"The maritime unions, shipping companies and the International Maritime Organization all agree that ship's crews should not be armed," says Capt. George Quick, vice president of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots, based in Linthicum, Md. "It would only escalate the situation The [Somali] pirates are pretty well funded, and they'd just get bigger weapons."

I find this statement repulsive.

As if RPG's , an anti-armor weapons system , are not big enough already...

Next time pirates are scaling the ladder to board , the ship's 'fry cook' should
tip a pot of boiling grease into the faces of the pirates...

Avoids the carrying of nasty 'weapons' , and serves as a disincentive to continue
the boarding ops...

Hello,

I still feel angry. The pirates are too well funded, they say. We can't win the pirate arms race, they say.

Piracy is a business. Their funds come from Profits. Their Profits come from ransoms paid and/or assets captured.

In other words, the shipping and insurance companies are helpless to defend against the pirates because they are too busy funding them.

Never occurs to them, apparently, that every dollar they pay is an investment into their own ruin.

Nor that every dollar received by the Pirates inspires ten more men to the same carreer.

Can't afford to fight the pirates? Rediculous. Can't afford not to.

Indeed.

I still stand by my suggestion of issuing letters of marque with bonuses and bounties from the shippers themselves, since the insurers don't seem to care.

With piracy odds in their favor, ships shun armed guards

Washington - Less than half a percent of the ships that transit the Gulf of Aden are attacked by pirates, and of those attacks, less than half are successful.

About 33,000 ships sail through the Gulf of Aden each year, and there were just 122 attacks in 2008, according to Pentagon officials at Tuesday's congressional hearing. Of those attacks, only 42 were successful.
