Bicyclist sought in Times Square bombing
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/06/times.square/index.html

Seems like a revamp of Weather Underground tactics aimed at the infrastructure of an organisation rather than it's personnel - still, someone's gonna have to clean and patch the mess.

Not sure exactly WHAT my opinion on it is, at this point, I gotta think about it a while...

"but when you talk about destruction, don't you know that you can count me out....in" - Lennon

harkens back to the "Power to the People" and "Take it to the streets" hay-day of my youth...

times change -so do attitudes, and maybe i'm getting soft in my old age, but something about civilian uprisings still reassures me that some of us refuse to be led my the nose...

I'm not sure if this incident was justified, but it smacks of civil disobedience - a precursor to revolution - which to some is not such a bad thing.

The eastern world, it is exploding
Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’
You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’

But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

The Alliance said they were gonna waltz through Serenity Valley. And we choked 'em with those words. We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

I'm with you. Been warning folks about bicyclists for years.

And don't give me any of the 'bicycles don't kill people crap'. We all know how it works with the peddling and the tight shorts and the helmets, its a recipe for terror.

Now that's funny! And yes, I imagine there are a few terrorized folk when I put on my tight shorts and helmet. My wife is one of them. :)

Bicyclists don't kill people; people kill bicyclists.

Wait, that's not right. Oh, wait - yes it is!

Indeed.
Still thinkin on it - I've spent many a commentary on how important hope is to people, and how it's lack triggers incidents like this, makes them all but inevitable, and how adding more force and repression accellerates the process like squeezing a handful of sand ever tighter till in the end you're holding nothing at all.

I think the powers that be can only avert things now by positive action, rather than negative, by offering some real, believable signs of hope to the people as a whole, but given their conduct in the last decade or so, I don't hold out much faith in that happening.

Look, for 26 years, I have seen this coming, and tried and tried to change the course of these events, only to find my efforts less and less effective over the years as they grind to a seemingly inevitable conclusion, so what would you have me do ?

How should I feel about watching a slow motion train wreck I could not prevent even knowing two and a half decades in advance not only how it unfolds, but where the pieces will land ?

About all I have left now is the notion to bunker down and hope not to get scored as a collateral of the process - for me this is nightmare come reality, and much as it might seem that I would support some sign of the people as a whole not being completely cowed, I don't think anyone really realizes just how wobbly those ivory towers are, or just how awful the bang could be should they come down.

Fact is, the mission WAS accomplished. Major operations had come to a successful close. Much to the shagrin of those on the Left and those who hate America.

Not part of major operations. And , to be more specific, the carrier isn't a part of what's going on there now. The banner was for their crew, not a message for all the military. Yes, more needs to be done, but the heavy liftin part of taking down major components of the Iraqi miliatry, as far as those on the ship are concerened, they did their job. And did it very well. Mission accomplished.

Much to the chagrin of those on the Wrong - er, I mean "right" - and those who can't even spell the word "chagrin".

I don't "hate America" - I hate the fascists who are running it right now - and running it into the goddamn ground. I hate the people like you, who would just as soon wipe your ass with the Constitution, and then want to wrap themselves in the flag to show their "patriotism". The only thing in the world that could make me burn an American flag would be a law forbidding it. This would be purely a protest on my part, because burning the flag doesn't destroy the Constitution for which it stands, but outlawing that same protest is surely one more step toward burning that very Constitution.

I'm done with you, Craptor. I simply refuse to argue with someone who couldn't spell "cat" if you fucking spotted him the "c" and the "t".
Oh, I know - I can hear it already: "Bad spelling isn't any indicator of intelligence." You know who says that? People who are both bad at spelling, and not intelligent. In other words, STUPID PEOPLE. People like you.

Intelligence isn't just a measure of what you know; it's a measure what YOU CAN LEARN. The fact that you've been around the planet this long, and still can't spell your fucking name without looking at your driver's license, tells me that you are simply beneath me, in every possible connotation of the phrase.

I guess it explains why you look up so much to Bush - besides the fact that you're on your knees in front of him to begin with, I mean. You look at Bush and actually see someone you think of as a "smart" person. I look upon him the way I would a well-meaning but ultimately retarded child, with pity for his station in life and pity for the fact that he is just never going to be any smarter than he already is.

Appears to me Arc doesn't know much about Anarchists...

First and foremost, historically, they're really, really terrible at actually blowing anything but themselves successfully - go read up on The Dynamite Terror for more info on that, they're just NO good at it, and never have been.

Somehow the idea of some incompetent nincompoop lobbing a bomb at me that almost asssuredly would have gone off during construction were it effectively functional doesn't exactly frighten me.

Contrast that to having your apartment and possessions torn to shreds by an overeager bunch of state-sponsored jackboots, and being hauled away and "arrested for resisting arrest" and then held without bail for two years worth of postponements till the state has utterly destroyed your life, relationship, career and education, and then dumps you out on your ear without so much as an "oops." - as happened to my buddy Drake, who decided he didn't much like America after that and moved on out to Iceland.

His "Crime" ?

A stiff letter to the editor of a local newsrag about their positions on drug legalisation, apparently they didn't realize he was a freakin health nut and did not partake of intoxicants himself.

I dunno about you, but in this day and age the latter is far more plausible, and common, than the former, and more frightening because of it.

The only terrorists that strike fear into me, are the ones running this country.

Thanks, Frem - the more I hear from you, the more I find myself saying, "Exactly! Fremmie GETS IT!" I might not call myself an Anarchist (at least not just yet), but I find myself at least thumbing through the brochures... ;)

Out of curiousity Fremdfirma, what exactly were you "right" about? Since we don't know the motivations of the person who set off the bomb yet, aren't you jumping to conclusions? I mean, obviously you default to the "anarchy" angle, but couldn't it just have been some rich, white kid from the Upper West Side playing Truth or Dare? Unless, that is, you know something that we don't about this bombing...

estead, a while back I pointed out that if things continued on the vein they were, with less and less hope of fixing many of our current problems via official channels, that some day soon americans would resort to...

A - making nihilist last stands on a foreclosed property.
(happened, in houston)

B - active sabotage and terrorism against corporations by americans.
(happened, at Paypal HQ)

C - americans blowing up apparatus of the state.
(incident in question)

I sincerely hope that I am wrong about how bad it could possibly get, since the idea of another Oklahoma City doesn't exactly fill my heart with warm fuzzies, and I am also concerned that the folk who for whatever reason are doing this stuff, are playing right into the hands of an administration just waiting for a good enough excuse.

I wasn't predicting by reason, but simply historical pattern when things get bad enough that people lose faith in making change through nonviolent means.

Thing is, most folk confuse anarchy and chaos, much as I despise the status quo, the idea of a total fragmentation of our society and the severing of the social bonds that hold us together as a people with or without Government involvement just plain fills me with horror.

Imma Kropotkinist, and also of the belief that before people as a whole can function effectively within an anarchic society they would have to "grow up" mentally, socially, and emotionally a little more than they already are, cause for all our civilisation and technology, from a socio-emotive perspective we're still painting on the cave walls.

We don't need to demolish Government, simply outgrow it.
