DREAMTROVE

If anyone uses linux. My windows drive just crashed, and I've been trying to access the files through a USB external. It's possibly just dead, but I've had mixed results with USB drives in linux before, sometimes they appear, and sometimes not. I was running an anti-virus when it died.

Anyway, is there any handy was to force linux to search for an external USB storage device?
I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 on an m140, xps, dell i8k achitecture.

Thanks
