Zoë: Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?

Shepherd Book: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

Quote:

The Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life last week reported a finding that at first blush is stunning: the more often one attends religious services, the more likely one is to say that the use of torture against suspected terrorists is at least sometimes justified. And white evangelical Protestants are the most likely subgroup to offer at least some support for torture, while those who are not affiliated with a religious denomination are the least likely.

Or could be just that they love sitting idly by and watching 1000's die as long as they're not "christians". These folks who love torture are so intent on fighting "pure evil" that they're fully willing to become pure evil to try to "win" that fight, never seeing the futility of their methods...

That quote from Book is supposed to be ironic, you know. <_<

...And technically wasn't he against torture? He kind of took up arms to stop it.

Anyway. No one's evil who wasn't made evil.

What we're looking at is the result of extreme nationalism on the side of the United States and several Middle Eastern Nations. Calling each other evil is a falsehood, and inhibits any effort to actually solve the problems between us.

As such, since most of the people we're torturing aren't evil, they're just angry and misdirected enough to want to set off explosives everywhere, can't really condone the torture. It's barbaric and we hold ourselves (or should) to higher standards. And less dubious moral justifications than simply "they're evil!"

I always thought it was torture when my Mom forced me to go to church as a small child. Religious folk just have a better understanding of what torture is, because they go through psychological torture every Sunday.

I suppose there's nothing 'idle' about 1000's of non-x-tians dying. After all, the x-tians went to great efforts to make it happen.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Can Never be justified is the only important category. People who are willing to justify it at all will always find reasons to do so.

High Church Attendance - 25%
Intermittent Church Attendance - 23%
Low or No Church Attendance - 26%

A spread of 3 percentage points, with an unknown margin of error in the survey.

And apparently, Mainline Protestants are the reported most against torture, at 31%

And what conclusions can we draw from this about a propensity for torture and religious beliefs?

Can we conclude that church attendance has an effect on torture willingness? Can we conclude that Mainline Protestants are more humane than atheists?

I don't think we can conclude anything.

I didn't see a category for atheists. I see one for "seldom or never attend church services", but that doesn't tell me anything about whether or not they BELIEVE in any god(s), just that they're not keen on going to church.

Hello,

I assumed that atheists never go to Church, though I concede I may be mistaken.

And yes, the survey neglects to ask people whether they believe in God, which is a very different thing from visiting a building on Sundays.

Atheist go to church when their friends get married in churches.

They HAVE attended church in the past, most likely, and that's why they stopped going.

Least that's my story.

It means any move you make forfeits your king, and ends the game. You still CAN make a move, but it's pointless to do so. Hence my choice of those words aimed at Rappy. It was an analogy to his running out of moves, AND a play on his checklist ploy, both at the same time.

Anthony,

I tend to assume that atheists never go to church, too. But that's not quite the same as assuming that those who never or seldom go to church are atheists, is it?
