Sheer and utter ignorance. A cross section of 12 Obama voters, and what they knew right AFTER they had voted for Obama.

And before you get your panties in a wad and say " these were cherry picked to make Obama supporters look bad, it could have been voters for any candidate " .....understand that this was done independently of the Zogby International poll

Survey finds most Obama voters remembered negative coverage of McCain/Palin statements but struggled to correctly answer questions about coverage associated with Obama/Biden http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.cfm?ID=1642

He got more votes in more states, and won more Electoral College votes (more than a 2-to-1 margin).

HEH... funny.

I'd like to do something similar with the cretins who voted for Bush in 2004. Except it might be hard finding any who would admit it.

Honestly, he got elected just like all of 'em do. They got the money and the media behind em. What else is there?

Well, Rapo and Hero will readily admit it - although Hero swears that "intellegence" had little to do with it. Which is pretty obvious...

Yeah, that was such a good line...we were discussing prewar intellegence failures...but I had to write it.

To think all these years later it still brings a chuckle.

I voted for Bush. At the time I did I knew who was in his cabnet, who controlled Congress, who the major world players were. I knew lots of stuff, same as this year.

What voters knew or did not know now or then is not relevant. A voter can vote for the candidate of their choice for ANY reason, even bad ones or none at all. These reports, and the one from Zogby is really telling, are not truly critical of the voters. They represent a failure of both candidates, who failed to communicate their messages, and the media, who failed to accurately and fairly report the news.

But this is not a new story. Voter manipulation has always been a part of American politics. If you think its bad now...watch 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington', which was a commentary on their times that applies to ours as well.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Ignorant voting is partly the media's fault. Every cycle someone does an anlysis which shows most coverage as the "horse race" kind, then there is negative "personality- identity-voting" coverage, and issues are a distant third. Every election cycle peeps decry the coverage, but the next election we get the same old crap- again.

I do sort'a wish Zogby had done a baseline of the same questions with all voters for comparison, although I'm afraid the results would have been just as discouraging as these. Almost - but not quite - makes going back to literacy tests for registration seem like a good idea.

Hero, you've been a remarkably good sport about it, I must say. I'll try my best to not bring it up again, ever, just because you've been decent about it and proven that you do indeed have a sense of humor, even when it's at your own expense. Any man who can laugh at his own mistakes can't be all bad.

And I apologize for mentioning it in this thread. It's old, it's over, and it's time for it to die.

Maybe there's hope for all this "working together" thing yet.

This "neutral" Zogby poll was actually done by a fella name of John Ziegler (JZ). Interview with him, regarding this poll, here:

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/interview-with-john-ziegler-on-
zogby.html

Highlights: (Interviewer is Nate Silver [NS])

NS: Okay, that's what I kind of guessed. How many Obama supporters did you speak with in total?
JZ: All twelve we spoke with are in the video.

NS: Was there any significance to the fact that in the YouTube video, seven of the twelve Obama supporters were black?
JZ: [Laughs]. The reason why we had more black supporters – that might surprise some of the people that we spoke to -- if we go by your apparent ability to determine race -- the first location happened to be in a black section of town and we were able to get our interviews faster there because of they way that was set up, because of the logistics. We had a second location but it got dark and we didn't have any lights. So, that's it, it was no grand racial conspiracy.

NS: How did you represent yourself to John Zogby?
JZ: As private company, Death-of-Free-Speech-dot-inc which is the name of a book that I wrote.

NS: Did Zogby give you sign-off on the press release that he released on his website?
JZ: I'm not sure what you mean by sign-off. The press release I had input into, yes.

NS: Did you have financing for the project or was it paid for out of pocket?
JZ: It is not self-financed.

NS: Who paid for it?
JZ: You think I'm going to tell you that? When you've already shown yourself to be the enemy?

NS: Was it paid for by the RNC?
JZ: [Laughs]. In your world, the question that I would ask you is what question [in the survey] is there any ambiguity as to what the answer is?

NS: Well, that Obama 'launched his career' at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground --
JZ: That happens to be one of the questions that Obama supporters did the best on! They did better on that question than on any other Obama-related answers! And here you’re telling me that it’s not true?

NS: What do you mean by "launched his career"?
JZ: The first campaign as told by the person whose position he took in the State Senate, as told by her admission, his first campaign event was in the home of Bill Ayers and his wife. [Laughs] Unless you live in the Obama kool-aid world! That is astonishing to me that you would not accept that!

And in a later post ( http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/did-talk-radio-kill-conservatis
m.html
), Nate Silver refers to the bold sentence:

"This might be the key passage of my interview with John Ziegler on Tuesday, for it is, in a nutshell, why conservatives don't win elections anymore. It is not that conservatism generally permits less nuance than liberalism (in terms of political messaging, that is probably one of conservatism's strengths). Rather, the key lies in the second passage that I highlighted. There are a certain segment of conservatives who literally cannot believe that anybody would see the world differently than the way they do. They have not just forgotten how to persuade; they have forgotten about the necessity of persuasion."

Sound like anyone we know on this site?

I should have put this first. Nate Silver's first post about the survey:

The conservative website HowObamaGotElected.com reports that it has commissioned Zogby International to conduct a poll of 512 Barack Obama voters as part of what can best be described as a viral marketing effort to discredit the intelligence of Obama supporters.

The website, created by former radio talk show host John Ziegler to promote a forthcoming documentary, features a YouTube clip of interviews with 12 Obama voters who "were chosen for their apparent intelligence/verbal abilities and willingness to express their opinions to a large audience". The clip portrays the Obama supporters as giving "incorrect" answers to political questions such as "which candidate said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket". Of the 12 Obama supporters interviewed for the clip, 7 (58%) are black; nationwide, about 23% of Obama supporters were black according to the national exit poll.

Most of the questions on the survey take the form of a multiple choice political knowledge test, stating a "fact" to the respondent and asking them which of the four major candidates (Obama, McCain, Biden, Palin) the statement applies to. Questions include the following:

"Which of the four [candidates] said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket?"

"Which of the four [candidates] started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground?"

"Which of the four [candidates] quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism?"

"Which of the four [candidates] won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot?"

As should be obvious, the veracity of several of these claims is -- at best -- debatable, yet they are apparently represented as factual to the respondent. It is not clear whether the respondent is informed of the "correct" response after having had the question posed to him.

To my mind, this survey meets the definition of a "push poll", which the Random House Dictionary defines as "a seemingly unbiased telephone survey that is actually conducted by supporters of a particular candidate and disseminates negative information about an opponent."

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/zogby-engages-in-apparent-push-
polling.html

Hello,

Best estimates I've been able to find place Bush's IQ at 124, Kerry at 122, and Gore at 134.

http://www.sq.4mg.com/Presidents.htm

Obama IQ estimates vary, from 130-165, according to various websites that assert it with certainty but with dubious credentials.

Hello,

I'm rather appalled at that statement, Wulf.

But if it matters to you, Mccain got a higher rating with the Jewish community in regards to how likely he was to benefit Israel.

Though racist views don't really need disproving, that would seem to be another log on the fire.

So there's a book out there that any one can read at any time and it's about how Free Speech is dead? And you don't find that even slightly ironic? This obvious manipulation of free speech being authored by someone that says free speech is dead - again, you don't find that ironic at all?

No different than anybody who voted for Bush because he was going to reform Social Security or make a Constitutional ammendment to ban gay marriages in my eyes.....

See a pattern developing here?

EDITED TO ADD:

I've seen Forrest Gump shake JFK's hand and that was over a decade ago. Just like I give everything else 50/50 that I see in the news I give these people 50/50 that any one or all of them are or are not actors.

That being said, I do believe either way that this video is an excellent portrayal of your average American voter on either side of the fence. The truth is, you could make the Republicans look just as dumb in a video using very similar tactics. In the converse, you could make the supporters of either party look absolutely brillant in comparison depending on which questions were asked.

Bottom line is, I truly believe that this is exactly how Obama won the election. I feel the need to tell everyone that I would be equally convinced that a scenario just as easy to manipulate had tipped the scales the other way had McCain supporters won, I would be thinking the exact same thing about that majority.

If I were to vote like this, since the biggest thing that's bothering me in my life now because my lost money isn't really of immediate consequesnce to me, I would simply vote for the guy who said that he wouldn't persecute smokers anymore by allowing full-statewide bans on smoking in bars and by raising the taxes every 6 months.

Honestly, somebody who told me that would have a very convincing stance in my eyes....... But what secrets does he/she have? How have they voted for other similar measures, and how have they voted on other very different issues? How often do they show up to vote? Is there a pattern to the votes they happened to miss or make? Who are his primary campaign contributors, and are they mostly corporations, lobbyists, or the people themselves? Are they honest about who gave them the money and did they do everything in their power to make sure that foreign interests or fraud wasn't involved in their contributions? Did they really just pick that lady to be their running mate because pulling the Femme card was the only remaining ace up the GOP's sleeve in such a controvercial election? Did they do it not to win today, but to win in 4 years when Obama didn't fix things and maybe we should give the Woman a go?

Hell... I already feel that way about the two presidential elections that I've been old enough to participate in. I've never made it a secret that I was a Bush supporter both times when I was younger and (I believe) dumber. (It's all archived, and you can even see how some people attaced me right afterwards for admitting so if you're bored) Of course, that's not to say that I would have ever in my wildest dreams to vote for his competitors, knowing what I know now though.

Truth be told though, if forced today, with all of the decisions that I've been faced with in the last three elections(only considering both of the heads of the monster), I would probably vote for Al Gore if a ticket were handed to me with all of their names.

Maybe I'm just being manipulated though. I always give that possibility 50/50.

Shit, you can make the Republican CANDIDATES look that fucking dumb, and you don't even have to edit the video. Just ask McCain whether he supports health insurance paying for birth control pills for women the same way he supports them paying for Viagra for men. Or ask Palin what magazines and newspapers she reads, or even to name JUST ONE of McCain's "mavericky reformist" policy pushes.

So 'Rappy's point is that some voters are no brighter than his chosen leaders?

That's all a matter of opinion, and I'd honestly have to research those stances to even have a chance of believing they are true, let alone relevant, given the much larger fish to fry at this juncture.

I don't know about his point, but I'm sure of that, and that's a totally bi-partisan thing, regardless of what you really believe.

That's actually a Tina Fey quote if we're trying to keep it real here....

McCain was a prisoner, so I fail to see how that's worthy of being mocked or ridiculed.

Gov. Palin never said that, it was Tina Fey, DOING an impression of her.

My quotes were actual quotes, while yours were just sad attempts at humor, as far as I can tell.

Actually, McCain DID address a group at a rally as "my fellow prisoners".

And Palin DID say that part of her foreign policy experience was because she could see Russia from parts of Alaska.

Kwicko didn't make those up - those things were actually said by those candidates. You can call them "gaffes" or mis-speaks all you want, but they were said by the people claimed. And if you call those gaffes, wouldn't you have to call the Obama and Biden quotes gaffes as well? Or does it not work that way for Democrats?

The REAL reason Obama got elected is that he won more votes than McCain. pid. :)
