Blood everywhere as granny's head slams asphalt...

Quote:

Now, video of the incident has created new problems for the local police department as citizens from around the country question the force used.

The cell phone video ended up on YouTube—and the local police department said it has changed the way they work, NBC 4‘s Mike Bowersock reported.

Virginia Dotson was wandering the Walmart parking lot at 3657 E. Main St. the evening of Aug. 1 with a steak knife. She was telling strangers she would cut them and already had cut herself.

Whitehall officers were called to the scene, but some witnesses said officers used too much force in subduing the woman.

Dotson’s daughter said Dotson found a steak knife in the vehicle, cut herself out of her seat belt and took the knife with her while searching for her daughter.

Dotson, who is believed to be 84 years old, was treated and released from Mount Carmel Medical Center for the head injuries she received when she was taken to the ground.

All seemed said and done with the incident until the video hit YouTube.

Now, Whitehall police are receiving phone calls from around the nation—even though there was little outrage in Central Ohio when the incident occurred.

“We’ve had people from Hollywood calling. We’ve had people from St. Louis, Houston, New York,“ said Whitehall Police Chief Richard Zitzke.

Zitzke estimates the department has received between 100 and 150 calls, some which tied up the phone line for an hour.

“We’ve had one or two people that just called and yelled and hung up the phone. We’ve had actually some death threats towards the officer,“ he said.

Granny had Alzheimers, which is why Uncle Scam injects granny with mercury and sprays aluminum in chemtrails. Flu vaccines increase Alzheimers 300%.

Well, if granny can blame it on the chemtrails, I'm sure the cop can claim the same defense, right?

Yes, everybody gets fried, including the police state death squads.

The elite get the chelation antidote, and cars & houses with HEPA filters on their 100,000 acre ranches.

Hello,

I have seen the video (gruesome) and the news report about the video. An old lady was brandishing a knife and threatening to cut folks.

Your options are to shoot her with a gun, to shoot her with a taser, or to physically restrain her with such a brisk motion that she can't cut you. The officer chose door number three, and granny endured a bloody head injury from her impact with the asphalt.

We know from Inara how little effort it takes to cut someone.

The officer was in a lose, lose, lose scenario. There was no way to deal with knife-brandishing granny without looking like an ass.

Now you're thinking like a cop , Anthony...

You completely forgot the best option--Talking granny down...

Granny has a natural right to self-defense , even if that means she carries a knife...If granny felt threatened or even
' paranoid ', she may have had sufficient and just cause for feeling that way...

Cops are not really adequately trained in de-escalation , or crisis and conflict-resolution scenarios that do not involve coercion or physical force , or whatever other preferred method of violence...

Folk should know , on that basis , the phrase
' peace officer ' is an oxymoron...

And that it's ' okay ' for a ' Law Enforcement ' officer to violently assault someone , so long as it's for ' the public good ' .

Hello,

Talking someone down is just fine when they aren't mobile, brandishing a weapon, and threatening to use it. I'm sorry to say, but that crosses my line of tea and buscuits and a chat at noon.

De-escalation is what happens before someone takes out a weapon and threatens to use it on you.

The officer took down granny, disarmed her, and-

Punched her? No.

Beat her with a nightstick? No.

Sprayed her with mace? No.

Tased her? No.

Just took her down and disarmed her, and called for the meatwagon. No special malice or abuse of authority present. The officer did exactly what an officer ought to do. The only reason it looks ugly is because it was granny.

--And , BUSTED HER HEAD WIDE OPEN !

The reason it looks ugly is because it was stupid , acting under the color of authority...

How fast , and how mobile , do you suppose granny to be ?

How much reach do you suppose granny to have ?

All it would have taken , given 2-3 cops available , is attempting a de-escalation while backing granny away from Folk that she could've hurt...Cops typically wear bullet-proof vests , ya know ? Kevlar is pretty effective at stopping blades , right ?

A little mace to her eyes would've done a lot less harm than busting her head wide open , which is a potentially lethal injury...

Too often , police use weapons ahead of brains , and that is what happened in this case...

If folk can be trusted to openly carry firearms , which is , as you pointed out , one of the risks of living in a 'free' country , then who's afraid of an elderly lady toting a knife ?

Cowardly cops , that's who...

I have yet to see any evidence that this cop is a "dyke" - not that it should matter one whit whether she is or isn't gay. I'm sure no one here would think any less of PirateNews if I constantly referred to him as "Faggot PirateNews". They might think less of ME for it, though, which would be quite understandable and expected.

I hate to say it, but O2B actually has quite a good point here.

Although, according to reports, the old bird WAS threatening to cut people, which does indeed escalate the situation a bit.

While open-carry may be lawful in some areas, I'll bet things change a mite when someone is actually brandishing (not carrying in a holster, but rather in their hand, in a threatening manner) and threatening to shoot people.

The cop could have de-escalated in a better manner, I agree - but it could have also ended worse. Same situation happened here in Austin a few years back - a "disturbed" woman brandishing a knife and threatening to cut people. Cop de-escalated her with one shot to the head, and she never bothered anyone again. He was investigated, and while they agreed it might have been avoided, the department (and a grand jury) DID rule it a justifiable kill.

That's more than decent , you saying so...

The presumption should be , if an old lady is saying she'll cut someone , she might be crazy...Or , she might be tired of being hurt or abused , or being disadvantaged by someone stronger...

Not that she particularly needs her head busted open for that...

Shows a lack of empathy and understanding on the part of the cops , is what...

I thought that was one of the job requirements for BEING a cop - lack of empathy and understanding!

(And yes, BDN, this is a joke. You may have heard of it. Humor. It's a human concept. You might not get it.)

Hello,

If anyone is brandishing a weapon and threatening to use it, the assumption should be that they're going to use it.

I believe in de-escalation in cases where no one is threatening you with a weapon. Cases where you have an unruly individual being belligerent. That same individual draws a weapon and threatens to use it, you have to take them at their word.

If you were watching a video about a no-empathy thug, you'd have seen them breaking limbs, punching, kicking, tasing with glee, or all manner of other things.

What you watched was a cop saying, "What's the fastest and surest way of ending this?" And then doing it, stopping all aggression once the threat was neutralized. You can muse about what might have happened if the cop had tried to de-escalate someone who was disconnected from reality and brandishing a knife.

Let me tell you what did happen - The woman was disarmed, and she was released from medical care with no serious injury. That's a win, folks. You've forgotten what brutality really looks like. Granny doesn't walk away from THAT. I'm glad we had this cop, and not one of the bad ones with something to prove.

Amen, hallelujah, peanut butter.

For the record, you can and should de-escalate even when a weapon has been deployed - a knife isn't a ranged weapon, in order to attack you, either they have to come AT you, or you have to come AT them, which is an excessively aggressive response in the situation.

I fault the officers training - in fact that's every bit as much a cause as their bad attitude and institutional corruption - cause what does a poorly trained cop DO when he runs out of options ?

Well, this - that's what.
