Quote:

At the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, January 28, 2009, Russian Prime Minister Vladamir Putin said:

We must not revert to isolationism and unrestrained economic egotism… Excessive intervention in economic activity and blind faith in the state’s omnipotence is another possible mistake. True, the state’s increased role in times of crisis is a natural reaction to market setbacks. Instead of streamlining market mechanisms, some are tempted to expand state economic intervention to the greatest possible extent… In the 20th century, the Soviet Union made the state’s role absolute. In the long run, this made the Soviet economy totally uncompetitive. This lesson cost us dearly. I am sure nobody wants to see it repeated.

The case is made by Putin's own words. I just reported it. That you're so childish as to attack ME for posting a fact, is telling.

So, you have nothing to add to the fact that Putin is telling Obama about the errors of too much centralized control over the economy ? Or is that just too boring a topic for you, and you'd rather play internet wars instead ?

Well, ya see, Rue... THAT was when it was WRONG to listen to Putin. Even though, y'know, Bush could see into his soul and all that.

So we should listen to Russia if they're saying things we agree with, but we should NOT listen to them if they're straying from the Republican party line, right, AuLapdog?

I think I've said as much before this, yet you keep belaboring the issue. Why?

DREAMTROVE

As the relatively objective member of the forum, it's my duty to point out that rap is 100% correct here.

Also, Russia is, and has always been, an ally of the United States, of course we should listen to them, they know far more about the dangers of state socialism than we do.

Finally, people who I usualy agree with, you sound like hypocrites when you oppose auraptor 100% of the time even when he's obviously right.

Use your brains, even to support your biased perspective, it would make sense to pick and choose your arguments. If you oppose people of a different political stripe than you 100% of the time, then it invalidates all of your positions in said arguments.

I could analyze this thread and say

1. here are people who oppose auraptor regardless.
2. some other argument they opposed him
3. ergo, they had no case then either, they were just opposing auraptor as usual.

Not saying none of you ever had a point opposing auraptor, but that this would be the logical deduction of your position.

I think imho, auraptor has a point a decent percentage of the time. sure, I'd say a minority, but hell, even whozit is occassionally right. No one is ever always right or always wrong. And yes, you look back, and there's a fair number of posts where dreamtrove has declared that dreamtrove was wrong.

humble suggestion, a couple of you might want to try that on for size. Just when you're wrong. Imho, right now, you're wrong, auraptor has a point.

Now, consider what I'm saying by extension, which is much more out of character than for me to say that auraptor has a point, it means I'm also saying Vladimir Putin has a point. Yes, even Putin is occassionally right, and here, he's speaking from experience.

Here's a little taste of that experience:

If my history serves, and I believe it does, the commies in Russia inherited the wealthiest nation on Earth. When they left, they weren't even in the top ten. To say nothing of what happened to the empire, public opinion, etc.

Still, I give them credit. The soviets, minus stalinism, were less of f^&kups as socialists than everyone else. Sorry the not-so socialist Sweden. Finland is currently kicking your ass.

Who's the we here? I think you're totally wrong to oppose the stimulus at this stage. Most of the money in the early phase will indeed help Americans with tax cuts, govt. work projects, and aid to states. The nanny-state liberal stuff you most object to doesn't kick in until after 2010. If the Republicans can get their act together now, and formulate positions that Americans will believe in, then they have a chance to retake Congress in 2010. They will be in a position to eliminate the largest portions of the package. But honestly I don't see that having any chance of happening. Republicans are suicidally committed to beliefs and positions that don't have any mass appeal anymore. And, of course, they cannot compete financially any more with Dems, and have zero organizational and campaign skills. The Dems have zoomed by Repubs in every critical way; become masters of the internet and grass roots, dominate support from TV News and newspapers, college campuses, and have reached out to every minority and dis-enfranchised soul in America.

As for the subject of this thread, Putin, all I can say is you sound like you're grasping for anything, from anyone, to oppose Obama. This is Putin, the guy who sells missiles and weapons to Iran and Venezuela, the guy who opposed the US at every turn in the UN in regards to Iraq, the guy who totally betrayed George Bush, the guy who sells his soul to make a buck from oil, the guy who invaded Georgia to crush democracy, etc etc. You really don't want to listen to this guy, do you?

Not "a chance" - a VERY GOOD CHANCE. Americans have become insanely short-sighted; if you don't perform and deliver as advertised, you're going to be out, and damned quick.

The stimulus package is the PERFECT campaign issue for Republicans in 2010. If it doesn't perform miracles and turn things around completely, it's an albatross to hang around the Democrats' necks. Even on college campuses and the internet, Republicans will be able to point to Washington and simply ask, "Are you okay with your government giving away TRILLIONS of dollars while you're unable to finish school or find a decent job? Why should your government be helping everybody except YOU?"

Republicans have reinvented themselves more than a few times, and they'll do it again.

And, according to 'Rap, a party doesn't need to control anything in order to actually control things. Just ask Barney Frank, the most powerful man in the world! So even if the Republicans only pick up a few seats, they'll be in charge again, even if they're not really in charge.

It's a different world now. No one knows what the truth is anymore. No one wanted the first bailout back in October, but Bush, Congress, and Sec Paulson scared the crap out of everyone with dire predictions of disaster to get it passed. Interesting how in the rush to give away billions of our tax dollars to ALL of Paulson's buddies and ex-associates, a few billion dollars here and there just disappeared with out any accountability. I see NO evidence that Republicans can or will re-invent themselves, not when Rush & Hannity are leading the charge against Democrats; a strategy that didn't exactly play out too well in 2006 and 2008. And why are Rush & Hannity even relevant in these matters? Because the RNC has had no leadership, no plan, no vision, no organizational skills, no fund raising skills ( maybe they could hire Blagovich), allowed Dem/NY Times nominated RINO McCain to be the candidate for President, threw Sarah Palin under the bus, never could or even try to defend Pres Bush all the years he was getting hammered daily. I see these people on cable with "titles" like former RNC spokeman, or former McCain advisor, and all I can do is say fuck you to them. They utterly failed at every conceiveable level to do their jobs.

DT - Okay, a couple things.

1) Where in this thread did I say that 'Rappy was wrong? I pointed out the irony of HIM of all people, a John Bircher if ever I saw one, wanting to listen to the Rooskies. It points up HIS desperation and willingness to flail around to find ANYTHING to fling at Obama. Throw all the mud you can find, and see what sticks.

2) There have been times when I've agreed with 'Rappy. You'll usually find them prefaced by me saying things like, "This is going to come as quite a shock, but..." or "It must be freezing in hell, because..."

Mostly I just like needling 'Rap, like I said before. We spar. It's fun, and a bit entertaining for a few others around here as well.

3) If I ever wanted to be taken seriously on the internet, if I ever wanted to impress people I'll likely never meet in real life or work with or have anything to do with other than sharing a love for a long-dead TV show...

...then it would well and truly be time to put that pistola in my mouth and pull the trigger.

For deeply serious discussions about deeply serious things, I'm far, far away from here. I exist here only to amuse myself, possibly to amuse others a bit, and to poke the easily-offended in the eye or the ribs from time to time, and to *TRY* to make them think about things from a different point of view. Once in a while, it even works.

Oh dear, that is a funny visual, innit ?

As for Putin getting a kick out of yanking our chain, oh hell YES - remember Afghanistan, when we paid off, financed, trained and armed the mujas (yanno, the folks now kicking OUR ass?) to run the Russkies outta dodge ?

And then we fall right into the same flipping trap, AFTER building more than half of it in the first place ?

The guy's GOT to be laughing up his sleeve at us, there's no doubt about it.

And hell yes, he's a crimelord, warlord, and evil as the day is long, but unlike *OUR* pathetic and pale imitiation politicians who all meekly serve the same agenda they'd have never have the brains to come up with, or the balls to carry forth if they did - this being the reason the do so with such abject incompetence, Putin is actually damned competent, dangerously so, and for that reason I respect him - and consider butting heads with him a damned bad idea given how flimsy the "will" of our bought and paid for employee politicians is in comparison to his.

Him being an evil bastard makes him no less competent, no less dangerous, and no less a badass mofo - and contrary to faery tales, being more moral but less competent than you're opposition means they will kick your ass, period.

MAGNIFICENT BASTARD.

But remember: Just cause I respect the sumbitch, and admire his ability and audacity, doesn't mean I care one whit for him or his agendas, neither.

Is there blame enough to go around ? Yep. The GOP should have fought harder for a great many things. Much of why W has such a low approval rating, many conservatives see him on the wrong side of immigration, Campaign Finance Reform, Private Property Rights, and others.

But to the point of the current economic down swing, and the clear division between GOP and Dems over the issue of controlling Fannie/ Freddie, there's no question who wanted to do what, and which party stalled progress on trying to do the right thing.

"Mr. Chairman, we do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac, and in particular at
Fannie Mae, under the outstanding leadership of Mr. Frank Raines. Everything
in the 1992 act has worked just fine. In fact, the GSEs have exceeded their

Actually the answer you were looking for was that about 90% of the problem deregulation was conducted by the GOP. Of course someone incapable of seeing things in terms other than "Republican GOOD, Democrat BAD", can hardly be expected to get that right.

It's a partisan filters issue.

Since you were setting her up as proof of who's to blame, it's pretty obvious. The one thing we can count on in your posts is that you're saying it's the Democrats fault (apart from that they'll have no substance outside of partisan rhetoric and propaganda of course). Or if you are trying really hard to be non-Partisan, it's a Democrat disguised as a Republican's fault.

As I said it's a partisan filters issue. You ignore the reams (actually probably OVER 90%) of deregulation conducted by the GOP while cozying up to their big business pay masters, and only see the minority of deregulation undertaken by Democrats.

It's astoundingly clear which US political party took the lead in deregulation of the financial sector, and whose agenda it really was. But truthfully, the Democrats did make some problem deregulation themselves, which allows lock step partisans to absolve their thought masters of blame.

Maybe you missed the part where I noted you can't see reality because of your partisan filters?

Those were her very own words, specific to this very topic. And if you'd stop running from the facts, as you so clearly want to do, you'd see that many Dems said very much the same thing as Congresswoman Waters

Fannie and Freddie were perfectly fine shape, being run in fantastic fashion. ( they weren't )

Further, the Dems questioned the motives of those who were TRYING to fix a problem, instead of adding anything constructive to the process.

Of course i'll ignore the overall question of which party favors regulation and which doesn't. Why? It's not relevant. To the SPECIFIC issue of Fannie and Freddie, it was the GOP, not the Democrats , who tried to fix a problem many saw years in advance.

It's relevant to the overall case you were making. Only a lying partisan would try to play off that the whole financial collapse is down ONLY to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But then only a lying partisan would neatly cut out any Republican obstruction and portray it as the evil Dems blocking the angelic righteousness of the wonderful Republicans.

The Republicans didn't seriously try to fix shit. Maybe a few Republicans raised concerns about that one specific issue, but it was the Republican parties deregulation that allowed it to occur in the first place. At best the responsibility is fifty fifty.

You refuse to address anything specific, and instead hurl insults and simply play the role of contrarian. I've made my case, and all you've done is whine an bitch and say " no it's not " , over and over again.
I've plainly stated, and it's been clearly shown, again and again, that the Fannie and Freddie issue had a MAJOR role in the current economic down fall. I've said this, I've shown this, and yet you continue to make up shit, saying " Oh, NOW you're trying to cover your tracks, by saying it only has to do w/ Fannie Mae , etc.... You're trying to squirrel out of every corner you back yourself into, and I find it pointless in playing this game any further.

Watch the video, address the specifics of what the Dems say, or simply drop the issue.

Until you can stop lying about what I said and start dealing w/ the facts, I'm done.

p.s.- Stop accusing me of LYING every time we disagree. You being wrong isn't a case of ME lying. Learn what the damn words means, or stop using it.

Because your case has been blown out of the water so many times it should be embarrassing to you that you run away from thread after thread and just repeat the same tired nonsense that was disproved in the last thread you visited. The specifics of your case have been disproved so many times, the only person who still thinks you have a case, is you. I'm not going to destroy your case point by point again, it's entirely redundant. I've pointed out that the economic crash was caused by a lot more than two banks that didn't even hand out loans, but you can't come up with an argument against that, so all we get it "blather blather blather, the Dems stopped reform blah blah blah Republican majority didn't matter, the only issue that matters is Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac". You can't actually support your case that it was all down to two MSB holding organisations, and that was all down with the Dems, so you try to frame the issue, and restrict it to talking only about how its the Dems fault. That's right, keep any evidence of Republicans being also at fault out of the equation, truth isn't important if you can win a partisan propaganda point. You can't prove your case, because you have none.

No AU, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac aren't the major factor in the economic problems, and you can't even begin to support that case. You just focus on that because you believe it's your best chance of making it the Democrats fault, and absolving the Republicans of all blame for their actions. Denying responsibility for their own actions does seem to be the way of the "personal responsibility" American far right.

I've thrown no insults at you. Though, I might add, given that your arguments are nearly entirely based on insults, you're the last poster here to have a right to complain.

I did discuss Putin. I'm the one who STARTED this god damn thread. HE SAID it, so what's to discuss ? As for what to do now that the US is IN this situation, Putin is saying don't do what they did, because it doesn't work. If you have a problem with that, then I suggest you call up Vlad. I'm not the one telling Obama this, PUTIN is.

You're the one who isn't dealing w/ the facts. All you're doing is acting like a child, repeating the exact opposite of every thing I say, and then claiming I'm the one who isn't dealing w/ the issues. Save for the 'moron' remark, ( and honestly, Job would be impressed w/ the patience I've shown ) I've insulted no one in this thread, and yet you're the one who accuses me of being a liar. Though you can't prove or even point out where I've lied about - ANY damn THING.

I know all you're trying to do is start a fight, as this is some sort of low rent entertainment for you, but I'm not goin' there. I've not ' run from thread to thread' either. I simply state the facts, and all you do is deny them and try to pick fights.

And if you disagree w/me, then you're a liar.

So, have at it.

This thread is about Putin, not your hatred of the democrats, or brainless attempts to attribute all your lies, bad behaviour and inability to accept reality and facts unless they come with a rubber stamp from the Republican party, to me. I wouldn't mind, but your mad ravings aren't even consistent. One minute I know nothing about the US political system, the next I'm a partisan democrat? And you call me a moron? That's pretty funny right there.

As I said, I've not insulted you. Calling you a lying ignorant moron partisan isn't an insult, because it's true. Those are your rules right there.

You have no case. And you know it, that's why when your ignorant ravings flake apart like the insubstantial partisan propaganda they are, you run away to a new thread, even ones that have nothing to do with it, and repeat yourself. Hoping that if you repeat the lie often enough, it'll stick. That's why you're a liar. Because you take your disproved crap, and repeat it again and again and again in as many threads as you can, hoping that people will accept it as truth, knowing you can't support it as substantial debate, because it's not true and you fail every time.

That's why you're a liar. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here. There's only two possible explanations, either you are a liar, or a retard. Actually there's more than that, you could be a troll, or a paid GOP propaganda organ, but then both those more or less fall under the liar banner, and a little under the retard one as well.

So either approach the questions I've raised before, that you couldn't answer, such as how Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae can be mostly responsible for the economic crash when they don't lend to any end customers, or drop the issue, and stop dragging it into every single thread in the hopes that a lie repeated often enough, will be mistaken for the truth.

You have no case. If you disagree with me, then you're a liar and a coward.
