GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Living here in metro D.C. it's hard not to get a ton of inauguration coverage on both national and local news. Much of it is interviews with folk who have come from all over the country to be part of the event. From what they say, they're here because they see the Obama inauguration as an unprecedented change in the way America is going to be. A lot of the change they say they expect is either more expensive than the country can afford right now, given the economic situation, or politically not feasible.

Madame Geezer and I were discussing this today and we see two possible outcomes if President Obama can't meet their expectations.

One is a repeat of the Carter Administration, where the President's message that we can't do everything at once will turn the folk expecting radical change against the messenger.

The other is that the faithful will refuse to accept any criticism of what they think President Obama stands for(as opposed to what he really says) and will demonize anyone who disagrees, no matter how logically or correctly, with what they consider his agenda.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Probably the second one. After all, it's pretty much what's happened for the last eight years...

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

Or, three, they'll take the changes they do get (including being really happy that Bush is gone), and be disappointed/frustrated in the changes they don't get (at which point they may be moved to action, such as writing or protesting or getting involved with an organization).

When did you abandon reason for madness?

Probably about the same time you started dealing in "facts" like the "fact" that 95% of them pay no taxes whatsoever...

DREAMTROVE

My guess is an 18 month honeymoon, and then an economic collapse. Meanwhile, Obama will try to pass some legislation that is well intentioned, some of it solid and good, others probably naive and overreaching, but much of it will be blocked by the democratic party who look like they are going to be fighting with Obama for power.

I'll be interesting to watch. I suspect the results will be tragic, in a Mikhail Gorbachev way, ie, Obama will get blamed for a lot of stuff that will not really be his fault.

The third possibility is that he will be everything the media and his worshippers think he is.

I fully expect him to end his speech today by making all the water bottles fill with wine and raining fish and loaves upon the huddled masses (but not on anyone making more the $75,000/year).

Not only does that not answer the question, it makes no sense, what so ever. It IS a fact that some 40% of Americans do not pay income taxes. I was using the 95% figure to show Barack's absurd claim that he'll cut taxes for 95% of Americans. ( TAX PAYERS ) Your continued misuse of my quote is a constant source of amusement for me. Keep it up.

" I do not believe what I'm about to see " - Congressman John Lewis, ( Democrat -5th District, GA )

That, Congressman Lewis, is why so many blacks in this country fail. They simply do not believe, and it takes an event like this to make them see that, yes, America IS fair, is free has been for quite some time.

No more excuses, folks. No more entitlements for those who are " owed " for sins of the past. The debt has been paid in full, finally, now move on, and stand up on your own 2 feet.

I'm white, and I still feel like I owe something. I had a good upbringing, and it seems to me that's been at the expense of people kept in slums, who tend to be ethnic minorities. If they've always had the same slice of economic pie, why are they still there? If they had the same slice of economic pie, would I be as well off as I have been?

Really think Obama is an exception, not the rule. I'd like to see that change, though.
