Hey, I'm no prude, but isn't the porn thing a little out of control here?

Or you could just be a totally shameless bastard like me and face it head on as a matter of fact part of life even it that happens to offend everyone else in the room.

I filed the whole "sex is dirty and evil" concept right next to racism in my youth, ridiculous, meaningless and of no use or consequence to me.

Although said shameless bastardy led to unpleasant rumors of a type which a young smartass like me SURE as hell wasn't gonna debunk!
"Lord Latex" indeed...

Yes, I actually got *mocked* for suiting up, it was thought unmanly or something, bah!

Well if not catchin STDs or knocking some chick up by accident makes me less of a man, call me a bitch all day long, if ya wanna.

Guess it never occured to them that were I to have actually done even half that crap I'd not have had time to attend class.

But *I* sure as ferk wasn't gonna tell em that, hell no!

I might not have been a well behaved upstanding little prude, but I never lied to, mistreated or behaved in a cruel fashion to a girl neither - that's a religious issue with me, you do *NOT* disrespect a woman in such a fashion because they are the fountain of life.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

PR, that one deserves it's own topic - I've made two decades of study on this kind of thing and can discuss source and effect issues for HOURS without losing steam related to those behavioral dynamics.

Yes, it is indeed scary. And it's not just the internet.

My grandniece is 12 years old now and I am petrified for her. She's a sweet kid and very pretty. When I walk with her I see grown men looking at her and I give them the evil eye as they pass.

At 8 years old she told me that there was a girl in her class that was the class "Ho" - yes, she used that word knowing it's full meaning (I asked her what she meant). I asked her mother recently if she had the "talk" with her yet and she said no. I was upset with her for not doing what all parents should do as soon as their children, boy or girl, hit puberty.

When it comes to sex parents are the last line of defense. We cannot be afraid to expose our kids to sex too soon anymore because, as you rightfully pointed out, it's everywhere and accessible to almost anyone that can click a mouse or a remote. When my son hit that age I had a sit-down with him. He said he already knew about sex from his mom (she's a nurse). But I spoke with him anyway.

But I'm afraid it's not enough, because kids are naturally curious - especially when it is forbidden. If they are to learn of sex it should be from a responsible adult - namely a parent. I'm going to call my niece again to see if she did the right thing, if not, I'm going to do it.
I don't want her learning it out there in the street from God knows who.

Tawabawho?

Shoes. Accessories. Hair.
Snobs find each other. They have ways. Radar or something. I'm sorry, I'm not meaning to attack you here at all, but thinking otherwise seems very much like hopeful naivete to me. I've done some research on this sort of thing, and I also have my own encounters with snobbery to draw upon. The cause of the snobbery is what needs to be addressed, not the effect once it's in full swing. This is true in all forms of health, be it that of the body or the society as a whole.

Well, as I said, not all of it can be eliminated, but I don't think that school uniforms would have no impact at all.

Without uniforms, economic background and fashion sense are the most visible thing about a person, and I think at least the former would lose some visibility, especially talking in terms of below average economic situations. Wealth will always find a way to show itself but I think it'd be a lot less easy to distinguish average from below average in a uniform situation, allowing kids to display more of their individuality without having been prejudged based on belonging to a particular group.

I agree that the underlying attitudes are what really needs to change but I don't see why both can't go hand in hand. In health care, we often treat symptoms along with the cause, as well, to reduce suffering until the cure takes hold, after all.

And I didn't think you were attacking me, no worries. :)

That should be way, way, way before puberty. WAY before.

I knew how sex worked when I was four, that adults do it for fun and not just babies, too, and I learned about things like contraception, condoms, STDs, etc. along the years long before I got curves, which is a real blessing because it was never carried the thrill of a forbidden fruit in my mind. It was always an adult thing fraught with pleasures and problems alike, kind of old hat, information-wise, and I made pretty responsible choices about it.

If I had started learning about the more complex aspects of sex once I hit puberty, it might have been disastrous because like your grandniece, I started to look older than my years seemingly overnight.

But rather than becoming helpless sex fiends they grow up being a lot more sexually self-aware than your average straight kid.

I absolutely agree here, HK. School locker rooms & showers need to be unisex so that all kids get an eyefull according to their interests, and then that peek-a-boo schizophrenia would go away. I know that would have helped me way back.
