Wow! Even CBS! CBS has some of the top watched shows this quarter- 50% higher viewership than NBC last night alone. If CBS is in trouble I have a hunch the other broadcast companies might be in a similar boat soon.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Yikes. Okay, Macy's I knew about, and that's no surprise at all.

Hertz is worrisome, because Penske is trying to buy Saturn. If Hertz is in trouble, that means ol' Rodg might not have the cashy money to get Saturn, which would be pretty disastrous for that brand.

Goodyear is only poised to get worse. It's not bad enough that the Japanese brands have been undercutting them, but now the Koreans are really making strides (Kumho and Hankook, among others), and the Chinese are coming. There's a very good chance that your next set of tires - especially if you buy tires at Pep Boys or Walmart or Sears, for example - are coming from China. Goodyear's screwed, but they did it to themselves. They aren't offering anywhere near the performance OR reliability of other tire manufacturers any more, but they're still charging quite a premium for their name.

AMD: Go figure. They're dead, they just haven't realized it yet. They're the Gateway Computer of chipmakers. Heck, maybe they can sell chips to Gateway. That should keep 'em afloat for another week or so. (And I'm not just saying that because they're local to me)

That's my take on a few of the ones listed. Your mileage may vary.

DREAMTROVE

After many years in the field I can say that almost all financial news predictions are bogus.

That said, this:

1. Hertz

Maybe.

2. Textron

Probably, airline industry is being killed like the railroads.

3. Sprint Nextel

Nah, it might split though. Sprint is a blue chip. It's hard for them to fail, look at detroit, utter destruction didn't stop GM.

4. Macy's

Macy's has been on the edge of bankruptcy all my life. I suspect they have friends somewhere.

5. Mylan

Probably

6. Goodyear

Fallout from the auto disaster. It won't fail I suspect, but someone might buy it, like some Japanese company.

7. CBS

Unlikely, they are a keystone in the Skull and Bones empire, which means $4 trillion in assets behind that dead whale.

8. Advanced Micro Devices

AMD is another one on the edge of bankruptcy, but it never fails. They're problem is that they keep pushing the edge of performance without designing good old standbys that just rake in cash, like the ipod. But AMD is going to be hard to sink, since it's backed by the prince of Dubai, who is not short on cash.

9. Las Vegas Sands

The whole city is going under.

10. Interpublic Group

I have no idea who these guys are.
