You don't HAVE to agree with me, but as long as this topic keeps popping up, I'm going to comment on it. It is a personal moral issue for me as well as an "American" issue. It's not Republican or Democrat, or really even Liberal or Conservative. It's about civilized and lawful behavior versus barbarism and sadism.

You kill a person by running over them with your car.

Did you INTEND to do them harm? Or did you simply not see them, and they died as a result anyway.

Murder one isn't "minutia", my friend. Intent plays a major role in the letter of the law. And that's what we're dealing with here, are we not ? Civilization vs barbarism ?

Wait - how does this stack up with your previous stance - it's not torture if there's no risk of death ? B/c otherwise , it's just hazing and hijinks.

Rappy, your interpretation of the law is 150% wrong. Legal experts- not you or me, mind you- have repeatedly commented on how ... er... tortured the logic is in the relevant memos.

And AFA as "accident" is concerned... If as a driver you've contributed in any way to the "accident" then you will likely be charged with vehicular manslaughter. And if you've had several accidents to your record (particularly if you've been DUI) they will lock you up and throw away the key.

For god's sake rue, that's expecting rappy to be logical!

Not at all friend. It IS the intent I find as disturbing as the actions. We can never become barbarians to defeat barbarians, and we don't need to. We have a right to self-defense, but not to initiate offense. The Brits, Russians, and Americans liberated over 2,000 Nazi concentration and death camps. What they found there was beyond description. Yet the Allies conducted their business with the SS guards and Commanders without subjecting them to the things we've done. The worst of the lot were made to assist in the burying of the piles of dead bodies, but eventually they were tried for their crimes. They were not brutalized. Eisenhower and the Nuremburg judges went out of their way to establish the manner in which prisoners are treated. Whoever dreampt this shit up, Cheney or Rumsfeld, they imposed their own low moral values, and they had no right to do so.

I find myself in strange company on this issue today, and it's a bit weird. I am certainly not the only traditionalist/conservative who feels this way. These actions violate every fiber of my Conservatism.

Right you are. And it's because, as you said, it's not a conservative or liberal issue - it's a HUMAN issue, and a MORAL issue. What we do even to the worst of the worst says more about us than it does about them.

I gotsta say that you put the whole thing together with a couple of very pithy and powerful sentences. I don't know why so many out there cannot understand these most sacred core principles of who and what we are supposed to be as a nation.

Jongs, in the spirit of TRUE bipartisanship, can we engrave that rant on a brass plaque and send it to the CURRENT resident of 1600 Pennsylvania? If nothing else, just as a damn REMINDER of who we are, who he works for, and what we do and DON'T DO in this America.

The funniest part about them writing it all down? That was the exact thing that made prosecuting the Nazi war criminals so damned easy; they were so dead-set on the record-keeping and efficiency that they wrote EVERYTHING down. I'd have hoped that if nothing else, modern-day despots and would-be tyrants would have figured out NOT TO LEAVE SO MANY DAMNED NOTES LYING AROUND!!!
