Hopefully the Serenity film reels were not involved again this time as well. That might put a damper on the shindigs this month.

FLORALBUNNY

Woke up to news of the fire this morning.

First thing I thought was, "Well, since they
didn't save the original set, at least I don't
have to worry about it being burned up."

Then they said the video vault was on fire,
but that a) it wasn't films and b) none of it
wasn't reconstructable ... I felt relieved
but also wondered if it was all so expendable
why it was in a vault and why relays of personnel
were carrying the contents to safety.

I think a lot of the precious stuff is stored
offsite and in duplicate.

Was amused at reports that tourists were lined
up for the usual tours this morning even as
the smoke rose like a visual effect in a disaster flick.

3:00 USPDT now the word "film" is used in news report
but an exec is not sounding very worried.

Ron Meyer, President and Chief Operating Officer at Universal Studios, said that between 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were in the video vault, but there are duplicates stored in a different location.

The videos included every film that Universal has produced and footage from television series including "Miami Vice" and "I Love Lucy."

“We were really lucky today.” Meyer said. “Nothing irreplaceable was lost.”

Seems likely it was destroyed, but let's hope their redundancy system is up to date and well protected.

It was reported that all reels were duplicated in other storage facilities. But I'm confident the insurance claim will be most profitable.

Is it technically possible now to make digital copies of film, at 100% resolution?

For example, a typical DVD VOB/MPG is only 10% of the quality of a 720x480 videocam DV AVI capture, and that's at 100% quality. Film has much more resolution than Hi-Def TV.

5 minutes of 720x480 AVI video requires about 5GB file storage, the size of a single-sided DVD. A single frame capture is about 1MB.

A single medium-res photo by a small digital camera is at least 8MB. NTSC video has 30 frames per second, interlaced (actually 15 frames per second). Film has 24 frames per second (?).

1 hour of film would have 86,400 individual photos/frames. At 8MB per frame, that's 691,200MB, or about 700GB per hour.

So I wonder how large a theoretical video file would be at 100% film quality? Are there any "super DVDs" that can handle over 2TB of storage capacity?
