Study Says 'Gaydar' Is Real

By WILLIAM WEIR
Courant.com
August 21, 2008

Not only does "gaydar" exist, suggests a study out of Tufts University, but it can work pretty fast.

Some people say they can tell the sexual orientation of folks with little information, and now a study gives them data to back up their claims.

Published in July's Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, the study claims that people could guess fairly accurately ("better than chance") whether men were gay or straight by looking at photos of their faces.

For the study, 15 undergraduate students, both male and female, were shown photos of faces of 90 men, evenly divided between gay and straight. The photos were taken from Internet personal ads and from Facebook. The study's lead author, graduate student Nicholas Rule, says men were used in this study for convenience, because they have a greater presence on the Internet than women.

The researchers found that subjects could accurately determine in 50 milliseconds — one-twentieth of a second — whether the men were gay or straight about 60 percent of the time. Rule says all the subjects were accurate 55 percent to 70 percent of the time.

I'd make some crack about PirateNews being gay, but that would be an insult to the gay community.

Hello,

This seems like the most rediculous study of the year. I'm surprised it got funded, since it has no actual scientific import. And I'm not sure how it relates to the claptrap posted near Piratenews' signature.

Can someone enlighten me? Someone who reasons in a linear fashion?

The problem with using Gaydar is that it works on the same brain frequency as your standard government mind control device. If you wear your standard tin foil beanie under the hat to prevent mind control it totally shuts down your Gaydar. You could accidentally walk into a gay bar and dance with three or four guys before you even realize they're gay.

Only the mos deny its existance, for some reason.

Or at least that's what they claim on FFF.

Hello,

But Piratenews, even if 'Gaydar' is real, you've failed to answer the underlying question that would make it important to the scientific community.

Which is: So the fuck what?

--Anthony

Edited to add:

P.S. Did you say 'mos deny its existence? The only people I ever heard the term 'Gaydar' from were homosexual men, commenting on their ability to detect other homosexual men. You're the first straight guy I've ever heard talk about this phenomenon with any excitement.

I'll second that "So the fuck what?" as I don't see how it matters.

Being unburdened with most of the hangups and fears of most folk toward sexuality, apparently I ping back gender-neutral to "Gaydar" according to my friends of that bent, who consider me just a little cruel since I'll flirt with anything that moves, although Dan, sweet talking the sheep was a joke, yanno...

I do tend to get the odd pass thrown at me by men, latest of which was a very subtle fellow also shopping in the dairy section, he was pretty sauve but dudes just don't ring my bell, so I let him down easy and moved on - such things don't scare or offend me, and I think that is the key.

I think there really is such a thing as "Gaydar", and it's based on a whole lot of conscious and subconsious behavior cues, like how one reacts to a member of a certain sex brushing the edges of their personal space, initial reaction, eye movement and position, all the same things used in other behavioral studies, so it's not without precedent either.

Since I do not react to other people unless I've pegged them as a threat, a lot of folk take that lack of reaction for potential interest, and if a polite dismissal doesn't do for it, boring them to death* most certainly will.

So yeah, there's such a thing, but I don't see how it really *matters* to anyone, should it ?

Okay , but what I really want to know are your feelings about 'Catdar'...

That seems to work...What sort of mechanisms are at work , and why are they so danged smart ?

That would've been the more interesting study...

Limp-wristedness and loafer-lightness , with the thumbs turned wrong-way on the hips...

Not a lot of mystery there...

Gays deny it's existance to heteros.

Gays rely on it's existance to find more mos.

It does exist. You, for example, have excellent gaydar. Every time you ask a woman out...she turns out to be gay.

Catdar, eh ?

Well, as for ability to detect cat owners, just look for the cat hair on the pants cuffs, hehehe.

I swear, Ghoster can practically explode fur across the room, and sheds even worse when nervous - after weighing her, and batting away the cloud, the vet asked me "Is that NORMAL for this cat ?!"

As for smart, I couldn't tellya, but damn me sometimes mine are a little TOO smart for their own good, Kallista had a habit of getting into rooms even though the door was closed, and we couldn't figure out how, originally.

She didn't see me watching that one time - see, we have french lever doors inside, and she would jump, grab the handle in her paws and hang from it, then kick off the doorframe with her back paws to push it open, and once inside would headbutt it closed behind her.

I swear, if they had opposable thumbs, we'd be in real trouble.

Again...this post may be a little gay.....

However, people know if someone is gay by the way they act.

Some tips if you are trying to hide being gay:

- Women, combat boots, short hair, 200 extra lbs and a sneer...not a good look. Especially if you are NOT in the military...

- Guys, swishing about, mincing about, and/or fruitifying your speech....equally not a good look.

Heheh, Im just being a dick. Which is apropo for this thread I guess.

SINGATE

Last time I checked 60% is only slightly better than 50%, which is only a marginally better than flipping a coin or randomly guessing. Hardly conclusive proof of anything. That being said, some people do seem to have a knack for knowing when a person is gay even without the more obvious cues, but it is by no means a universal human ability.

As for the term "gaydar" I think it's been around a little longer than 10 years. I seriously doubt it was coined by a TV show but if it was I'd place a bet on Seinfeld. That kind of term is right up their alley.
