other crimes, pollution, ecological disruption, etc )

and the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are meanwhile suffering manpower shortages so acute that you have been force to strip your national guard away from its primary mission, as well as compel people who have fulfilled their contracts and were leaving the military to stay in...

Downsize or close bases in Japan, Korea, and other places which do not want these troops there and you solve both problems...

As for the one fucked up dude... it was clear to me serving in my country's military that any interaction was a reflection on both my service and my country. Now, it is up to politics to decide how this reflection continues. I hope as before this guy is handed over to Japan for trial.

In addition the behavior ( trend ) of troops in this region needs to be examined, and steps taken to prevent further reoccurance.

I agree with that.......why are we still in Okinawa anyhow? It's been 63 years since we occupied that island and Japan. Last I saw of it, Marlon Brando was acting a great part as Sakini, always outsmarting the bumbling US military in Teahouse of the August Moon. There was the Karate Kid 2 adventure there also, but no need to harp on that.

Sure. If they're Immortal.

Are these the same US troops that rounded up Japanese Americans into interment camps?

Did the Al Jazeera article say that is was policy? I didn't see that in there.

Cluttered as anyone else's

But that is the point isn't it. Geezer was posing the point where do they get off with the wrongs they committed in their history being self righteous in protesting the problems of today.

If the world was to paint every country by the actions of its past.... nobody comes out looking squeaky clean. Some come out looking worse than others, and some equally bad.
