"The family of Gov. Jennifer Granholm this week is living on the equivalent of the food stamp allowance -- about $5 a day per person, she said -- to illustrate the problem of hunger."

As has been mentioned, I've lived in ghettos where a lot of folk are forced to subsist on such allowances, and frankly, it ain't enough.

You can't carry groceries on a bus, and them folk are too poor to have a car, so they wind up being forced to shop at the local ripoff markets where a gallon of milk is $5.15

About your only option is doin what we call the ramen noodle shuffle, which is how ya walk when you're holding four-five cases of the stuff cause that's all you can afford, IF the ripoff mart has any left, of course...

Now add to this, having to wrap the bags around a set of crutches in four inches of snow, dragging one twisted and mangled leg behind ya like quasimodo that's wrapped in an ace bandage to try and hold it in place while the ends of the bones and the broken metal plate supposed to be holding it together grind away inside...

People act like it's so fuckin easy to climb up outta that hole, well folks, it ain't - and even if you ever do, you'll have enough haunts about it clinging to ya to ruin your sleep forever.

As for the poor bastards who haven't yet turned to crime by necessity, you can always spot em, just look for those two sores at the corners of their mouth from the cycles of end of month malnutrition, when they gotta starve it out, steal, or deal - the moral ones, they die, ok, it happens, period.

Never goes away neither, they turn into scars, teeny ones, but still, the mark of the ghetto never leaves you, and anyone who's come up from down there can spot em in a minute.

Do you know what it's like to see kids like that, cause their religious mother plays by the rules and they spend one week out of four half dead from starvation ?

Goddamn, I didn't have much, but something like that.. *sigh*, and she wouldn't take my "bloody money" so what's to do but sneak em a sandwich on the sly when I could ?

I tellya folks, for every hue and cry about someone exploiting the system, there's fifty families like that, being strung along with barely enough to survive, playin by a set of rules that actively prevents them from bettering their position any, in part because of the endless waiting and paperwork scrabble that precludes even seeking employment, which requires more paperwork, and an employer willing to be very lenient with the repeated days off to spend all day waiting to attend a bullshit hearing which amounts in the end to either take the handout, or go fuck yourself.

Most of you don't know, you can't know - and I pray you never do, but suffice it to say that y'all should quit your fucking bitching about it, cause every penny spent here saves a dollar on law enforcement, court time and prisons for the unlucky or unskilled folk who get caught out for doing what it takes to survive.

And most of them are not quite insane enough to knock over street dealers and mules for their roll, which was a moral choice only as an afterthought, since robbing poor folk is too much effort, they got next to nothin and will kill ya to keep it, whereas the dopemen just write off the loss rather than bring the heat down by dropping a buncha triggermen on the hood, especially when they've been lead to believe it's each other doin it.

Anyhow, credit where credit is due, Jenny's tryin to put her money where her mouth is, she just don't know no better, is all.

I hope none of ya do, but I'd appreciate the favor of not fucking mouthing off about shit you know utterly nothing about, cause imma get some kinda boot-in-ass-happy on the next one who does.

No ? What's keeping you from doing so ? Not the Bus driver. Is it hard ? Is it more of a task to carry bags and bags of groceries on a bus ? Sure it is, but if you're poor, you're not carrying TONS of stuff in the first place. Just might mean ya make more than 1 trip.

Quote:

Those " local ripoff markets " are likely convenience stores, and not meant to serve as grocery stores. They likely sell gas out front too, right ? Except for specials on coke and pepsi, you'll be paying .59 cents or more for ramen noodles, which would cost you less than 20 cents in a grocery store. ( That's 5 for $ 1.00 for you folks in Rio Linda )

I have no idea what this line is even suppose to mean. Other than one needs not be religious to play by the rules .

Don't be more of an idiot than you can help, Rap.

Firstly, it violates MTA's no food or drink provisions, now once in a while you can get the driver to look the other way, all depends on how full the bus is, mostly... if you're gonna take the #14 line, you'd damn well better try it as early or late as possible.

As for bulk, ramen noodles, mac-n-cheeze, jiffy mix and other such items are quite bulky you nincompoop, which you'd know if you ever had to lug them a couple blocks, AND it doing so very late or early is risky as shit since it raises the chance someone hungrier and more desperate than you might try to take em from ya.

Two trips ?

What the hell are you smoking - that's $1.60 per person each way, $3.20 total.
$6.40 for two trips, not to mention the time to walk the eight blocks from the stop to your residence, walk back, and from the stop to the grocery store, twice.

$6.40 might not mean shit to you, but when every fucking penny counts, it MATTERS, and it's not like you can thrive on ramen alone without suffering nutritional deficiencies which weaken you even further over time.

No, one only needs to be a damn fool.

I was referring to a specific family down the street from me at the time, the mother was a religious sort, and her ethics were causing her family to suffer needlessly, something that wasn't easy to just watch happen.

Y'all take things for granted, even tiny little things, like a shaker of salt, a roll of toilet paper, some folk are so poor those damn things are luxuries to them...

As for this being a publicity stunt, sure it is, anything a politician does is, but the idea of a politician tightening their own belt a little in solidarity with the poorest of their constituents doesn't bother me one bit.

Right, as if it were so damn easy, without a car, phone, stable address and clean clothes.

Most of em try - but firstly, not having a car is a big damn setback, in Maryland you'll not get one on the road for less than $2500.00, the insurance inside the beltway is insane by itself, and on top of it registration, title, tags, and the emissions and inspections scams besides.

Consumer reports drove three BRAND NEW cars off the lot to one of these damn emissions/inspection stations, and they failed em all - see, that's how the scam works, they fail ya, and then hand you a list of what (supposedly) needs to be done, and a shortlist of "approved" facilities, which, when they get done ripping you off for the "repairs" then waive the test... till next time, where you get to play, and pay, all over again - and if you take it somewhere not on the shortlist (as in not giving a kickback to the station in question) then you don't get a waiver, and they'll just fail you again, oh joy...

I knew it was bullshit when they told me I needed a new PCV valve and the shop gave me an estimate of $135.00 for the part, and $65.00 for the labor, a fuckin PCV valve is a five dollar part and replaceable in about five minutes.

So I went back to the station, looked the bastard right in the eye and stuffed two ben franklins from the latest dealers "donation" into his top pocket while asking him to retest the vehicle, and wouldn't ya know, it passed, isn't that special ?

And that's JUST trying to get a car on the road, and how pray tell to afford one without an income, ehe ?

Most employers in the area wouldn't hire you if you were bus dependant, cause the #14 line was so damn undependable of itself, and I found out later when I did work for a couple of these yahoos that all job applications where the phone extension began with 355 or 354 were instantly shitcanned anyway, how nice is that ?

Oh, and did I not mention up there a bit, the leg ?

The freakin tibia was shot, the damn ends looked CHEWED, even on the x-ray, it was prettymuch fubar, especially with such limited medical support, but in an act of desperation on behalf of me and some of the doctors, they screwed a metal plate into the fibula and then strapped this heavy brace around it so that I could make a pretense of walking, which allowed me to do partial shifts for the employer I had at the time - till the fucking plate snapped in three pieces in there and my leg twisted up inside like a crumpled cigar, which about ended that gig on the spot.

Bear in mind that even when it DID work, walkin on that thing wasn't exactly fucking pleasant, I'll have you know, and for months I was draggin that mangled limb behind me wrapped in an ace bandage cause the original docs were forbidden to do anything about it cause the hospitals risk management dept was afraid of a lawsuit over all the rules they broke while figuring I would die anyway - pissed me off, cause I wanted that shit fixed more than I wanted to file a suit, but anyways...

Again, you're talkin about a world of which you know nothing about, and it's as laughable as a rookie straight out of bootcamp talkin crap to a veteran, so just keep lookin the fool, if you like.

Bullshit. There's no rule against carrying on groceries on any rail/ bus line. A whopper, fries and a large soda ? Maybe, but you can't tell met drivers won't let folks on who are carrying their weeks worth of food. Spare me

noodles weigh next to nothing. But I guess that's why po' folks have no problem helping themselves to the grocery store's grocery carts. Their intended to let you wheel around the store and then you return them when you've done loading your car. What po' folk do, those w/ out cars , is simply roll the carts all the way home. But do they think of returning the carts ever ? Naw.... grocery stores got plenty, they'll buy more.

6.40 isn't a lot of money. It's barely 2 gallons of gas ( as of last week - a bit more than 2 gallons this week... If you're gonna be buying groceries, you gonna have to find a way to get them home. Can't afford a couple of gallons of gas $$ ? What are you buying groceries with ???

How the hell did our ancestors surive w/ out stores and the like to go get food ? It's not like the mammoths and wild boar would off themselves in a roaring fire , just to make things easy for buffet style eating. Curse it Geeze, here I was having so much find winding AU's little clock by destroying his precious racist myths and you had to go and get all serious like....

He's funny when he's all riled up into foamin at the mouth incoherence, isn't he ?

As for a solution, primarily, less government would help, as would less taxes, good heavens, the tax bite down on this end of the scale is especially brutal, doubly so if you're an independant contractor - depending on what I make a week 34% or more gets eaten by the various tax vultures before it ever gets to my hands, and that doesn't begin to cover sales tax, motor fuel tax, property tax, utility taxes, and god forbid I wanna enjoy a smoke or a drink cause then you got a fuckin religious based excise tax on it, from a religion I do not subscribe to and in fact hate with a burning passion.

A good short term solution would be an across the board tax abatement for anyone who makes less than $15K per year, and I mean all of it, federal, state, local, the whole shebang, they're still gonna get reamed for every penny they spend, must we really fuck them so hard on every one they earn too ?

Things being as they are, without a radical change of how we run things, there's very limited potential for a real solution cause it's an endless fucking trap, a revolving door of catch-22 bullshit they have to put up with in order to recieve assistance that almost precludes the ability to be employed - no employer is going to look kindly on day after day having to be taken off to sit all day down at the social services offices only to be blown off by your caseworker at the end and have to reschedule...

I know they want accountability, but they're choking under the weight of their own red tape now, adding more isn't gonna improve the process none.

And if you did go with a tax abatement, many of em wouldn't NEED that help - it's a vicious cycle that makes them dependant on the very system that put them at the impasse in the first fucking place, you see ?

But I did wish to make a serious point about begrudging that help to folk, given that without it, they turn to crime by necessity and that costs us even more in the end via law enforcement, court time and incarceration, which in the end just makes them less employable and very much more likely to return to criminal activity since they have so few other options once they do have a record, that's asinine.

I mean, not to be crass, but it'd almost be more merciful to shoot em dead, then put them in a position where there's no real escape since no one will hire them, and so they turn to crime once again and the cycle continues anew - hell, some of em do it deliberately, at least in prison you get three hots and a cot, right ?

Like I said, for every penny we spend on helping those folk, that's a dollar less we pay at the other end in the courts and prisons, which might sound like a moral judgement, but is in fact a flat out financial common sense one.

And if we didn't rob those folks into starvation with taxes, they might not need that help so badly to begin with - which leads to the thought of all those extra personnel and offices to count and collect and enforce, wasting money at every single step of the chain, from robbing them poorer, to paying out and accounting for that assistance, to the courts and prisons, just waste waste and more waste, government choking on it's own tail like fuckin ouroboros the serpent.

So, while a long term solution requires a whole sea-change of how we do things, a short term solution is possible via the elegant simplicity of Tax Abatement.

But of course, that means less largesse for the Gov, and all the employees and civil servants chugging their fill at the trough during every wasteful step of the cycle above - all of whom will scream bloody murder when the gravy train comes up short, of course.

As if I give a fuck, but seriously, I think this is the way to go with it, it can be implemented even in our current fucked up system, can be done almost immediately, and would serve immediate benefit both to the folks under the lash and to the economy overall.

Frem, I know poor ppl too, and it ain't "taxes" that are killing them.

First and foremost it's lack jobs at decent wages for everyone willing to work.

Second, lack of a reliable car, and lack of decent PUBLIC transportation. We've employed many housekeepers on our day, some of 'em were "charity" jobs where we offered our home as refuge and took care of kids when mom was in jail.

Third, lack of education, daycare, family support. If your family has been living on the margin for generations, when the rewards are few and the pain high, the whole "work hard, get an education and get ahead" looks like a suckers game. Families tear each other apart. It's drowning ppl climbing on top of other drowning ppl... not a pretty sight.

The presence of drugs. One family member can take a whole family down the drain.

You mistake me, Siggy - those things are problematic too, but I am not so sure that Government can be a solution to those problems, other than public transportation, cause they're so notoriously BAD at it.
Quote:

the whole "work hard, get an education and get ahead" looks like a suckers game.

Mostly cause it is.
You price yourself out of the game and saddle yourself with massive crushing debt for jobs that have long since been outsourced on the cheap ?
Not exactly a winning situation, that.
Quote:

Families tear each other apart.

I think that restoring the family clan as a priority would be a good avenue to restoring some humanity to our society - these days, folk abandon gramma and dump her in a home as an outright necessity to maintain employment in order to survive, and that's just inhumane, but since our current social model makes it a necessity to stay afloat, what answer does one really have ?
Quote:

It's drowning ppl climbing on top of other drowning ppl... not a pretty sight.

Damn right it is, like I said, if you ever manage to climb out of that mess, what you do in order to accomplish it is gonna haunt you for all your days, it's not stuff I am proud of - but it was do or die, and it's that part of our society that disgusts me the worst.

Thing is Siggy, I am not all that receptive to the idea of using Government to solve social problems, save perhaps in the most minimalist sense, cause they're just not good at it, and often do more harm than good.

Now, a tax abatement on a company that hires poor folk out of the ghetto, that I can see, especially if the companies are more inclined to take it cause we've reduced significantly the level of corporate welfare from what it is now...

But the idea of Gov forcing peoples social choices has never set well with me, and ain't never likely gonna - you wanna talk SOCIAL problems, that's a related but somewhat different aspect, ok ?

Geeze asked me what a good immediate solution to the particular problems I was describing would be, and I suggested one, and that one is near and dear to me cause I am getting downright reamed on taxes, just tryin to stay afloat myself, believe me, that relief would carry well down in the lower income brackets, and is immediately doable even with our current framework, something we CAN do without years of political flakery and graft and endless proposals full of doubletalk and the usual red tape fullisade, just... cut a break, neat, clean, simple as could possibly be, to buy time to get better longterm real-world solutions rolling.

Just cause I might not agree with YOU, don't mean I am chuggin the other sides koolaid neither, I don't have a political "side" in that particular fashion at all, and nobody's party line is currently anything I am on board with, so save your partisanism as well - address the issues, or don't, right-O ?

Oh, and as for the F-bombing, I was channeling Revy from Black Lagoon, been kinda watching that all day.

Frem, gotta say, you brought back some ugly memories for me.

But you know that throwing money at the problem won't fix it.

The people and the culture have to change first.

First and foremost it's lack jobs at decent wages for everyone willing to work.

Can't find a job that pays enough ? Then work 2 jobs. Or 3. Hell,I had to , for a time. Why not them?

Second, lack of a reliable car, and lack of decent PUBLIC transportation. We've employed many housekeepers on our day, some of 'em were "charity" jobs where we offered our home as refuge and took care of kids when mom was in jail.

Cars are EASY to find, and cheap, if you all you're looking for is a transport vehicle and not a cool 'ride' . Don't have $$ for a car ? Get a scooter, a bike, ...there are tons of options.
And maybe if mom stayed out of jail, she'd have time to find a decent job in the FIRST place. Crazy, I know.

Drugs don't jump up and insert themselves into a person's body. It's about CHOICES. Some can't stand too much freedom, it seems. Education and hard work a " suckers " game? Tell that to folks who come here from another country, don't know anyone or even how to speak the language, but have the work ethic to put in 10,12, 14 hr days, doing jobs most wouldn't " lower " themselves to, then save some $$ and start their own business, doing something they know and love, or what ever and after a few yrs of hard work, they've lifted themselves out of poverty, taught themselves basic english and started making a better life for themselves.

No, here we have a class of people , brainwashed by the Fed Gov't and so called 'leaders ' to keep folks from succeeding. If people did the LEAST amount of work, to stay in school, don't get pregnant , don't go to jail , and get a job upon graduating H.S., they're assured of staying out of the poor house. Yet too many fail at this simple task , and then want help. Amazing.

Agreed, which is why not taking it in the first place is my primary suggestion.

As it is, we take it, divvy it up amongst civil servants, and then throw a pittance back at them, when we could save a hell of a lot by not takin it in the first place - and could ditch a lot of those trough-trotters feeding off this idiocy at every step of the way, in addition.

While I very slightly begrudge tossing the help to these folk a bit, Wulf - gotta remember that by Govt devaluing of currency by inflation and it's ludicrous level of taxation, the very money we're "spending" on them was more or less stolen from them to begin with.

So I'm not gonna growl too much about throwin it back, especially after the pork-trough boys have chewed on it, right ?

Oh, and for Siggy, one of my old allies who kinda reminds me of you is back in top form at the DU site, she tends to piss folk off a bit and thus has been booted from prolly as many sites as PN has - but it's worth the trip to go read her stuff, I guarantee it.

Shall we wait for Rap to totally contradict himself a few more times, or shall we begin the mocking now, ya think ?

As for you, Rap, your flim flam faery tale of semi racist bullshit talking points has been thoroughly shattered in this thread alone before you even spouted it - are you really out of mental ammunition that quickly ?

Or did you like, not really have a lot to begin with ?

-Frem

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

Point of fact, there is no faery tale, no racism what so ever in my post. Your inability to even attempt a coherent, rational response and your willingness to hurl inane 'racist' remarks into the thread only goes to show that you have nothing, and that you're trying to hide your ineptitude w/ the same old race baiting hatred that idiots on the Left ALWAYS do when they lose.

Typical.

Boy, you're a fucking moron. Those who use the bus don't TAKE the shopping carts. Those who live close by the grocery stores do. And don't tell me you've never heard of that problem. Hell, San Francisco was even planning on GIVING the homeless their own carts, so they'd stop using the ones from Safeway.

Ass muncher.
