Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

What, if any, do you think President Obama will be able to declare 'Mission Accomplished' about at the end of his first term in office? (While being factual, of course.)

1) End of U.S. Military Presence in Iraq
2) Health Care Reform
3) Rejuvenated Stock Market
4) Balanced Budget
5) Massive Development of Alternative/Renewable Energy
6) Peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians
7) Capturing/Killing Osama Bin Laden

Personally, I'm hoping for #1, and see it as a reasonable expectation.

I'd like to see #7 given a bit more priority...

I hope to see inroads made to numbers 1, 4, and 5. I think we'll see #3 at least in some form (let's face it, a four-year recession would be pretty rough on most of us). # 2 will probably have to be put on a back burner, unfortunately, due to all the other costly fires he's got to deal with. # 6 would be nice to see, but I don't think I'll really see that in my lifetime.

Hopefully 1, possibly 7.

The rest I see as long-term things.

2 It took the Canadiens many years to bring their type of medical-care payment system on line, I don't see the US taking any shorter.
3 The stock market follows the economy, and the economy has been sadly trashed over the years. There was a book that made a lot of sense to me - 'The Bubble Economy' - which did a good job describing how insubstantial and fragile the US's economic growth has been of late.
4 Balanced budget --- not within a year. There's that huge debt to pay off along with what I believe will be reduced revenues due to the bad economy.
5 Alternative energy technology is already here. What's required is investment to re-tool electricity generation and transportation. Again, that's a huge project, something that will take years.
6 Peace in the Middle-East ? SignyM is interested in the very general question of what drives people. She pointed out to me many years ago a study that was done about what are the necessary conditions for lasting peace. After studying various peace agreements and whether or not they lasted, the researchers concluded that the only way to have lasting peace is when both sides are thoroughly sick of war and both sides are completely convinced there is nothing to be gained by fighting. In other words - they've been at a costly stalemate for a long time. Until the US stops helping Israel, that country will never feel the pain, and there will never be peace. IMHO

And to all, a good night.

Aw come on, Osama's been dead since Dec 2001.

He died of complications from pre-existing medical conditions and they buried his ass somewhere in a nameless grave on the border, cause they didn't wanna admit it, and our guys didn't wanna admit it neither.

But folks, he's dead, so unless someone wants to send in the Ghostbusters, I kinda doubt we're gonna "catch" him at this point.

As for the rest of it, four years ain't enough to undo all the damage, not to mention the outright sabotage I think we ALL know, and will refuse to admit, this administration is gonna do on it's way out to spike the ball and make it harder for Obama to pick up and carry, it's a friggin american tradition, practically.

He could maybe, JUST maybe, pull off #1 - and might get some inroads on the rest of it, but things are just too far gone to think anyone can just yank us out of this powerdive to oblivion so easily.

But you know, sometimes I'd really rather not be right....

Reasonable, maybe. Wise? Possibly not. Was a terrible idea to go there in the first place--and this from a guy who was there himself, for a while. But I'm still not convinced that the idea of just leaving is the best idea ever. If the conditions for such a withdrawal were right, I'd be all for it. But as yet, I don't see any signs that they are.

Commence crucifixion.

No crucifixion here. First off, I'd like to say a big "THANK YOU" for your service to the country.

Second, I agree with your point - once we're in, we're all the way in, and there's no quick exit that's going to be a real benefit to us, or to the Iraqis who'll be left with a shattered country and no real way to rebuild it into a viable nation. Which was the biggest reason NOT to go in in the first place.

It is, unfortunately, much harder to build things up than tear them down.
Number one, I can see that happening in a term. It's four years, people, should be ample time to pave the way and take it out.
I think a start on health care reform and a balanced budget, but as I said it's so much harder to build things up, so those may not be completed projects in one term, which he says himself. These things could take a decade. But starting serious development in renewable energy could certainly give the stock market a nice boost what with the new companies it could create, so that would serve a dual purpose.
And speaking of building things up, how about a new World Trade Center? Just one building would be fine, a great big finger to whoever's still out there thinking they weakened us.
I agree with Frem that it's very likely Bin Laden is dead, but he wasn't the whole operation, and they could find another hateful and insane guy to follow. If he's not dead, well, by all means keep after it. Maybe a different outlook will find him. I think it might be more important to work on educating the people of the world, show them a new mindset, but that's a very long-term kind of strategy, and sadly some people only understand the language of violence.
Peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians? That's up to them and them alone.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

1) End of U.S. Military Presence in Iraq

I suspect we'll have a substantial military presence in Iraq through 2012. Either that, or a lot of dead Iraqis if we leave suddenly.

2) Health Care Reform

Depends on what you call reform. Nothing major. Too many Congressfolk on both sides of the aisle get too much bucks from the industry.

4) Balanced Budget
5) Massive Development of Alternative/Renewable Energy

Mutually exclusive, unless taxes are raised a lot more than the current Obama Plan.

6) Peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians

Yeah. Right. Not our job anyway, and we haven't done that well trying in the past.

I'd rather see it as a complex of FIVE buildings. Four smaller ones, and a middle one about 3 times as tall, as a REAL "Fuck You!" to Al Qaeda and its followers.
