You don't understand what you read, Admiral--you exploit it. You gather up some prejudicial b.s. inferred from my post and smugly warn me not to underestimate you. Now that is funny. Expecting simple reading comprehension is overestimating you.

So, you dismiss your own libelous remarks about the President, defend them not at all, expecting me to do the same, and proceed to your first, however vaguely, substantive generalizations about actual policy.

Obama strikes me as the sort of politician who feels that money and government can solve all problems.

I think that they just cause new ones.

You think that one up all by yourself? You want a cookie?

It doesn't work like that. You don't come in here being a jackass, polluting the forum with your dad's hand-me-down talking points, then expect people to take you seriously when you realize that your b.s. doesn't fly.

HKCavalier

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Your towering intellect is awesome .
I bow to your superiority .

What's wrong HK, someone steal your cookie?
How is offering a different view point being a jackass?
And if this same Poster was railing on about the big bad Bush, would your response have been different? You might want to think long and hard about that one before you post your response though, IMHO.

Is there a "second-most important job in the world" that you get promoted from? How'd that work out for Ford? How'd it work out for HW Bush? Or Gore, for that matter?

I mean, will it really make you feel better if I say, "Oh, don't worry - he'll do better his second term, because he'll have experience." Of course, by your own words, you WOULD vote for him for a second term, right? After all, at that point he WILL be the most experienced candidate running for the office...

Like any vocation , there is a chain from start to finish .

A Private gets experience and is promoted to Corporal . A Corporal does likewise and is made a Sergeant .

Same goes for the Officer corps .
Same goes for any vocation .

Mr Obama jumped from junior Senator to the most powerful office in the world .

He's smart , charismatic and orates well .

He's still inexperienced .

I do not envy his task .

But am I a Conservative ?
Up here in Canuckistan I am , but am I by your metre ?

Here's my politics in a nutshell

I'm pro gay marriage
I'm for ending the insanity that is the War on Drugs
I'm pro socialised medicine ( but I also want options . Private options , so that's an idealogical nightmare )
I'm pro separation of Church and State
I'm pro state funded secondary education ( with a stipulation that said beneficiary serves the state - not unlike the Armed Forces )
I'm pro welfare but only as a hand up and not a hand out .
I'm pro Unemployment Insurance but with severe limitations .
I'm "pro" abortion ( as in choice - I have no right to dictate to a woman what she does with her body , however , said woman should not use my tax dollars to pay for serial abortions . Also , I limit my support to the first trimester and medical necessities )

Conservative ?

Now

I am also for the Death Penalty ( Paul Bernardo - why is he availing himself to my air ? )
Very pro military .
( military family - we know what we do and we know why . Not pro war , just pro *winning* the damn war . Not going to fight it through to the end ? Don't go in the first place )
I'm against affirmative action when it is detrimental to the effectiveness of whatever formation it's being applied to ( like firefighters - no lowering aptitude or physical prowess )
I'm for lower taxes from top to bottom .
I'm for less government
I'm against the retarded gun laws my country has imposed on me ( while understanding that a certain amount of regulation is indeed prudent )
I'm pro immigration but anyone coming here has to leave their shit at home . I'm Canadian and I expect new Canadians to respect our culture and laws . Don't like it ? Go back .
I'm against repeat offenders being kicked to the street to commit new crimes . Serve your time .
I'm against the Young Offenders Act ( most people know wrong from right , it's the system that enables these hooligans )
I'm dubious of anthropological climate change and yet am pro conservation and recognise the benefits of not fouling our air , water and soil .
I'm pro capitalism ( small and large with usually obvious mea culpas )
I'm also pro seal hunt ( Nova Scotian - it's our culture )

I'm also pro double spacing as it makes reading easier .

There's more , but that about sums it up .

So , am I liberal or conservative ?

( on the OB I've labeled myself as either liberally conservative or conservatively liberal , which draws charges of fence sitting )

I say I'm simply me .

I expect you'll agree with me sometimes and I know you will disagree other times .

I also expect snark and snide ( at large ) and I will usually reciprocate )

Don't despair, Admiral - neither Reagan nor Goldwater could get elected as conservatives today; both would be seen as FAR too liberal for the evangelicals who've taken over the conservative movement here in the U.S.

Oh, and as a side order of snark:

Canada has culture?

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

GO Digby!! (I know, you hate me; maybe someday that will change...meanwhile I will give you the respect I've always suspected you deserved, so THERE!)

I KNEW we had a lot in common. Aside from the seal hunt (sorry, animal-rights activist, there are a few of us over here) and that I'm still sitting on the fence about the death penalty, and given your caveats, damn, I can't find a thing on which I disagree with you! That's amazing.

Yes, I AM even pro-military, with your caveat--insofar as too many damned politicians want to start one for any reason, then not finish. I love the idea about secondary education. Yes, I agree with you about affirmative action (nobody over there ever ASKED if I thought the firefighter thing was RIGHT, y'know), and I don't know what the Young Offenders Act is (but I can guess, and we might agree there, too). I'm even on the fence about global warming (nobody asked THAT either, just spouted hate-filled rhetoric about Gore's church).

I'm gonna have to save that to remind myself who you are, 'cuz I have no doubt the snarks will ensue. I won't even mind 'em...over here, you're not in a gang; everyone can hold their own.

I say again: Go Digby!

I think, Frem thinks, that a prediction is to say that something that has happened before would continue to happen. You think torture only happened under the past administration? You think the "alphabet agencies" only did bad stuff during the past 8 years? You think the government did not surveil the public before Bush?
And I don't think Frem has a better track record around here regarding making predictions. I have made only one to my knowledge and I was right. I'd say 100% is pretty good, no?

Comprehension really isn't your strong suit, is it? You'll note that I asked him if he "WOULD" vote for Obama (as in, WOULD you vote for him if you could?), not if he "WILL" vote for him. Since he's a Canadian, he obviously can't vote for our President. But it's nice of him to tell us who we should and shouldn't have for our leader. I think I'll take up telling Canadians what kind of health care they should have; I'm sure they'll appreciate that. Their current system is making us look bad. Clearly they'll have to change theirs.

This wasn't about silliness. Never was. And, I noticed, that you never DID answer Frem's list of predictions... But you still haven't gotten it. Hell, you can't even admit when things are goin' seriously wrong AT THE MOMENT.
Time to remove your blinders, BDN. Wake up an' smell the coffee.

You made the same mistake in the other thread about FDLS... www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=18&t=39585 constantly misunderstanding me due to your simple FAILURE TO READ ACCURATELY, missing all of the "ifs" and "seems to be" which I had included in my posts to indicate that I had simply not made up my mind either way on the topic. Now, I don't claim to be as smart as Kwicko or as world-wise as Frem, as fact-rich as Rue or as empathetic as HK, but everyone knows that any of them can think circles around you, and it would suit your purposes NOT to try making them look stupid over YOUR mistakes, because it makes you even more irrelevant than you already are. So a word to the wise (if you can deal with it): READ CAREFULLY AND RESPOND DIRECTLY. You'll get into far less trouble that way, and you'll represent your viewpoint a whole lot more effectively. What attempt at re-direction. You seem to be confusing two seperate discussions. One I'm having with you about silly attacks on the President and one I'm having with KwickFrem about his predicting ability

That's a little clearer, I guess. I thought Frem was boasting about how he could see the fascist practices of the Bush administration before they happened. You know, predictions like after Iraq, Iran would be next and so on. I did not realize he was proud of the fact that he puzzled out once a government grabs more power they will not give it up. Frem might as well crow about how he predicted that at the end of the day, the sun sets.

BDN: Your responses to me in this thread have been wildly off-point, as have your responses to me in the other thread. I responded to the prediction discussion. You, poor thing, were still back at the starting line. Meanwhile I listed a set of MY predictions, in which- yes indeed- I had predicted the whole fascist thing. And furthermore, I predict again that the more that comes out about the Bush admin the worse and worse it will look.

Care to respond to that? Do you think that will come true, or not? A yes/no answer is sufficient, and a lot clearer than weasel-wording on your part

I further made the point that even as Bush was busy trampling the Constitution, lying to Congress, spying on US citizens, and hemorrhaging money you didn't object to it.. And if you did, do you care to point out where? Because, really, I can't think of a single instance, but I would be happy to be proven wrong. Just dig up ONE instance where you've criticized the Bush admin for any one of it's unmistakable errors, or made ANY sort of prediction about where his policies would lead.

BTW, an "if-then" statement is not an assumption. I shouldn't have to tell you that.

That's the tricky thing about communicating on an internet forum. Sometimes things can get misconstrued as we are missing many of the nuances that help make communication more effective in real life.

Admiral, should you ever return, you can't possibly be "quaint" as something would have to be outdated to be quaint, and you are a n00b.

No offense, I would have to care to give offense, I would nuke such threads if they didn't perform such a wonderful function and benefit society by sucking in all the BS that might get posted elsewhere where people were trying to have a civilized conversation, even if they do push people to the point where (reference omitted here.)

O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves in some necroposted threads of earlier this year...
