Quote:CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on charges he brazenly conspired to sell or trade President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder as part of what federal prosecutors called a "political corruption crime spree." Prosecutors did not accuse Obama himself of any wrongdoing. Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in an attempt to strong-arm the newspaper into firing editorial writers who had criticized him. The 51-year-old Democrat was also accused of engaging in pay-to-play politics _ that is, doling out jobs, contracts and appointments in return for campaign contributions.

Quote:Having a hard time keeping track of all 10,000 GOP scandals? Between fired U.S. attorneys, deleted RNC e-mails, sexually harassed pages, outed CIA agents, and tortured Iraqi prisoners—not to mention the warrantless wiretapping, plum defense contracts, and golf junkets to Scotland—you could be forgiven for losing track of which congressman or Bush administration flunky did which shady thing. Renzi—now, was that the guy with the skeezy land deal? Or the woman Paul Wolfowitz promoted? We're not saying that Democrats never do anything shady. (Cash-stuffed freezers come to mind.) But as the saying goes, with great power come great opportunities to screw up royally. And if your memory is as hazy as ours, you could probably use a handy refresher

As for this new teapot tempest - assuming for the sake of argument that it WAS Emanuel on the other side of the argument with Blagojevich (and that is quite a large assumption) - he must have been arguing AGAINST the sale of the Senate seat. Wouldn't that make him - and by extention Obama - the good guy ? What do you have against that ? *************************************************************** Silence is consent.

As far as this issue goes, O is made of Teflon...this will all get pinned solely to Blagojevich. Common logic points to O as at least being aware of the favor he could dole out. That's the way Chicago works, you see. I have no doubt that a conversation twixt the president-elect and the Illinois gov occured at some point, but the FBI has no tape of it, so O will be able to avoid this one entirely.

Quote:Originally posted by rue: WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Jurors in I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's perjury trial were certain of the former vice presidential aide's guilt, but they also harbored sympathy for him as a "fall guy," one of them said Tuesday after the verdict. Denis Collins, a Washington resident and self-described registered Democrat, said he and fellow jurors found that passing judgment on Libby was "unpleasant." But in the final analysis, he said jurors found Libby's story just too hard to believe. (Watch juror explain their verdict ) "It was just very hard to believe how he could remember it on a Tuesday and forget it on a Thursday and then remember it two days later," Collins told reporters outside U.S. District Court. "Having said that, I will say that there was a tremendous amount of sympathy for Mr. Libby on the jury." (Your e-mails: "Libby is the fall guy") "It was said a number of times, 'What are we doing with this guy here? Where's [Karl] Rove ... where are these other guys?' "We're not saying we didn't think Mr. Libby was guilty of the things we found him guilty of, but it seemed like ... he was the fall guy." (Watch how Libby could stave off jail time ) Collins said the jury believed Libby was "tasked by the vice president to go and talk to reporters." *************************************************************** WASHINGTON - Top White House officials tried to blame vice presidential aide "Scooter" Libby for the 2003 leak of a CIA operative's identity to protect President Bush's political strategist, Karl Rove, Libby's defense attorney said Tuesday as his perjury trial began and the first witness took the stand. *************************************************************** *************************************************************** Silence is consent.
