I guess now they can all have a nice summer vacation when they shut down for 9 weeks as announced. When will it ever stop? We don't need Tax Tea parties, we need tanks.

I pretended to be GM so I got that last check, cashed right away, and now, my friends, I am writing this from the Cayman Islands where I paid peeps off not to let me be extradited.

I love the bailout!

And this isn't a left-right issue 'cause the left is whizzed off about the bailouts too!

I've written all of my politicians, signed a zillion petitions. Not against taxes per se, but definitely don't want to be forced to ante up for some dunderhead's greed! So, what do we do? Hold "FREE AMERICA" demonstrations July 4???

---------------------------------
They pit us like dogs against each other and rake it in. And I'll bet they laugh when they hear dupes like you defend the system that fucks you over and rewards them so nicely! But the one thing they'll stamp out in horror as if it were the spark of conflagration is any whiff of socialism. That should tell you something.

I'll sign on for your July 4th demonstration, if the economy hasn't already collapsed by then. This is your Obama Govt. doing this, led by tax-cheat Boy Blunder Geithner. They are carrying GM like they're stupid. Soon GM won't even have to pretend to make cars, they can just get their $ Billion a month from us.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from TAXATION. We're fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

I do believe you can buy an M-1 Abrams main battle tank, but good luck getting delivery. If memory serves,it's built by a division of Chrysler, and uses a transmission built by a division of GM. So without them, you're not going to be getting any more of those tanks. Or any Hum-Vees, up-armored or not.

So sorry. Bummer for the troops. I thought you supported them. Hope they'll be okay without transportation.

GOOD NEWS!! GM may stop building the Pontiac....Oh wait, that's bad news, thousands of lost jobs. Is this what happens when Barry takes over a car company? Oh well we're doing OK without the Oldsmobile.

Hello,

If there is a market for tanks, or all-terrain-vehicles, or armored cars, then someone will make them.

At the beginning of World War Two, our military production was a joke. At the end of the war, we were completing capital ships DAILY.

If our troops don't get what they need, it will be because of a lack of will to pay for it. Not a lack of capacity for building it.

Hello,

If you really like tanks, be heartened by this figure.

In 1940 we built six medium tanks (the mainstay of tank production.) Six the whole year.

In 1943 we built more than 20,000 tanks.

Production on Demand.

Although I do rather think that if GM and Chrysler shut down, there's going to be at least a period of transition where this production will NOT be taking place...

Hello,

Then be heartened to learn that we're slow getting them what they need anyway. Even with all the production capacity at our disposal.

And that's sad, but for reasons that do not involve car companies.

Anthony:

What's the delay between NEEDING military production capacity and actually GETTING it?

You should also note that an awful lot of that manufacturing capacity in WWII was in the factories of GM, Ford, and Chrysler, using a good many of their workers to do it.

I'm fine with tossing all that on the garbage heap of history if you are; just wondering if some of this stuff's been thought through.

GM borrowed $2B because it can't make the $1B payment due June 1st. At which point it must file bankruptcy.
All its previous bailout bucks went to build factories in Brazil and Commie China.

Chrysler is expected to file BK next week, whether or not Fiat buys Jeep.

It's all part of the NWO plan.

Hello Kwicko,

When all our native auto manufacturers were running at 100% before the economic crisis, we still weren't getting vehicles to troops when they were needed.

And in fact we're pretty bad at getting any equipment to troops on demand as needed.

It's not a production problem. It's a problem of will. It starts at the top.

Anthony, I understand perfectly where you're coming from - it's not that we COULDN'T get them better equipment and vehicles, but that we just WOULDN'T; we decided - as a nation, mind you, not as individuals* - that we'd take the cheapest route possible.

But I think you're somewhat missing or overlooking MY point - if you lose the factories, if you lose the organization that has the plans, the tooling, the assembly lines, and the workers who already know how to do the work and how to make those vehicles (because they've been making them for years)... If you lose that physical CAPABILITY, you're absolutely going to have some period of time, whether it be months or years, where you COULDN'T get those vehicles to those troops EVEN IF YOU WANTED TO, and no matter how desperately they might be needed.

* MY choice would be that if you send MY military men and women into harm's way, you give them not just the best equipment you've got, but the best equipment that exists! You're asking them to sacrifice - sometimes to give all - and we as a nation are too cheap and uncaring to even come close to reciprocating.

Hello,

There may in fact be a difficult time where any production is delayed by nearly a year. This of course depends on how we carve up the fallen companies. I suspect essential manufacturing branches will be fed to viable businesses, or simply nationalized.

But even if this were not the case...

If our president and our congress stood up with one voice and said, "We DEMAND that our troops get EVERYTHING they need!"

I'd be the happiest clam on Earth. And if we couldn't make that decree happen because of the short-sightedness of those self same people, I'd be doubly happy.

Because it would mean,

1) The important people woke up to a need.

and

2) They'd be appalled at their inability to meet that need, and be sure to never have that inability again.
