Who Won VP Debate: A Review of Polls

by George Harris
Kansas City Star
Readers Advisory Panel 2008

Random and non-random polls for the vice presidential debate declare Biden the winner over Palin in the vice-presidential debate.

Non-random (unscientific) polls on AOL and MSNBC web sites show Biden winning 48 to 45 and 78.6 to 18.9 respectively.

Randomly selected subjects on three other polls also show Biden winning:

CNN/Opinion Research Biden 51 Palin 36
CBS Biden 46 Palin 21
Fox Biden 61 Palin 39

In the CBS poll, of the uncommitted voters, 18% now say they will vote Obama/Biden, 10% now say McCain/Palin.

Post-debate reaction seemed to agree that Governor Palin gave a good account of herself in being able to deliver prepared answers, though often not responsive to the question at hand.

Biden was able to draw on extensive experience from his long experience as a Senator.

I was surprised that Palin's charm did not work better than the poll results showed. But she likely was weighed down by Saturday Night Live parodies and interviews earlier in the week with CBS's Couric. By the time of the debate, people knew that she is not ready for the presidency and saw through her efforts to appear that she was with canned responses.

The issue from the Thursday night debate ultimately is not about Palin but about McCain's judgment in selecting someone with so little qualification for national office.

The McCain/Palin ticket will likely drop into attack gear for the remainder of the campaign in a last ditch effort to stop Obama and Biden. I think it's likely to become really ugly but hope that McCain chooses instead to recover some of his dignity as Palin did in a good effort Thursday night.

The general consensus is that Bidon won narrowly on the merits and Palin won dramatically on the intangibles.

Given that pundits don't decide the winners, the real winner is decided by voters. In this case, folks who hated Palin, hated Palin more. Folks who loved Palin (like me) loved her more (as if thats possible). Everyone else watched to see Palin screw up...she didn't...and instead she took it to Bidon, took it to Barrack, and took it to the media and they really liked that. So while this debate may or may not rescue the election...it did rescue Palin and expose the media personal attacks as completely without merit.

If, as I suspect, we are reliving the 1970s, then Palin may be Ronald Reagan to McCain's Gerald Ford and Barrack's Jimmy Carter.

"The general consensus is that Bidon won narrowly on the merits and Palin won dramatically on the intangibles."

That's not what the polls show.

But you know - there's three phases of reaction. The immediate phase - the next day hangover - and something that happens 3-5 days later after a cooling-off period.

The immediate reaction to McCain was - not stellar, but credible.

Then 3-5 days later his poll numbers drop, and drop, and drop. What people were left with wasn't the immediate emotional manipulation but the overall sense of an old man too tired and too focused on telling old-man war stories to debate real issues.

The same thing will happen with Palin. Now, I'm sure for a lot of men (put your Palin banner away 'Hero', it's unseemly) it'll take longer for that perception to sink in. And of course the perception won't be that of an old tired maundering man. It'll be of a harsh, manipulative but ultimately empty weasel. But it'll happen all the same.

She did just ok. She missed numerous opportunities to attack and bury Biden & Obama. Seemed to me like she failed badly on many of the follow-ups, and did not defend McCain very well. The McCain campaign is doing everything wrong, and it showed again last night. There's no honest way to call it a win for Republicans. And one has just written this.

Snap polling of random people (that includes middle America too) indicates Palin did not do as well as Biden.

The people who matter are the undecided folks and those whose support is marginal. Biden got an immediate boost of 18% among the undecided, Palin 10%. And I suspect the repubican faithful will be energized, increasing potential turnouts by turning the tepid into the hopeful.

But the immediate reaction isn't the one that counts. It's the one that sticks with you after a few days. Palin will end up being seen as harsh despite all the smiling and winking, vacuous, weasley and parochial - and ultimately lacking knowledge and experience.

It'll take longer far this to sink in than it did with McCain, because frankly, a lot of men have their hormones invested in not believing the worst. But it'll happen.

I find it wholly unsurprising that the hard right thought she won. But everyone else, from the left to the middle/undecided, seem to be giving it to Biden. All that really varries is by what margin.

She didn't do too badly, certainly not as bad as many expected her to, but she didn't really have anything to say, either.

She did prove remarkable able to answer questions completely different from what she was asked.

But I guess it is a win for her if you consider "winning" to be "not swallowing your own tongue" onstage.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

I wouldn't say she resides anywhere near Hasbeenville, since she currently resides at "30 Rock," the best comedy on TV. You have heard of it, haven't you? It won seven Emmys this year.

Get your head outta your azz, whozit. No one who can use even half their brain thinks that Palin won that debate. Granted, she didn't make a fool of herself as I expected, but she certainly didn't score any points with me either.

Okay, aside from the fact that I didn't say she looked preprogramed - what planet are you on, anyway? She was reading off cards and spouting memorized dialog (sped through, ignoring natural punctuation - like a kid reciting a speech).

I know you're a hard-right wingnut who is going to support her no matter what she does - but come on - try to step into reality just a wee bit.

And who gives a shit if he has hairplugs? What does that have to do with running a country?

I sadly admit to never winning an Emmy (This years was lowest rated EVER!) But do you think Tina Fey could get 70 million to watch her? The only reason she's getting press is because of her Palin act, if McCain-Palin lose, she's back to doing low rated shows that win lots of Emmys, and movies nobody goes to see. In other words, HASBEEN!

Surely given Palin's answering of questions different to those answered, Whozit's response is somewhat topical?

Have you not heard of this yet? Might not be as bizarre as you think it is.

My old man mentioned Jimmy Dore talking about this last week, referencing an Alex Jones prediction from weeks ago. Now I'm starting to hear the Legacy Media talk about a new strain out of Canada that made its way to Michigan already.

Masks didn't work at all last time, but Democrats are just itching to put everybody in masks again and shut the world down because they're afraid of next year's election results.

If you think I'm going to wear a mask or abide any of this bullshit a 2nd time, you're going to have to go ahead and kill me.
