So they convicted this bozo, fair and square, trial by jury and all that, and sentence him to life in prison, and then let him out because he's got terminal cancer, and only 30 or maybe 60 or maybe 90 days to live? And he goes home to Libya and gets a hero's welcome, and Kadaffi's kid claims he was a political hostage all this time.

Even I can't like the British government very much on this one. They turned their back on justice and the rule of law, as well as the feelings of the victims and America and the British people, and they didn't even get insist that it be handled discreetly. And they didn't get anything out of it? Stupid I can believe, but THAT stupid?

Shoulda let him die in his cell, then cremated him and poured his ashes over Lockerbie.

I'd let him go free, too. After I had him fried up in bacon grease and important bits of him fed to the hogs. Yeah, he could go home to die then. I'm totally okay with that.

Or better yet, you use the same approach we use on nesting insect infestations...you know, fill him up with poisons that he can take back to the hive. Oh yeah. That'd work good too.

I am an angry, sick, violent-minded individual; I already know. I'm all about the poetic justice though...and you gotta admit, that would be poetic.

Got more options in mind, but they're really not the kind of thing I want to be broadcasting to the world. Don't want to give anybody any ideas they don't need to be having.

I am laughing my ass off, though...

or they turned their back on justice when they convicted him...

as it turns out there was evidence not presented, alternate theories of the crime silenced, and a great deal of political manipulation behind the scenes to get a quick verdict with minimum investigation.

I believe it is Scottish policy to release terminal prisoners. Misguided perhaps but the precedent has been set.

Exactly.SCOTTISH POLICY.nothing to do with British central government, who incidentally do not approve. So please divert your anger away from Britain,or specifically England, and think what should have been if devolution hadn't happened.

That would be a waste of bacon grease imho...

Actually, my first reaction was the same as yours - ok less bloody, but otherwise pretty close.

Then, I started thinking about other options.

So you have this single Libyan in your prison and he's about to die. First thought is: that's good, justice will finally be served.

And then you think about what happens after that. The simple fact occurs to you that his death will forever be tied to Scotland. You think this may not be well rec'd in Lybia, or in any of the anti-western parts of the middle east for that matter... an area that has a rep for not forgetting and being a bit vengeful.

Hold on a minute. You could always send him home, take him off your books as it were, and weather the international criticism (which I don't think they foresaw as being so enduring... but then isn't it just more obvious public/political posturing?). International condemnation would not likely consist of any bombs and it would eventually pass - easy. Meanwhile, the Libyans would have their countryman back and their vengeance - if any - would likely dissipate.

Judging by his welcome, if that was their concern, I'd say they played it pretty well - Libyans were clearly very emotionally attached to the outcome.
