Once the decline gets under way, production will drop (conservatively) by 3% per year, every year. War, terrorism, extreme weather and other "above ground" geopolitical factors will likely push the effective decline rate past 10% per year, thus cutting the total supply by 50% in 7 years.

"Pathetic. All the green and the blue sky. They told me this planet was ugly, but this has got to be one of the ugliest crap holes in the entire universe."

Ever wonder why it is, w/ the really BIG global catastophies, they're ALWAYS 10-15 yrs down the road from present day? I think AlGore said we have 10 yrs to live , due to global warming. And yet, somehow, magically, total global meltdown is always averted! Imagine that.

Wonder why that is, I do.

Correct. No problem which couldn't be, and eventually wasn't, solved. Same w/ the oil crisis. I actually think there is some validity to the "peak oil" theory. There is no doubt that the rate of increase in demand for oil will soon outstrip the ability to increase supply. This is not because we are currently running out of oil, it's because there's not enough drilling rigs being built in the World to keep up with demand. The reason it's not a dooms day scenario is that we already have the ability to delay the crisis by increasing our fuel efficiency. Also, the World's reserves of oil are dramatically under estimated by the doomsayers. It took just a few years after the oil crisis in the 1980's for the US to cut in half the per person consumption of oil. Another thing is that oil is no longer used much for the production of electricity. We have enough coal in the US to last 400 years and can use it to power electric cars. We can also use natural gas when the oil runs out and by that time the technology will be economical to use solar power to make Hydrogen.

Ever hear of Easter Island? It was a great place to live, until the idiots who lived there cut down the last tree so they could log-roll those big stone faces into place. With no more trees, there was no more ocean fishing. The winds stripped away the topsoil. Stories tell of a time of cannibalism and relentless warfare. I used to wonder... what did that man think when he chopped down the last tree?

NOW you're being a prick for the mere sake of being a prick. You're seeing things which aren't there, and falsly assigning meaning to what I'm NOT saying. We've had this discussion before, and I've explained it before, and yet, here we go again. You're consciously misrepresenting my remarks as to meaning that which they clearly were never meant. Why ? Simple. You've formed an opinion of me which is grossly misguided, distorted and otherwise flat out WRONG. And it is from this false image that you've formulated a ready made response to pretty much anything I post. Which brings us back to this topic.

YOUR characterization is asinine, bullshit and naive. I've always made it clear that a HUGE amount of work was needed to avoid Y2K mishaps in banking, transportation, records keeping.... a very long list of items. This endeavor took YEARS to accomplish, and I've never once hinted, suggested or stated in any way what so ever this was NOT the case. HOWEVER, there were a vast number of whackos, religious zealots , t.v. evangelist and the like , who preyed upon the most ignorant leading up to y2k. And it wasn't just religious kooks, but survivlalist who were selling YEARS worth of food stuffs, water purification packages, guns and ammo, bomb shelters, gas powered generators, the list was never ending!

Maybe none of that happened across the pond, or did so at a far smaller degree, but it sure was in full throttle over here, and I'm none too proud to admit that at all. But that is what I expereienced, and how things were over here, if still for the fringe element.

Civilization will not grind to a hault come the day we pass peak oil production. Nor will it come to an end a decade, or 50 yrs past that point. Nor 100 yrs. Life will find a way. It won't be easy, and changes across the board are likely, but that's how it'll be.

Which post did I skip over?

My point, which apparently wasn't clear, was that it's not the smartest thing in the world to have to react to self-created problems.

Oil and other vital resources like fixed carbon and biodiversity take eons to form. We're clearly burning through our heritage of forests, fish stocks, unique species, oil, natural gas etc far far faster than they can be replaced. It doesn't take a genius to know "This can't go on forever". If we're so gorram friggin' smart, why can't we stop "using things up" and create situation where we can live indefinitely?

Yeah, because I'm the one that started with the personal insults, that's how much of a prick I am. I never insulted you, I said your characterisation was ignorant and assine. Part of our 'cease fire' was not insulting each other. You broke that, not me.
Quote:

You're seeing things which aren't there, and falsly assigning meaning to what I'm NOT saying.
I've clearly pointed to where I got what I said from your post. YOU, not me YOU, clearly tied together Y2K and peak oil. YOU then said the people that believed it were 'sheeple'. The meaning of that is clear, extremely clear, and as AnthonyT's post attests, I'm not the only one who saw it that way. If that's not what you meant, then you need to take an English course, because that's what your words say under any reasonable understanding of English.
Quote:

We've had this discussion before, and I've explained it before, and yet, here we go again.
Yes, because you keep saying the same thing over and over again. I call you on it, and you carry on doing it. Stop insinuating that Y2K was a big con and then acting like you never said that, and I'll stop calling you on it.
Quote:

You're consciously misrepresenting my remarks as to meaning that which they clearly were never meant.
No, because the meaning I attributed to your statements were clearly how the statement reads under standard English. I'm quite happy with normal English, and feel no need to learn AURaptor's personal dialect thank you very much. My reading of your sentence is a perfectly proper reading using standard English. The only person misrepresenting your remarks is you.
Quote:

Why ? Simple. You've formed an opinion of me which is grossly misguided, distorted and otherwise flat out WRONG. And it is from this false image that you've formulated a ready made response to pretty much anything I post. Which brings us back to this topic.
This is all bullshit. I read and responded to your post exactly as written, I didn't drag any outside opinion or data into that. Since our 'cease fire' I've tried very hard not to do so in fact, quite clearly I'm the only one making an effort in that regard whatsoever. I interpreted your post in a perfectly reasonable manner. You drove this, you had an opportunity to clarify your statements, say "yeah that was badly put" you chose to say "life will find away", a statement which clearly advocates sitting back and letting things fit themselves. I really do wonder if you're not trying to start a flame war on purpose.

No, it's English. It's a wonderful language, you should try it sometime.

No you haven't. Where in this thread, between flat out saying that Peak Oil is a non issue just like Y2K that only 'sheeple' are worried about did you make this clear? You haven't AU. I challenge you to quote where you made it clear on this thread, or any other without being prompted first. You have some nerve accusing me of lying when all I'm doing is reading your post as written, and evaluating your post only on what is written.

And far from your accusations that I'm acting like a prick, from this post (but not from your previous two) it seems you agree with me. You can't even agree with me without being obnoxious and insulting about it, and I'm a prick? You're un-fucking real mate.

Hello,

I'd like to point out something that may be misunderstood.

If I say that your position is ignorant and stupid, it's pretty much the same as calling you ignorant and stupid. That is, unless I believe that brilliant and informed minds produce stupid ignorant opinions. In which case, you might want to say so, because that's not how it feels.

No, if I tell you that your opinion or argument is ignorant, I clearly believe that you are also ignorant. I probably don't believe that a well informed intellectual purposefully generated ignorant arguments.

So, if you really want to have a proverbial 'cease fire' you might counter arguments without using disparaging terms that stick to the author. You might as well tell an oriental person "that argument uses slanted chink logic" and expect that he doesn't think you're calling him a slanted eyed chink.

Less emotional angles like, "I have some data to refute that argument" and "I believe I see a flaw in that logic" manage to better assail an argument and not its spokesperson.

I think you kind of have to take it in the vein it's intended - I view it as humorous, not as mean-spirited. But that's entirely because I've seen enough of Chris's posts to "get" his humor. I think.

And, hey - it works wonders for O'Reilly, right?

Now if *I* told 'Rappy to shut up, it'd likely be a different matter altogether, because he and I really don't get on well with each other.

To which you replied with a civil, well reasoned argument, presented in a clear and logical fashion, something which you continue to do regardless of which side of an issue you take.

When someone offers that, I do tend to give it in return, although my threshold for civility is prolly a lot lower than most, but what the hell do ya expect from a Detroit cab driver in that regard to begin with, eh?

Still, it's when folk lie, refuse to even acknowledge opposing viewpoints or maliciously distort them, engage in sophistry, strawmanning, covert racism, holier-than-thou or any other form of general nasty, petty crap, I tellya, it's like the ole white glove across the cheek, guy...

And taking a page from childhood hero Bugs Bunny, I tend to load mine with a brick when returning the favor.
"Of course you know, this means war!"

It doesn't make a discussion less viable, just less pleasant, but there are a great deal of things that I don't think can actually BE argued pleasantly cause it so severely limits a discussion, especially one carried only in text on a screen - some of the better discussions around here have been quite heated, but very informative despite this.

Of course, adding fuel to the fire for it's own sake is moronic, but if someone offers a valid point, even shrink-wrapped in three layers of snark, imma address it anyhow, just less politely.

But civility ?

That is something which is earned, and one must bring it to the table in the first place to get it from this corner.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

Silence all, for I am the Humongous...

Truth be told, why are we not pushing for electric cars? Tesla is able to do it.....

www.teslamotors.com

If I were President, (heheh and one day I WILL be) I would be dumping money into the Tesla Co.

Think about it, in another 10 years we could have vehicles that could travel 500-1000 miles on a single charge.

I really dont understand people somedays. The car companies could make a killing retrofitting our transports with electric engines...while also coming out with new and exciting full electric cars.

The gas stations would become CHARGE stations.

Hell, you would probably be able to hook up a Solar panel on your garage to charge your car.

Everyone would be a hell of a lot better off.

Sorry ,but you calling my characterization of something 'bullshit, asinine and naive ' comes across as a personal insult to me. You broke the truce, but I'm willing to overlook that, this time.

I'm not having the Y2K discusison all over again. That you choose to continue to see things in your own narrow manner isn't my burden, it's yours.

Stop denying there weren't enormous false claims made about Y2K, because there were.

Correct. No problem which couldn't be, and eventually wasn't, solved. Same w/ the oil crisis. Changes will be made, adjustments and the like, but those who stand to make the most $$ in giving the customers what they want, will move Heaven and Earth to see that those needs are met. Like it was said in Jurassic Park....

"Life finds a way. "

I referenced , in my post and others, that while things wouldn't go on completely the same, we'd find a way to adjust. Use of coal, natural gas,( which I did reference )improved drilling techniques, hydro-electric, nuclear....there's all sorts of answers to the question " what will we do " , but none is the complete answer all on its own.

So I ask you, stop simply playing the part of antagonist merely for the sake of it,and actually read what it is that I'm posting. This sort of back and forth really is a waste of time and I'm beyond tired of it.

Well, actually that's what you said to me, I find you attributing your words to me insulting. If you find what I said to you a personal insult, then you need to grow up, especially since you say worse all the time. In fact you said my opinion was ignorant on an earlier thread (actually you said I was ignorant, which is a personal insult, but I let it slide) so in anyway you want to spin it you broke the truce. You treated me far worse than I treated you, and you're going to over look it, well thank you Mr magnanimous. I get it, it's ok when you do it, another triumph for personal responsibility (I have to be personally responsible for your actions). Either you have no self introspection whatsoever or you live in a flaming fantasy world.

I find it very hard to believe that you got your response and mine mixed up, and since you're now attributing your words to me, I guess you must be trying to start a flame war.

It's not my burden either, since it's not true. What is your burden is that you don't even read your own posts, and won't stand by your own statements when called on them. It's perhaps why so few people here take anything you have to say with any more reverence than PirateNews.

How about you stop playing the part of the antagonist? How about YOU read what you're posting, or actually go learn how to form an English sentence, or man up and own whatever it is you write? How about you stop insulting people and then acting like you didn't? How about you stop trying to start flame wars then act like that's not what you want? Because I'm beyond tired of you acting like an obnoxious troll and blaming me for your behaviour.

There must be a lot of crackers in England, because the size of its parrots, man sized, it seems, is quite note worthy.

Not really, since you attributing your words to me, doesn't mean I'm actually repeating what you said. There must be a distinct lack of morals in America.

What's so funny is that, before America won her independence , it was the colonalist who saw themselves far more moral than the foul mouthed, crude, godless and lustful British soldiers.

Not making any judgement calls either way in the current status, I just thought it was fun to bring up.

Yeah, saying British soldiers from over two hundred years ago swore a bit neatly dodges the your immorality of lying and insulting not to mention the fact that you can't accept responsibility for your own statements. You should be thankful that your founding fathers had more testicular fortitude than you are showing.

Indeed, the founding fathers would weep if they could see what you've done with the American dream.

citizen.... I won't have my words twisted around and thrown back at me. I stand by exactly WHAT I SAID, not what you distorted me saying.

I know what I said, because I said them. That you misunderstood, or probably intentionally distorted, I can't be held accountable.

au contraire cou rouge, I know what your words said, because I read them. That you're incapable of forming a sentence in the English language, and haven't the basic human decency to to try to make yourself clear, is something I can't be held accountable for.

At any rate, I knew you wouldn't be able to manage it.

This from the obnoxious troll that not only can't manage to not insult people, but can't even form a simple English sentence. You really do live in a fantasy world, it's quite clear of all the people here, you're the nastiest and least intelligent. For you to say that to me is laughable, and adequately demonstrates why it is that nearly everyone on this site holds your posts in less regard than PirateNews's drivel.

Go back to howling at the moon troll, I've proved my point, you can't have a decent polite conversation with someone, anyone who disagrees with you. Despite my best efforts, you made none whatsoever, which speaks volumes about the kind of individual you are.

No,point of fact, these were BRITISH soldiers. Hessians came later, when things got dicey over here in the colonies.
