Don't know if this has been posted yet. If what this guy's saying about bootlegging is true though, maybe I should forestall my plans for becoming a librarian and start cigarette-running. Looks to be quite the racket.

Well, maybe it will encourage people to die less often from Lung Cancer?

Are New Yorkers aware that they are free to leave? We have a lot of excess real estate here in Florida, and cigarettes are only $3-$4 a pack.

I don't smoke, never have. I've had a family member die from smoking, and still I think it's wrong for the Gov't to hyper tax something which is legal.

It's only 9 bucks a pack in New York if you're a dumb enough New Yorker to pay 9 bucks a pack. The only reason I'm not buying my cigarettes from Putin and his lovely new soon to be wife is that I can still get buy one, get one packs of menthols for just about the price I was able to get them for when I first started smoking back in '97. Sure, they're not my favorite Newports, but until the price gets high enough that I can buy American made cigarettes that fell off a truck on the black market in the local area, my other options have versions of Newports that are inferrior to those that I can get at the smoke shop, and the 2fers on Kool or Camel are better than those. At this point, the risk to reward ratio isn't right for me to do it, but the second WI or US raises those taxes another buck a pack (or 50 cents a pack in my case), I'm not buying through an outfit that will give the extra money to the extortionists anymore. Raise it up to 9 bucks a pack like in New York and I'm sure there will be no problem buying cigarettes locally from your friendly neighborhood criminals.

Thanks for putting more money in their pockets US Gov. They really do have a tough time of it.

It's called free market, and although they may have made rediculous laws restricting us from searching out the best deal on a legal product, I'm sure as hell not going to feel guilty about "breaking" them.

My financial advice for this column is if you can buy stocks of Russian Marlboro, get them now before they go up.

Meh, it's around $12 (or just under £6) per packet in the UK. Still not high enough, though, IMHO.

It's pointless to try to reason with the hypocrites my man. While they run the gambit of the infinite amount of things that you can do to yourself that are going to ensure that you don't live until you're 100 years old, it's just really easy to single out smoking.

The truth is, we will die earlier, and a majority of us will cost much less on insurance plans than those of us outliving us by 10, 20, 30 years or more and undergoing procedures, surgeries, hospital stays and being pumped full of pills that we will never live long enough to need to do. Who's the real drain on the economy?

Meanwhile.... beacuse of the politics involved, we will unfortunately be subsidizing their kids healthcare with our smoking because they keep buying a bunch of shit they don't need and putting themselves further into debt instead of taking care of their own problems (kids).

Yeah... so what? I smoke. I also live well within my means and have enough saved up to pay off my part of the national debt as well. Sell that plasma TV on eBay and pay for your own spawn's healthcare. And for christsake people teach your kids a thing or two about money that you obviously never learned.
