Stephen Frears: I'd watch Tony Blair being executed 'with great pleasure'

Stephen Frears, the director of the Oscar-winning film The Queen, has said that he would watch "with great pleasure" if Tony Blair were publicly executed.

Frears also directed The Deal, which centred on the 1994 Labour leadership pact between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

He said that the Prime Minister could regain the public's affection if he said that Mr Blair should be killed.

"If Gordon Brown suggested Tony Blair be publicly executed, he would be popular in Britain overnight," Frears told a German entertainment website.

Asked "Would you go and watch?", Frears replied: "With great pleasure. But closed eyes."

In another interview during the same promotional tour, he added: "All the people in Britain wish for at the moment is Tony Blair's head. Nothing else matters.

"If Gordon Brown would give them Blair's head, he could remain as Prime Minister: just chop it off and put it on a spike. Like in old times."

The director said that the Labour government was a "catastrophe". However, he said that Mr Brown was a "tragic hero".

"Tony Blair wasn’t that, he was simply dreadful," he said.

Peter Morgan, the writer of both The Queen and The Deal, is currently filming The Special Relationship, which examines Mr Blair's dealings with Bill Clinton and George W Bush, the former US presidents.

However, Frears is not involved in the third part of Morgan's trilogy about the Blair era.

"The truth is I can't bear him any more," Frears said. "Two movies about him, that should be enough."

The film is being directed by Richard Loncraine, whose work includes The Gathering Storm, the 2002 television film about Winston Churchill.

My opinion: Sick bastard. I wouldn't even wish to see Dumbya's head on a stick, and I've got reason, it being my country he screwed up.

To say things like that shows exactly what kind of person Frears is; to post it says more about you than it could possibly say about Blair.

Sad there are both of you running around out there; it's embarrassing to the rest of humanity.

Will humanity pull a Miranda and lay down and die?

Or will it arrest, put on trial, find guilty then execute the psychopathic traitors who are our dictators? Just like USA did to Saddam Hussein (or his double), by hanging him and his family until their heads fall off.

This is a war to the death.

I happen to agree with a lot of that. I'm against the death penalty on all levels. I never wanted Bush dead and I do seriously fear that Obama isn't going to be as lucky as to only have a pair of shoes thrown at him during a speech someday.

I do however think putting guys like Blair behind bars for the rest of their lives is a very worthwhile expenditure of taxpayer dollars. When we free up the prisons by letting all the minor pot dealers and users out for things that are non-violent and shouldn't be illegal in the first place, housing the likes of the Bushes, the Clintons, Obama, the Roves, Darth Cheney, the corporate CEOs who destroyed our nation with eyes wide open, the regulators who destroyed our nation with eyes wide shut, 90% of congress who destroyed America with varying degrees of lucidity, and cops like Wesley Cheeks Jr. and every other one who's ever tazered, brutalized or murdered the innocent..... well, that would just be a drop in the bucket compared to how much we waste on excessive law enforcement and housing and feeding millions who don't belong behind bars.

Life in prison is much worse than death.

I think it would be a great expenditure of taxpayer dollars. Hell... we could make a zoo out of it and it would pay for itself tenfold. Maybe we'd even be able to cover the entire costs of running the remaining prisons with the money that would come rolling in.

Imagine the resurgence of interest in it every time one of these people we all know and love are the newest attraction.

Ah.... Isn't imagination great!!?

The idea just isn't complete without a Thunderdome, Jack.

Live on pay per view, of course.

Great way to offset expenses, and let these assholes take it out on each OTHER instead of throwing us peons at each other to kill, maim, and die for goals that benefit us not at all.

I got no problem with killin em, I don't even pretend otherwise, but it'd be so MUCH more satisfying for us peons to force THEM to kill each other for our entertainment, in a wonderfully vengeful bit of irony.

I already put Blair and Putin in the Thunderdome, but really, I'm against killing intelligent people. I think we should capture both of them and have them spill the beans about these conspiracies because they certainly know a lot more about them than we do.
