And she almost makes Palin look smart.

Almost.

What makes you sad, Anthony? That she's so woefully misinformed/uninformed? On the bright side (I guess), she IS trying to partake in her government...

I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Like woman, I am a mystery.

She sounds like one of those people who would have voted for Obama because he's cuter than McCain.

Hello,

Yes, it makes me sad that she seems to be utterly ignorant.

But more than that, it makes me sad that she is incapable of forming complete and coherent trains of thought.

In fact, I can't even become excited about this person taking an active part in politics by speaking at this event. It's like a chef thoughtfully seasoning a farmer's field with salt so that the food will taste better.

I also fear that this is what the establishment thinks of us. All of us. That very little in the end separates us from this person.

And I fear that, by and large, the judgment might be true. I don't have access to a large enough sampling to assure me that she does not represent the 'average person.'

So, front back and sideways, I find myself sad.

It makes me sad as well. Here we have someone who can be mocked from both sides of the aisle. Were it not for the thread title that is.

Ah yes, the intentional end result of our public "education" systems.

I feel sorry for her, to be honest - it's an all too common result, and one that I put a great deal of effort into bettering at every possible chance.

I mean, it's hard to fault someone who is not only woefully uneducated, but does not in any way realize this fact, and thus makes no effort to remedy it - and most folks approach to suggesting it comes across as hostile, belittling or insulting and as such causes them to reject the concept.

Reminds me of this poor girl outside Dept of Motor Vehicles way back when who was part of a voter registration drive - I still feel bad about that... pointed out to her that the popular vote is tallied only as a matter of record and then discarded, which in combination with how the electors are selected, makes my vote worth exactly... what ?

Poor kid looked like she'd been hit with a hammer, and just wandered off looking dazed as I went on my merry, didn't bother me so much then, as I was younger and nastier - but it does now, knowing how cruel that was.

She will probably end up as a US Congresswoman, with the rest of the illiterate retards who never read the legislation they vote for while missing 75% of rollcalls.

I think it's more about speech patterns than iq, and her speech patterns are learned speech patterns, California Valley Speak:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valspeak

so I believe she's affecting a manner to belong to a social group more than it being a reflection of her true iq. If she moved away from her current social group she would no doubt adopt a new style.
This is an extreme example but you can go just about anywhere in the US and find speech patterns that serve similar purposes - used as a smoke screen to hide behind, as well as lowering the expectations of anyone listening. When I travel my state the farther away from the city I get the more self-deprecating people's speech seems to get.

It reminds me of "traditional southern" style of speech in how it seems *imho* so over calculated to not offend, and so over affected, it's to the point that you constantly have to be wondering who you're really talking to. NYC is the other end of the spectrum :)

There's that Pizmo, save that the lady in question doesn't really understand the concepts she's trying to discuss.

But I DO take your meaning, my sister has been hiding her intellect behind the east-coast version of valleyspeak (and she's got at least two medical degrees, mind you!) for 20 years and more, ever since she found out that the intelligence was "uncool" courtesy of the crap she watched her brother have to take over it.

As for my thuggish retro-20's gangsterese, I have little excuse, having initially done that to cover a slight speech impediment, and it's simply become habit, is all.

She's all good intentions and no public speaking experience and lots of jangled nerves maybe.

You hit on one of the most dangerous and frustrating parts: "... ever since she found out that the intelligence was "uncool"..."

That seems so ingrained in so many people - you can interchange "caring" with "intelligence" too, neither one is cool. It can even be taken to a point of pride sometimes. Hey, speaking of Palin... her awe shucks you-don't-havta-speak-smart-to-be-the-VP-dontcha-know plain speak was calculated to appeal to the same people. What a role model we missed.

Yeah, was a big problem both the schools I wound up kicked out of, and the second chance schools - honor roll was the next best thing to a death sentence.

I had an edge though, I mighta been a geek, but I was a psychotic geek, with enough razor edged steel concealed on my person to make you have a VERY bad day, even if you did somehow manage to pound me unconscious, which was the only way to stop me once you'd started somethin.

It's kinda funny though how people aspire to qualities they do not have and wish they did - for all my violent nature, most of my role model idols are actually pacifists, Nausicaa, Yuna, Captain Tylor, Princess Pacifica, although the latter two ARE complete slackers like me.

So was Dubya's folksiness.

And for the record, I've ALWAYS thought smart was cool.
