"I hope he fails"

'Nuff said.

But, to those (Rapo, you listening?) who'll say that this is out of context... Can you recall ANY "librul" anywhere who made an equivalently blanket statement of ill-intent? Especially at the beginning of Bush's term?

I can't.

I've heard:
I think it'll fail (faith-based initiatives)
It's bound to fail (Iraq war).
I hope the push fails (privatization of Social Security)
He should be investigated/ impeached/ tried for war crimes.

I have NEVER HEARD a librul hoping that the President would fail knowing full well that the nation would suffer as a consequence.

And NOW the Republicans want transparency?

Okay, here's a comment for all two-faced hypocrites:

There were so many in Jan 2001 that I just cannot believe you actually wrote that. Just..wow.

I recall days of "He's not the president" "He's the worst thing for america" "I hope he fails" He WILL fail"

Being how I'm at work I can't start digging around for the 8-year old articles, I'm not going to provide cites right now. But I remember the days well.

Look, I don't "Hope Obama Fails". I do not like him, nor do I like our new power structure, but I care about americans. And a failure in the chief exec position will spill onto everyone everywhere...no matter if it's a economic failure or a (god forbid) security failure.

I googled "Hope bush fails" and got tons of recient limbaugh related junk. Those 8-year old lines of text are going to be very hard to dig up. But I'll look at lunchtime. I do follow a great libertarian blogger who tracks this stuff and his archve can help me. In the meintime, here's a nice article by a brit with some interesting things to say about our 44th president. Leave it to the brits to cut to the heart of things.

Actually I seem to recall liberals foaming at the mouth during that wonderful perios between the 2000 election and the first month or so of the Bush Presidency. Liberal commentators were still harping on the election results, No Child Left Behind, and the tax cuts.

But since we're quoting out of context...

"His plan fails..." Rep Dick Gehhardt, Feb 27, 2001 in describing the President's plan during the Democratic Response to Bush's first State of the Union.

Context is kind of important. I hope Obama succeeds in restoring prosperity to the American economy. But if he plans to make us a Euro-Socialist State, I hope he fails. I hope he is able to fight an effective War on Terror, but if he plans to make us less safe by negotiating with our enemies and limiting our ability to detect and prevent attacks on America and its allies, I hope he fails. I hope he is able to run an effective administration that meets the needs of the American people, but if he plans to run for reelection, I hope he fails.

To make it clear, if he plans to make us vulnerable Euro-Socialists living in fear because he can't defend American territory or interets, I hope he fails. Other then that, I mostly wish him well.

If he can give us some of Europe's social programs (the ones that work), without violating our individual privacy/freedom or bankrupting the economy, I hope he succeeds.

Slightly off topic: Terrorists, the "if you give a mouse a cookie" crowd. You know, my impression has always been that terrorists resort to such extreme measures because they're desperate that their issues be heard. Rather than discourage them, I think a position of non-negotiation gives them no other recourse.

Sure, it's unreasonable for terrorists to, say, demand Americans convert to some religion or another. I don't think we should try to meet and appease demands like that. I think they know it's unreasonable, too; put the big stuff out on the table, and when you bring up issues and solutions that are much less obtuse, compromise seems more reasonable on those points. And there's probably the people who just hate us so much they include that in their demands because we never CAN appease them.

But what about things like troop presence as an occupying force, or lifting economic sanctions so families don't suffer? Those are the two main reasons that people give when they become terrorists, and those seem negotiable to me, good areas to try to strike compromise. In regards to the troop presence, it seems to me like natives are most pissed off that the troops are there without any say or permission from the people who live there. Give them a say, or maybe some concessions so they feel better about allowing our troops, and that might eliminate some hostility.

Maybe I'm just really naive, but it seems like listening to people and trying to help them out before they resort to violence is a wise course of action. I think these people just want some basic necessities met, and there's no reason to assume that they'll just keep escalating their demands if we try to meet them in the middle for anything.

Where oh where to you people get this stuff? Euro-Socialist? Really? You mean like giving out hundreds of billions in bailout money to banks and "friends" on Wall Street? THAT kind of socialism?

Or were you referring to the "free market" practice of taking all the security interests of the company, folding them into a massive new government bureaucracy, and then using fear to try to watch over every second of peoples' lives. Maybe it's THAT kind of socialism you're in favor of, eh? The fascist, militarized, uber-nationalistic kind?

As for negotiating with our enemies, where the hell have you been? You know why "the Surge" has had the success it's had? Not merely because we sent more troops or suddenly got militarily smarter - but because we PAID AL QAEDA IN IRAQ NOT TO ATTACK US! In other words, THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION NEGOTIATED WITH PEOPLE WE CALL OUR ENEMIES. As in, we negotiated with terrorists, which Republicans insist we never do and never have done, but which in point of fact we do and have done since before there was any such thing as these United States. Ronald Reagan was one of the best at bullshitting the really, really stupid people on the far right into believing that he didn't do this just because he said we don't do this. Apparently, you can fool all the Republicans all the time if you wrap it in a flag and yell "Support the Troops!"

Being ignorant of the facts and spewing the party line of bullshit is one thing, but remaining willfully and viciously ignorant when repeatedly having the facts laid out before you is just plain stupid. As in, can't learn and won't learn.

Tall order. I think he has no intention of any of the above, but the economy is already bankrupt. Might as well spend on the other side, balance the equation after the massive Fed fraud.

Okay, anyone who can work Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond into a discussion of US foreign policy deserves a beer.

I ran into Feclia Bond's mother recently...

I agree btw. Giving terrorism attention only proves that the tactic works. We could cover islamic protests, or better yet, give more attention to their rants in middle eastern newspapers. I mean, if we hadn't shut down Al Sadr's newspaper, he might not be controlling Iraq right now.

A table for negotiation of all parties is the best way to deal with any dispute. Wars start when talking stops, that's a quote from somewhere.

Recognizing of course that there are some terrorists who are simply trying to create chaos rather than bring attention to an issue. Those would still be a problem, but they'd lose their popular support, and would have to rely on the CIA

As far as the ridiculous demands, some of those are looking to compromise by waiting for us to say "Um, no, we're allowed to stay secular christians or whatever" and then them saying "and so by the same logic, we get to stay radical muslims."

But also, there will be the lunatic fringe that took too much opium who really want us to convert to Islam, but when they see they aren't getting any attention, and people who are pushing for international recognition of palestine are getting some coverage, they might rethink, and go back to a more logical position like the issue of US military bases in the ME.

Of course there are people in the west who don't want those debates to happen. They should also realize that in the end, avoiding the debate won't win, winning the debate will win, and they should work on that. But we have to have the debate with the mouse, or he's going to want a glass of milk.

I haven't been able to listen to Rush for a year or so now and I really miss listening to his analysis of the news. He sees things others don't and I think all liberals and conservatives would benefit by listening to his show. One of the things Rush often points out is that he is as much a entertainer as he is commentator. Some of my liberal friends that started out listening because they loved to hate Rush now respect him even though the totally disagree with him on almost everything. Most often those that bad mouth Rush have never listened to his program or at least not long enough to get a feel for it. That arrogant act he puts on is for the sole purpose of irritating his liberal audience, of which there are millions.

I mean, that particular niche was always a bullshit factory, but Limberger climbed into it on Downey's coattails and never really does meet the standard of showmanship, outrageousness and emotional chainyanking that Downey set in the first place.

Exhibit 1: Having absolutely no gorram clue of what they're talking about (see above )

But it could have been so much fun...

And it still can be, but lets keep it in the family. Also, use it sparingly. If it just got loose, we'd lose track of which threads were which, it would be madness, and very irritating for those who only follow certain threads that are interesting and dodge the bloodbaths.

There'll be time for popcorn.

Yes, the country does have serious problems... one of which is hard line conservative* assholes like Rush, and hard line conservative asshole-ery in general.

*Or whatever you'd classify him as.

Thank you, I would like to reclassify him.

First, let me say as a conservative I was deeply concerned with a lot of the things that Obama said on the campaign trail, and am still worried about the Clinton domination of the cabinet. But so far, at the moment, let me say this

Obama is awesome. This guy is just so cool. It's good to be able to say that about a US president.

That said, I hope he doesn't screw it up by mandating policies for families, etc. Existing programs on healthcare would be completely adequate if they were just funded. We don't need a new law forcing people to buy the product. I hope that doesn't materialize, it wouldn't control costs, and would make having children a privilidge of the rich. My own call would be: Renegotiate the prices of drugs with pharma for medicare according to the plan that the VA uses, and take the excess money and pour it into medicare programs like family health plus, problem solved. This doesn't need new taxes, it's already paid for. But [/rant] I like the guy. Unless he really screws it up, I like the family, they're great.

Okay, now for rush and his windbag radio on hillbilly heroin. I call these guys corporatists. They do whatever the corporations say. Bush/Cheney were corporatists. They're the same sort of corporatism that corporatism has been since the term was coined by Benito Mussolini: They believe in the merger of corporation and state. Separation of corporation and state should be a principle. Maybe it should be an amendment. These guys are part of a greater political movement of globalism, which I disagree with. But before people go all conspiracy theory, I have something to say:

[rant]
Globalism is real. Corporatism is real. These are real ideologies by people who get up and spout them, and implement them in an unabashed fashion, and for people outside the political spectrum, we've been watching this for more than 8 years. But it's not a conspiracy, it's a real political movement, regardless of any conspiracies that may exist within it, CFR, or Al Qaeda, whatever, the dissolution of nation states to surrender to unelected unaccountable international bodies is a very real political movement espoused by its proponents quite openly, including the last three presidents. While I believe in an international political economic framework for getting along, it has to be based on mutual respect and when possible, trust. But not on some forced economic union. The nations of the EU are unable to write their own policy. Today, right now, Germany doesn't need to invade Poland: They can just buy it. The only thing stopping them from doing so completely, which they definitely want to do, is the lack of the ratification of the EU constitution. This is an issue, and it's one that I tried to force out in the light of day earlier, but when we talk about it, I think we should be at least as honest as our politicians and their advisors have been about what it is that we are really talking about here. It's a far more important issue for our individual rights, freedoms, etc. than liberal vs. conservative. If the globalists win, there will be no liberal or conservative, there will only by unipolicy, a one size fits all policy for Earth, and none of us will be able to escape it without a spaceship.[/rant]

Okay, now back to sanity.

Oh, and I don't like Limbaugh. He's a gun for hire.

Assuming this was meant for me, in the business, it's called a PROGRAM CHANGE. Rush has been doing radio for 20 yrs. MDJr's little one man show might have been heard locally, but Rush was going national with a whole new show at the time.

Rush rode no one's coat tails. He blazed his own path, and all others in the radio world have been trying to catch up, ever since.

Rush started out a decent but pompous conservative, lacking the characteristic diplomatic style that actually makes conservatives "conservative." But in time, he became a very typical ranting heroin addict, like the guys from trainspotting only not funny. He yells, and whores himself out to get his fix, and he alienates everyone until no one calls, and then crashes at some former friends place, only he breaks the couch because he weighs 792 pounds.

I thought heroin addicts were supposed to be skinny. This man has less class than ... anyone, almost. Someone help me out here. Who has less class than limbaugh?
